    I own a 2,5 yo male. I've had GS before, same as Border Collie. There is nothing like Dutch, I would never get anything else from now on. These are velcro dogs, HIGH energy, obedient, extremely smart, eager to please. Depending on how you teach them, they could be very human friendly, or very suspicious. The biggest con is the whining, I agree 100%. If he knows we are in the car to go training, or playing, he would not stop until we get there, no matter what you say, do or yell. If the drive is one hour long.... well, you will not listen to some music in that car. Obedience training is a must; regular training, mental stimulation and serious exercise - a life necessity. This is a dog that you get knowing that you will need to spare at least 2 hours per day working with the dog. Not a dog for novice owners, not a dog that you rely as a protection dog unless you previously train the dog in that direction. By definition, these are WORKING dogs, not something that you toss in a backyard, or take for nice little walks twice a day. But it is totally worth it!

      I've never trained mine to attack. And he will do it on command. Genetics usually comes into play if yours doesn't attack.

    • @fs4637
      @fs4637 4 года назад +4

      @@kole6146 Agree, they do attack without any training, as many other breeds, but for protection work the dog needs to be focused on handler and on potential attacker. Other breeds, like GS, Cane Corso, and few others are more easily focused on the handler without much training, if there is a bond there. As for DS or Malinois, they have so much going on, they are so hyperactive that, without proper training, they tend to be all over the place. With the proper training, a DS or a Malinois could surpass breeds traditionally used for protection.

      @@fs4637 ya maybe because I am able to take my dog to work 7 days a week makes the difference. He's very put together in the head. He runs off leash on the ranch that I work at so since he was a baby it's just been all command oriented with him. He's had to protect me from a car jacking . Gave dude the order to get back in his truck. He didn't listen told Hank to eat. He follows my lead and temperament. If I'm good so are you. If there's beef Hanks the butcher lol. Most of these dogs will never have a off leash job so his imprinting and trust levels are different than most of his kind. I've had pits rotties and gsd and this dutchie is far superior than any others that I've owned. The bond is super strong.

      My dog is basically the same when we take him to training he has been better so he doesn’t bark as much as he used to but now he takes a toy and he whines it’s a lot better than him barking because he barks really loud but he is a really good dog I deafly suggest others to get this dog breed as long as they have The time in the space for this dog it is extremely important to exercise them since they are a very energetic breed if you do not do this correctly it could cause a lot of construction and anxiety for the dog and for yourself please if you are to have this dog breed treat it right because when I first got my dog he was so skinny like you could see his rib cage it was very sad I’m glad that we got him because now he is strong and healthy his life is definitely better now

    I bought my first Dutch Shepherd Puppy after losing my 14yr. Old. GSD Mix. My puppy Hop so, Far is easy to train and a blast at the park... his agility skills are just incredible right now, and he asks my for obediance commands on walks. He also, might enjoy scent games and activities later on but doesn't have the patience long enough to track scents right now,...which is fine, I find it boring sometimes, too, agility is so, much better...so far, he has been fun and easy to train. Hop likes to cuddle and get hugs or be picked up, he has been a pretty even keel...balanced puppy. I hope he stays that way as a teenage dog! Lol

    Nice Dutchies. I like how you are incorporating the sleeve as play. Keeping it informal, not worrying about the punch or re gripping. To many “experts” warn folks to not be the sleeve yourself or the relationship will be permanently wrecked. If you are training them in formal bite work then there are merits to that but damn it Dutchies just want to bite things and letting em have a go at the sleeve and you releasing it to them is after a good tug is some real good bonding. I know to never mess with a dog that carries a tire around in his/her mouth lol.

    • @predictionpain2632
      @predictionpain2632  4 года назад +1

      Exactly, I may not have a PhD in bite sleeves but I’ve been playing tug of war with dogs since I was a little lol. It’s already in their DNA to latch on to stuff, no training necessary. They haven’t developed any bad habits yet, it’s just a game to them. Thanks for your comment.

    Recently acquired my first Dutch Shepard male (4months old) and he has been wonderful so far. I am very comfortable raising and training working line German Shepards and still have 2 of them. The Dutch Shepard is definitely different from a German Shepard and it has been interesting to see the differences and how they interact with one another. Great videos and very informative.

    I adopted a D.S. as a rescue when she was 2 y.o., she recently died unexpectedly, under anesthesia during a dental cleaning. She was 5 y.o. The nearly 3 years I had with her was the best experience I have had with any of my dogs. She was very verbal, which I actually enjoyed, not an enormous amount of whining and if I told her to settle down, stopped. Also did not see her as any more active than the male Sheltie I had for 14 years or the fenale Shepherd/doberman mix I had for 13 years - that one was very high energy. My D.S. was smart, loyal, devoted, intuitive - she attended my husband's funeral with me and went around comforting everyone.
    I will say she was a nag and very routine oriented. She could also be a drama queen, in a good way. She made me laugh with the joy and enthusiasm she had for...just anything. She was a counter surfer but smart enough to do it when I was out of sight. The last thing she stole from the counter was a fresh baked loaf of bread, which she got while I was out grocery shopping. I came home to nothing but crumbs. I found half the crumbling loaf in my bed, under the covers!
    Oh, and she never chewed anything. I still have all her soft toys from when I first brought her home. First dog I have ever had that didn't destroy my house, my shoes, nothing. She loved car rides, hiking with me, was a great travel companion.
    She made me fall in love with the breed. I am hoping to, some day, find another rescue D.S. to adopt.

    Great video, great comments, many many years ago German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois and Dutch Shepherds were similar dogs. With the idea of purebreds and a closed stud book for each, they developed into breeds with unique but sometimes subtle differences. All three are great breeds, but do your research, they are all great, similar but different!

    Watching your DS’s is just like watching my Samus. She’s a DS, I got her from a breeder two years ago. I got the pick of the litter but she got parvo and died. Another lady had returned Samus to the breeder and I got stuck with her but I love her more than anything now. The whining she does usually amounts to “Why are you staring at that stupid thing (laptop / computer), the suns outside, lets go run around”. She’s with me or wants to be with me everywhere we go. My ex and I have another dog and when I watch Zelda, our ds / pit mix, Samus will try to protect me from her while I’m making food. Thankfully I have a huge back yard. I take her out about 1.5 times a day to the park but without a huge yard she would destroy my life. She runs the back yard like an agility course. She’s got these paths that she runs. In the house, I have to put blankets on my couches because of the way she jumps and digs in. Every time I get up, she tries to get me to take her outside. The most annoying thing that she does is try to herd me when she wants me to do something she wants which is usually all the time to go outside. Or when we go back in, she tries to herd me to stay outside. She doesn’t bark at random things but if someone comes to the house, or walks down the ally; she’s all over that. Some guy looked over my back hard and she jumped up at him. Anyway, random thoughts about mine after watching yours. Cinder looks identical to Samus. I got her from a breeder in AZ. Good luck man, I’d love to see more videos. Maybe I’ll get some tires for her, she looks like shes having fun.

    Great looking pair of dogs. I've never seen a dog learn as much by literal example as dutchies. You might try that approach. A word about the tires though. If there's any wear they do on the inner hoop, dump them or cut them out with an angle grinder or something. Years ago our dogs shreaded a tire and flat toped their k9s before I knew it. Those steel wire hoops are sharp under that rubber.
    Thanks for the video.

      Oh yes--they love plastic water bottles and all plastic bottles. FUNNY story about my Mal. Ordered some big chew bones from Chewy.com (which btw is a supreme co.) the day the shipment came I didn't go outside until the afternoon. Ziva had smelled the bones thru the box, plastic wrap on bones and bubble wrap in the box, she had the box and all other items all over the yard. Had ordered 3 as well as other items.Only 1 bone was left. She had no training in scent work but did that naturally. Sent a email to Chewy just thought they would enjoy it. They replaced the whole order and I certainly didn't expect them to do that. They always did different packaging on my orders after that. My granddaughter is a groomer and she told me they were great---She was right.

    Thanks for the video. I really like the look of your dogs and the breed as a whole. I was wondering how they get on with other pets/animals. I have a beautiful 12 month old Labrador who loves everyone and everything, so I wouldn’t want him hurt. My lab is training to be a therapy dog do you think the Dutch Shepard would be ok with kids or other people?

      That sounds like Jax whenever there is someone at the door, he gets way too worked up. I’m hoping he ages out of it, maybe yours will. Exercise can help with nerves, as well as human contact. It’s a tuff one, If you figure out something that helps let me know.

      My Dutchie does that too - her backhair also raises (heckles) and she would bark until she realizes it's one of the family members. Let me know if you find a solution, i'm very interested to see if there is a remedy for it as well.

    Great cons to consider. Everything is leading me to getting one so far that I've researched and how I felt around the one I did get to meet. Could you or someone else talk more about the whining situation? Also, I've read a lot about these being great search and rescue dogs and I love the fact they stick nearby. I am a trail runner, mountain biker, and back country skier. Anyone have experience with off leash trail time and how they do with approaching bikers/hikers? Getting in the way of your wheel/running into your legs as opposed to staying in front or behind? Thanks in advance! I am a 24 old renting homes, looking at adopting

  • @zuilia99
    @zuilia99 2 года назад

    I really love this breed and thinking about getting it once I'm financially a bit more stable. Only living in an apartment tho.
    I work at a shelter and could bring my dog with me so he could play with the other dogs all day long tho, so I guess that makes it reasonable(?) On the few free days I would go out a lot of course.
    Do you think that's very selfish of me or could it work for a dog like that?

    We have a Dutch Shepherd that we adopted from a Rescue Center in so cal. He’s a wonderful dog. The only issue we have is he has terrible separation anxiety. He’s wrecked base boards and door moldings and he’s even chewed the bottom of wooden doors. We don’t know if the anxiety is due to a traumatic past or if it’s the nature of the breed. He’s now on anti anxiety drugs to curb the problem. Any suggestions or insight?

    I have three DS, all boys. They are brothers we rescued from a horrible breeder that’s should never be allowed to own an animal ever. They are a handful but I love them so much. I’m working on training and it’s going good but could use some tips on how to stop them from barking and pulling around other dogs. Sometimes their book but sometimes they loose their minds and are hard to hold back. It’s crazy because any other time they aren’t aggressive at all. Just some dogs they loose their minds over. One of the boys I can take to the dog park and he’s ok. But the other two no way... they bark and go nuts before we get the the fence. Idk what to do. Ugh

      @predictionpain2632  3 года назад

      Yeah I get that, honestly I no longer do dog parks, and while on a walk I don't stop so they can make friends with other dogs, we just keep going. They just need to be friends with me and each other, that's it.

    How much exercise do Dutch Shepherds need a day?

    • @predictionpain2632
      @predictionpain2632  4 года назад

      It all depends, some need more than others. I give them at least an hour a day, but they play really hard. Mental exercise/ training is important as well.

      @946towguy2 3 года назад

      About 26-30 hours some days, but generally 3-6 15-30 minute intervals. Mental exercises and games, like which hand is the treat in, fetching toys by name, learning gestures and sounds like tongue clicks, thigh slaps, pointing, collar beep, etc.
