  • Hey y'all! So after a weeklong hiatus due to a health scare, we are back on track with our NEWEST reaction to Sabaton's "No Bullets Fly". And WOWZA what a crazy song! The story behind it is even MORE crazy than the song itself. To say we got emotional... Is an understatement.

Sabaton is a Swedish heavy metal band known for their powerful storytelling, focusing on historical events, war heroes, and battles. Formed in 1999, the band’s unique style blends metal with lyrical themes of bravery, sacrifice, and camaraderie. Their music often serves as both entertainment and education, shining a spotlight on lesser-known moments in military history. Sabaton's energy and commitment to historical accuracy have earned them a dedicated global fanbase, and their concerts are known for being immersive, theatrical experiences.
"No Bullets Fly" is one of Sabaton’s standout songs, telling the extraordinary true story of a chivalrous act during World War II. The song is based on the encounter between Franz Stigler, a German fighter pilot, and Charlie Brown, the pilot of a severely damaged American B-17 bomber. Instead of shooting the defenseless bomber out of the sky, Stigler chose to escort it to safety, sparing the lives of Brown and his crew. "No Bullets Fly" captures the humanity and moral dilemmas that emerge even in the horrors of war, with Sabaton’s soaring melodies adding emotional weight to this remarkable tale of mercy and honor.

I know how you feel. I never knew this story existed until I watched their video and the tears just would not stop. It took a while to stop crying.
There's a book about them, too, called A Higher Call. You even get photos and a few of their letters included.

I think, after all, the best about Sabaton songs is exactly that: they don't take sides. They just tell historical stories from neutral grounds.

    • @The-Plaguefellow
      @The-Plaguefellow 3 месяца назад

Sabaton do have exceptions to not taking sides: mainly against true-blue N*zis (those who fully-believe in such an ideology, not those who fell victim to propaganda, desperation, and/or simple patriotism), and terrorists.
Other than that, if they do "take a side", it's them telling from a perspective rather than absolutely, taking a side.

On the day of Charlie's passing, I would imagine that the harrowing shreik of a BF-109 could be heard in the distance. Franz had come to bring his brother home, one last time.
    Horrido.

Try Sabaton's story song Night Witches. Another amazing WW II story. But be sure to get the long version with the story. Sabaton's drummer is married to Floor Janson from Nightwish.

Awesome song, awesome story. You can not love the heroic acts of Franz Stigler. Showing humanity in a very dangerous situation.
Something that Sabaton shows the world. Brilliant!

Adam Makos and his co-author Larry Alexander have written down the story of the two pilots in a book. "A Higher Call" tells the story of Charlie and Franz, of their beginnings as pilots, their careers, the fateful meeting on that December 20th, the further course of their lives and of Charlie's search for the pilot who escorted them back then.
I can only highly recommend it.
    Many greetings from Germany

I think, with a war like WWII, you get both extremes of humanity. On one hand, you get people like Franz, Leslie "Bull" Allen, or Desmond Doss, but on the other, you get things like Holocaust or Unit 731

Sabaton is education done right. No one knows about a lot of what they write and sing about and we're all better for it to have that nugger of history in our memory so those sung about are never forgotten.

i always like the part where the guns were pointed at stigler and he just looks at them with a look of "are you fucking kidding me dude?". in all seriousness though, this one often gets to me a bit too. my one grandpa was a telegrapher while the other worked for the dutch underground. i never got to meet either of them sadly as they passed before i was born. i heard though that the one who was part of the DU would never speak of his experiences, even if he was asked. it really fucked him up.

I once read the "Ye Old Pup"s Crew and their Children and Grandchildren made like an annual Grillparty with Franz Stiegler as a honored Guest.
I think that overrules the Honor of a Medal from a Country that no longer exists by far.
But you must also think of this: A wearer of the Knights Cross can only be ordered by Hitler to go on Combat Missions.
By not shooting down this Bomber (what have been a murder an not a fight) he decreased his Chance of surviving the War by an hilarious percentage
