  • I’ve never really been into old Ford’s. However, after buying this Granada for a film shoot, I couldn’t help but fall for it. As did my wife, Abi.
    Here’s why…

Those granadas from the late 80s were fantastic! I had a load of them back then. They were so supremely comfortable for a family and easy to work on, cheap parts, even back then. Ford managed to get a nice riding, and handling large vehicle for not a lot of cash.

It’s comfy even by todays standards - in fact, with the higher profile tyres and soft suspension (which nothing has now) it’s in ways actually better for comfort and road noise

I remember someone in my street having a very late Granada Scorpio in a deep blue colour it was quite a late one I want to say it was a M reg (95) I was only a very young kid at the time ( but car obsessed) and I remember thinking it was quite a nice looking car, granted that might have been because the rest of the cars in the street were base spec escorts and Astra's but never the less the Granada definitely had something about it

I've always had a weak spot for the 90-92 saloon models and I have owned a few of them over the years.
First impression from everyone who got in was the space inside it and how comfortable it was.
The optional RS styling improved the look of it, made it more edgy, but if you add a reasonable lowering kit and some bigger wheels to fill the aches too and it was a really cool car.
Had a 1990 Ghia earlier with the complete RS styling, 40mm lower, 16" wheels and at the top of that, a 2.0 Cosworth engine from a Sierra, THAT was a fun car 😁

Great video. Can't remember when I last saw one of these on the roads. They weren't common even back in the 90s. Sierras were but Grannies weren't. Astonishing that it's only worth a grand.

This one has now officially gone to its new owner. I know I go on about it a lot, but I think a bargain for £1000. The interior is a very pleasant place to be. Merry Christmas 🎉

These cars were the first mass produced cars ever on the market that got ABS as STANDARD OEM equipement on all trim levels and all engines. It was a big selling point when these were new. When i was a student i had one of these as a turbo diesel taxi for a while. I loved it. I preferred it over the Mercedes W123 240D that i was used to drive.

Beautiful car. My late dad had one from new 1990 - 2002, almost same exact spec as this: the beautiful dark blue metallic color outside, and that lovely blue velour on the inside. 2.0 DOCH automatic, too.
BTW it is actually a 4-speed auto. Also, I believe that if you press the trip computer button once when it shows range, it then shows instantenious MPG, which I think is quite questionable to bring up when referring to it's consumption in general, since that varies from 0 to infinity depending on driving situation. I have found that on average this 2.0 auto takes around 6-7l/100km on a run (40-45 mpg imp.), but of course around town it consumes more, maybe 22-27 mpg. Still I find it quite reasonable considering the size of the vehicle. But it is not a fast car, that's for sure :)

    • @morvrpm
      @morvrpm  Год назад

I used to own a Granada Ghia X hatchback of similar vintage. The previous 2 owners were work colleagues. I only gave £50 for it with a slipping clutch which let go on the way home after picking it up. It was worth it even after the expense of a new clutch. I only sold it because I finally got my MK2 Mondeo back from the local Ford dealer following a collision where the insurance were umming and ahhing over whether it was going to be repaired. The registration number? H566 LPU

      I have the ferrous-donkey 2.9i auto.
I actually think that the manual 2.0i Ghia is the best engine/spec to have.
Performance is about the same as the 2.9i auto (0-60 is fractionally quicker), fuel economy is much better.
Ghia spec add kit that the poverty GL & L don't have (early GL didn't even have PAS as std).

I had a 1991 Granada Scorpio Cosworth hatchback I ran from 2004 until 2010. Metallic burgundy with black heated electric leather seats. Nice old bus. Would happily sit at 135 - 140mph (on a private test track). Took me and three mates to Le Mans in 2008 for the 24 hour sportscar race. Never missed a beat on that trip, although it liked to blow up transmissions. I went through three. The A4LD automatic transmission was a bit shit. The 'third' transmission was a combination of all the salvageable bits of the first two.

The problem is, in Cornwall, the second hand car market is shocking. You struggle to get a buyer, and popular cars are at least twice the price down here, as they are 100 miles up the line.
In 2018 we bought a 2008 Peugeot partner Escapade in Bristol for £1,500 with a new MOT. The local garage to us in Saltash had the exact same model of car, with 20k more miles for £4,395. You tend to find that people who want a particular car aren't willing to travel down here to buy one. And people down here that are buying have a limited choice.
That being said, if I had seen the granny for sale I would have bought it. I love old Fords. 9 of my first 12 cars were Fords. Cortina MK4, MK 2, 3 (x2) and 5 Escorts, a Capri, 2 Sierras, a MK2 Fiesta

We had a H reg Granda Ghia growing up and the seats were incredibly comfortable. Was a lot of space inside as well. Looking at your video compared to a mdoern car it's actually not that wide. You are almost banging elbows. We had the hatch which is more practical. This generation actually has the newer 4 speed automatic not the 3 speed. I can't believe it has heated seats. Remember the ride being soft. Lovely on motorways and in town but a bit wallowy in the back on a country lane. The MPG was not strong. About 22mpg. Might get 30 on a long trip. The exhaust sounds a lot louder than a remember. Especially at low revs. Mind ours was the 2.9 v6 not the 2.0.

So weird how Ford Europe were that conservative in styling such a fundamentally good car. The Mk I Granada really made a statement. The Mk II not quite as much but still pretty strong. Even the US-spec Ford Taurus looks a lot edgier. This is almost anonymous until you get inside and find that they continued improving it. Of course this one at 125hp-with-an-auto-and-behind-on-throttle-cleaner is a bit underpowered....great deal for the price.
