Thanks for this, most of this type of content is targeted at salesfolk selling whatever they can, not artists selling their own work.
Glad to hear it was helpful! I'm also very frustrated with the lack of information for artists getting into apparel, so I plan on sharing more as I learn. I've got an embroidered apparel video scheduled for tomorrow morning. 😊
@@madameberry awesome, I've been looking at that for some of my white on black work.
I'm very new, but super excited to get started. I only have roughly 5 to 7 pictures right now but I want to make this a business. Thanks for the video!
Thanks girl! This was so nice❤️❤️✨ V helpful
Hi MadameBerry, thank you for all your tips. This is the very first video I watch. I want to start printing my art work onto merchandise and I had no idea how to even start. I work with my hands but technology and printing is an obscure area that I am just learning about. Your video got me super excited about starting though. I have a long way to go but I can't wait to start making mistakes an start my shop, even if I end up with own art in half my closet! We must be our biggest fans :)
best video I've found on this so far, thanks!!
I have been searching hi and low for this info!!!!!!!!❤!!! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This video was beyond helpful. YOU ROCK!
Wait woah this is 100% what i needed
This was beyond helpful and left me wanting to buy some of your designs, thank you for sharing!
Great video, so helpful! I'm just beginning an online design degree and also want to start selling my art and designs online. I'm a complete newbie and this has given me so many ideas and confidence. Thank you so much ❤
keep up the good work i enjoy the same vibe and able to allow my vison to remix art into fashion
Extremely helpful
This is super useful! I definitely want to try to make my own merc some day and this is a great guide :)
I am exploring creating merchandise and have made art for many years with some sales and gallery shows. thanks for sharing your experiences.
Very helpful. I do my own art too, and few people cover this topic.
Best video for all my questions! ❤
You had me at the video sponsor lol take this subscription
This is awesome, Nice share thank you!
Love the Fire Emblem Fates background music :) Thanks for the video
Unless someone uploaded FE music to a copyright-free music site, I think you've misheard the music. But out of curiosity, which track are you referring to? I'd like to know if I've accidentally used copyrighted music lol
Do you recommend having money saved before selling? Like do they charge you first before you receive the profit? Super new to this stuff very helpful vid tho !😊🐈
Yes, they charge you before making the product. Depending on which sales platform you use, you may not get the money from the sale right away (or sometimes until after the order ships), so you should have some in reserve so you can start fulfilment.
This was very helpful thank you 🙏🏼
thank you for the informative vid, you helped me settle for Printful, I find its editing tools very helpful!
I do have a question however... is it really okay to use their clip-art and sell designs with it? I don't mean for example simply adding a little ready-made heart symbol on the sleeves of a t-shirt that has your own design on the front but rather using many clip-art designs to create your own thing. On their website they say it's fine as long as you don't download the design image but I'm still uncertain if that's okay to do both in terms of copyright but also in terms of effort cos I'm aware other people make their own designs from start to finish so idk if it would be fair to use clip-art instead.
Love your cute strawberry designs btw!
Thank you! If Printful is providing the clip art, it's totally ok to use it on Printful products but not elsewhere. As for effort, that's a personal decision. I like to make my products with custom art I make so they're 100% unique, but it's also ok if you're using premade assets you have the rights to, like Printful clipart. (Heck sometimes I buy the commercial right to some assets like icons or textures to save time and add them to my art)
@@madameberry thank you for your quick reply, you're a life-saver🙏
Such a great video much appreciated
Fucking finally, I found this video again. So helpful, thank you.
Great video! Short, simple, and detailed. Thank you. I have a question though.. I’m an artist as well and I plan on using Printful. When I create my art what do I create it on? You mentioned canvas. Can I create my art on paper or and iPad? And how do I get it from the paper to upload it on the computer? Not sure how to do that. Want to start making designs but don’t know what to use to create it and how to upload. Please help. Need money! 2:41
For the art I created on paper, I used a scanner to transfer the image to my computer. It required a lot of cleanup digitally though. For that I used Affinity Photo, my go-to photo editing app.
It would be much easier to create your art on an ipad, if you have one already. Using a program like Procreate will let you have a transparent background, instead of having to clean up a scanned image.
I love this!
How did you get your online store setup? And about how much does it cost to keep it up?
I have a few videos on that ("opening an online store in a month", and "Etsy vs website") if you want to learn more about my experiences with different websites and platforms
Great info
Hi! This video was very helpful. Can you do a video on how to properly make traditional artwork/paintings printable? Much love.💖
I have a short on my channel on how to scan a painting so it digitizes best, but I can put a full video on my to-do list!
thanks for sharing
Hey this was helpful I'm designing now and getting into drawings again and even had a person want my drawings for a tattoo what would you use to edit your drawings into transferable to items I'm thinking photoshop?
Photoshop would work for this
@@madameberry thank you
Is there a way to upload from a photo of artwork done on paper?
You'll probably want a scanner and an image editing program to clean it up with, but yes.
Hello! Kinda funny, but before today I'd never heard of you. Now I've seen this video and saw your art business posts in the Studio Lounge Discord! Lol! Maybe I'm supposed to pay attention! Anyway, nice video! Do you have tips for making a single piece look right on the front of a zip-up All-over print jacket?
Haha, hi! What about it looks wrong? The important thing about the all-over-print items is keeping in mind the safe print area and avoiding putting something important outside of it. If that means putting the main element to the left or right of the zipper, then that's something you'd need to figure out how to work the rest of the design around.
For big centerpiece items, I usually put them on the back of the garment if the garment has a zipper.
@@madameberry Yeah, I thought there would be a way to make a centerpiece item work, to where the zipper just ran through the image, but it doesn't at all. Maybe if you could repeat the image in a pattern. I'm mostly going with all-over print t-shirts and the back side of hoodies. Thanks!
@@christopherburnett1745 Patterns work pretty well for all-over print items, generally. And I've got a pretty funny misprint sample hoodie from when I tried that exact thing where I tried to print the design "across" the zipper (this wasn't all-over-print though, just regular DTG). I still wear it around the house, no reason to waste a perfectly comfy hoodie lol
Great information, thank you. It appears that there's a monthly membership fee with Printful, is that correct?
That is optional. I think it's meant for people and companies that have a very high volume of sales.
thanks for your video. does art sell well as opposed to hobbies, or jokes, and all the rest? I have been searching and can't find it's rankings.
I can only speak as an artist, but if I made slogan tee shirts with jokes or whatever on it, my audience would be very confused. They expect me to make art.
This video is for artists looking to expand their product range, not necessarily someone trying to make the most optimized product regardless of its content.
From mobile or laptop?
It's all website based so it's probably best to use a laptop or PC
do you have tips for marketing print on demand shops? i have one and use printful but i have trouble with getting orders
I'll start by saying that I'm not the best at marketing, but if you can identify the type of customer who would buy from you (as an example, maybe your ideal customer loves plants, books, and cozy atmosphere.) you can begin to build up a social media presence that comes across as relatable to that kind of people by talking about your favorite books, showing cozy plant spaces, and then eventually you'll have a following that's interested in the product you sell.
Of course this will be different depending on your audience. And the exact social media platforms you use will be different too (older people on Facebook vs younger on TikTok). But determining your ideal customer will help identify where you need to advertise.
I wouldn't hop on social media and start posting only about your product right away. You might get some sales that way, but more likely you'll just come across as too salesy and people won't know who you are and why you make what you make.
@@madameberry thank you so much this is helpful! I'm not really sure who my target is but I like designing cute and funny stuff
How can I upload my artwork and get them on my own private storage software to produce my own apparel without a middle man?
I'm not sure what you're asking. It looks like you won't want to use printful if you have your own private storage software (what does this mean?) and don't want to use a middleman. Since it seems like you prefer to do this yourself, look into sublimation heat presses.
@MadameBerry I mean, I want to upload my own artwork and print them on t-shirts.
Right, but what do you mean by "private storage software" and "without a middleman"? Because if you use a print on demand service (not just the one I showcased, but all of them) then you will be uploading to the service's cloud server, and the service acts as the printer as well as a middleman for shipping. Maybe you would prefer to hire a local printer instead?
@MadameBerry I meant to say I don't want to use anyone's service, I'd like to do it all myself. What I meant by "private storage" is keeping my designs on my own computer and access them when needed.
You're gonna have to look into getting equipment like a thermal heat press in that case.
What if you are a painter? Do I just take pictures of my paintings?
Scan it at a high dpi, 600 or more (or if you can't scan it, take a high resolution photo with a DSLR or mirrorless camera; if you don't have access to those, there are some professional services out there that do this) then clean it up and color correct it in a photo editing program. A photo taken with your phone or not properly cleaned up will look bad when printed.
Is there a way to make the clothes cheaper?
Not without taking a loss on each product. Print on demand is priced higher because the manufacturer has to switch methods and files constantly. If you want a cheaper price point for your customer you'd have to buy the clothes in bulk to get bulk discounts.
what software do you use Maam?
Either clip studio paint or affinity photo & designer. I have videos on my channel of both.
does it work with a photo of yourself?
Like mockups? Or printing a photo of yourself on a T-shirt
printing of a photo of self @@madameberry
@jennifercipriotti3462 yeah you can do that
Do you use Printful for artwork that would be printed and hung?
I don't, because I have my own printer. I've heard mixed things about their art/poster print quality so I'd recommend getting a sample to test the quality for yourself if you're interested.
@@madameberry can you please share what printer you use and what quality you get from it and how large a print it will make?
I use a Canon IP 8720, it prints up to 13x19 inches. I find the quality to be quite good, but the ink cartridges can get expensive.
@@madameberry thank you!
so did you build an audience first?
A fairly small one so far but yes.
@@madameberry Ok 👌🏾 I was just wondering how you made your decision on which illustrations to sell from your store & how many you started with.
If I remember correctly I started with six that all had a similar theme, but since it's print on demand I don't have to worry about inventory so if one didn't sell as well (and of course it was my personal favorite that sold poorly lol) I was only out the time it took to draw the design and my sample purchase.
@@madameberry ok cool thanks for helping with insight. So all you did was go fishing basically how long do you give a product to sell? and what amount are you looking for per product?
I usually only give things a few months to judge sales, but I've had (non-apparel) products that suddenly peak in interest 3 years after creating them, for some reason. My audience is very small and slowly growing. I don't seek out to target trends, since I'm an artist making products with my own art, so I really only expect to make 3-5 sales on an apparel item in a month, which is part of why I use print on demand. Honestly I wouldn't come to me for marketing advice, I'm still figuring a lot out myself. 😅
So, I don't have to pay anything...?
I'm broke AF so... I can't pay anything back to anyone...
When someone orders something you do have to pay for cost of production. There are other companies like Redbubble that you don't have to pay, they just send you your profit after.
@@madameberry then that might be my best bet
What I didn't understand is if you get the items shopped directly to you and from there you do the packaging and so on and then you ship it from your home/office or do you get it shipped directly from printify to the customer?
The print on demand company sends it directly to the customer. My most recent video talks about the pros and cons of this.
@@madameberry Nice, I will check it out. Thanks for the quick answer, you rock 💖
How do you make a website to sell clothes?
There's many services to set up a website. I use WordPress, but there are many simpler ones such as Squarespace or Shopify.
