@ 13:00 REGARDING FOOD REFUSAL: You start talking about "... anybody throwing food over the fence..." "...picking food up off the ground ...." "….people trying to distract them with food ..." "...people hating on dogs, could be poisoned food..." It has hppened before, never let it happen again!!! I know first hand what you are talking about and it is the most ABSOLUTELY AWFUL THING EVER!!! Where I lived at the time, a neighbor, of all people, threw food over the backyard fence that he didn't want to try to eat himself because he said it was in the refrigerator too long!!! The result was that he killed my 4 month old puppy with his rotten food!! That was in 1974!! I think I was the only trainer at the time that was even doing this training! And again, that was something that I hardwired into my dogs, hardcore, no question about it, dead set on this training from the time my litters started to nibble chow all the way through fully weaned off mom and beyond!! From that very moment and still today I ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS train my dogs in food refusal, no matter what, that is something that is HARDWIRED in my dogs!! They only eat food that I give them, only from their bowl, never, never, never pick anything up off the floor or the ground, or accept anything from anyone but me, only placed in their food bowl, always in the same place where their food bowl goes and then only on command from me! I also teach my dogs to stop eating when I give that command and they do not resume eating until I give the eat command again! I have even taken this one step further by teaching the same refusals with water, only from me, only from their water bowl, only where their water bowl goes, only on command, stop when I say stop, drink when I give the command again! Yes, it is a lot of extra work and attention to every detail for my dogs but I have NEVER had another dog poisoned or sinkened from picking something up off the ground and eating it, taking anything from anyone else, food thrown over a fence, or over eating or eating too fast or drinking too much or too fast either or bouncy, energetic running or playing within an hour before and an hour after eating! Which, as you most likely already know, problems with bloat issues are life threatening even life ending issues!!! I have found that this level of control taught from the time the puppies start weaning till they pass away peacefully from old age, never bloated or poisoned is solid training!! This also teaches the dogs a 'self-regulated' intake control regarding their food and water!! When these tools are taught, my dogs learn the art of 'self-regulation' when it comes to chow time, no food aggressive behaviors, no gulping down massive mouths full in a huge hurry, which is where most of the preventable causes of bloat seem to occur! Combined with this intensive level of training, teaching them these techniques and tactics, it also gives them the confidence to know that they are always taken care of because they know that they can trust that I WILL MAKE SURE THAT THEY UNDERSTAND THAT I WILL ALWAYS GIVE THEM EXACTLY WHAT THEY NEED, WHEN AND WHERE THEY NEED IT, my dogs have never had an issue! These very same guidelines are interchangeable when crate training and making sure that they never have any separation anxiety issues either because they know 100% without any question that no matter what, I ALWAYS COME BACK, NO MATTER WHAT! THESE ARE THINGS THEY KNOW THEY CAN 100% COUNT ON, EVERYDAY, LIKE BREATHING OR HEART BEATING, THEY NEVER HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT, NEVER HAVE TO THINK ABOUT IT, NEVER EVEN KNEW THESE ARE THINGS THAT ANY DOG HAS EVER WORRIED ABOUT BECAUSE IT'S HARDWIRED INTO THEIR DEFAULT SYSTEMS LIKE BREATHING, BLINKING, HEART BEATING, ETC., NEVER ANY THOUGHT ABOUT IT!!! THEY NEVER EVEN QUESTION THESE THINGS BECAUSE THOSE THOUGHTS AND WORRIES NEVER FORMED WITHIN THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE!!! These are foundational training techniques that I have sworn by for 50 years now and just makes me wish I had known about these 20 years sooner!!! Would have made every facet of training so much easier from the very start of puppy training by building that rock solid foundation!!!!💜
