His Dark Materials stars Dafne Keen, James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Adapting Philip Pullman’s award-winning trilogy of the same name, which is considered a modern masterpiece of imaginative fiction, the first season follows Lyra, a seemingly ordinary but brave young woman from another world. Her search for a kidnapped friend uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children, and becomes a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust. As she journeys through the worlds, including our own, Lyra meets Will, a determined and courageous boy. Together, they encounter extraordinary beings and dangerous secrets, with the fate of both the living - and the dead - in their hands.

His Dark Materials: Season 1 | San Diego Comic-Con Trailer | HBO
It's about time Golden Compass is getting the series it deserves
After they're finished with the series from Pullman, please, for the love of god, can someone make a good series based on the Paolini books. The Eragon movie was such a waste of the material.
@@UnicycleSoul yes this absolutely must happen! The Eragon movie was awful
i enjoyed the eragon movie, wish they made a sequel for that too, wish they did a sequel to golden compass too that cast was superb
@@liammorris1018 I enjoyed both of those too for what they were, but Eragon veered from the source material too much, and golden compass didn't end in the right place for me (unless they intended to show us the last few chapters over flashbacks in what wouldve been the subtle knife movie). The issue is that both these books have too much depth to accurately be communicated as a Movie.
@@UnicycleSoul I don't think an Inheritance Saga show will come about for a while, i wish it would. But i have a feeling people may begrude another magic and dragons show at the moment, and the more ignorant viewer may compare it to game of thrones and not give it a chance. Hopefully that type of fantasy will start to feel more novel in the mainstream in the next few years
Glad to see HBO learnt to deal only with complete book series
shavp so true. Leftovers is a masterpiece that deserves more praise
Even though he wrote and is writing a prequel series that gives a lot of backround.
This comment is too real
It’s not really HBO’s fault, it’s D&D’s fault. They rushed the series so they could go and ruin Star Wars.
@@Gaddo_ BULLSHIT. The decision to end the series now was made years before they announced they're joining Star Wars. Unless Martin made some deal with HBO, it's his fault for not completing the books. D&D signed up for adapting the story, not to write it.

Whilst the film 'The Golden Compass' was fine, even great at times, I'm so excited to see the left out third act of The Northern Lights and hopefully The Subtle Knife and Amber Spyglass in the future.
Robert Brookes subtle knife is coming for sure because they just cast will parry a few weeks ago and BBC/HBO bought a second series because it was testing so well. I’m excited to all the windows they create and even the subtle knife cutting into universes. But amber spyglass is such a vast story and i worry things like Mulefa or the gallivespian and angels won’t look very good on screen because the way they are described is so specific and angels are described as almost a shimmer of light that’s impossible to see in the day light. But as for golden compass/northern lights this looks spot on. I think bolvangar is scarier here than anything else in the series. That large blade for intercision making a quick cut. I know that scene is going to be hard to watch lol
Season 1 will cover the first book, and they already confirmed season 2 for the second!
I loved the movie, always upset me that there wasn't a second part.

I'm quite skeptical; I love the books, but the casting seems slightly off; I always remember Lyra and what's-her-face-golden-monkey having blonde hair, and what's-his-face-texan being and elderly man. Maybe it's just the movies that planted them in my mind (I do prefer the movie's cast over this)
You know ever since the golden compass came out forever ago i was always wondering "wheres the sequal?" Now hopefully i will see an end to this story that was my fav when i was a kid made into a production show!!!
I knew the second the Golden Compass ended there would be no sequel. It was obvious from how it ended that they were going to avoid the "true" ending and pretend it was a happier one.

@Erric Emerson It's Fahrenheit 451 all over again
@PJPF The point I think you're missing is that throughout history, and in the book series, religion has been an authoritarian institution exalting their word and their god as superior. And in rebellion against religion, the characters were fighting against an authority they did not approve of. So you're right that authoritarianism is an obstacle in the story, but that is just looking at one part of the antagonist set up by the author.
Indeed, you can imagine my feeling when I heard that The Golden Compass was a flop in the USA (one reason they didn't do any sequels) mostly because of their religious shit that said: "don't watch the movie because there is atheism in it". For anyone confused about this, let me explain where this show comes from. Philip Pullman wrote a fantastic, classic , trilogy of books called His Dark Materials. They consisted of The Golden Compass (Northern Lights), The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. He also recently wrote a prequel, The Book of Dust. In 2007, a movie based on the first book was released, The Golden Compass. Quite frankly, it was... bad. It was oversimplified and lacked much of the depth that the books had. It also made some DRASTIC changes to the plot that did not turn out well. It was an (in my opinion) dull portrayal of the books, and it got way too much publicity for something that (again, in my opinion) is trash. Anyway, now this show is coming out, (I think) based on the whole trilogy. To me, this show looks fantastic. I am somewhat expecting something like what happened with A Series of Unfortunate Events will happen with this - a wonderful, unique, complex, series of books is adapted into a bad, oversimplified, movie, but then turned into a fantastic TV (or Netflix) series.
yes! the ending of the movie was SO BAD and left 0 room for the plot of the third book to play out in subsequent movies. I'm so glad that got canned and hopefully they'll do the trilogy justice in this series. If they fuck it up in the 11th hour like GoT season 8, I'm not sure I'll ever recover. These books mean so much to me. I'm even more invested in HDM than I ever was in ASOIAF.
L S They actually did shoot a proper ending but cut it out. You can see some footage of the deleted ending in the film trailer and video game cutscenes.
L S yeah! I haven’t watched almost all of got so idk about that, but I am also really attached to the hdm books.
Sofia Laya I agree with the visuals 100%. The film was beautiful and I but I feel like I will enjoy this more.
Caleb Goodman - Studio got involved and if rumours are true so did “The Church” (and I don’t mean the band). All to the detriment of the film. What I will say in the films defence is that it made me go to the books which are excellent.
*who's ready to fight them GOBBLERS!*
This better not be shitty. Those three books honestly mean a lot to me
it most likely will be shitty but you can always hope but its not your decisions its HBO so go tell them it better not suck
It will be at least better than the shitty movie we had previously

Ah yes the mulefa. That was a very alien planet.
I googled them once, you’ll find artists renditions
The spine-free diamond skeletal frame kinda throws you off, huh? Same here.
Mulefas, I also want to see them.
I was saying the same thing when I heard about this.
Between this and Netflix's The Witcher, I think my disdain for Game of Thrones Season 8 will soon be remedied.
Plus the prequel series coming out next year about the age of heroes
Nostalgic Bliss That truly will be interesting. Since GRRM is helping out as well you know it will be better then S8.
The Witcher still looks far too cheaply made for me, but we’ll see how it goes.
Shut up.
Season 8 was awesome. There just is no pleasing uber nerds.
Omfg Holy shit they really did it 😭😭😭 I’ve been waiting since 2007 I always had faith they’d acc complete the trilogy
OMG me too.....I'm sooooo happppppyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!! We must sustain the ratings so they don't cancel it after the 1st season !!!!!!
Between this and Watchmen, HBO isn't sitting idle to find GOT's replacement.
Don't forget the prequel series to game of thrones is also currently filming. HBO has taken over. Almost all of their shoes are amazing

Different Pope. And he has better fish to fry than making an issue out of a tv series.
This is why it was a good idea that BBC got involved. They have no one they need to please, because they have no commercials and therefore have more creative freedom.

Putting Dafne Keen at first place in credits, BRAVO HBO!

Yep or if going younger I can somehow imagine Sam Rockwell pulling it off

untergehermuc have you read the books? Because he’s not really god he’s much worse, he’s an angel who pretended to be god to control humanity. His death is also actually not very epic either (but i think that’s on purpose). Metatrons death however is epic af. You know why the movie “The Golden Compass” was a disappointment to certain people? Most high concept fantasy novels just have too much going on to fit into two hours. Sometimes three hours isn’t even enough time.
Thirteen one hour episodes? Should be enough for the entire first book and some of the second.
!!! this
Agreed. It should be nice. Some review the books as a deconstruction of Christianity, the direct opposite of _'The Chronicles of Narnia'._ I disagree. I feel that _'His Dark Materials'_ tells the story of the lack of imagination, the absence of a childish nature, that happens all too suddenly and permanently to evil people as they become adults forced to _'face reality'_ at far too young an age.
redxsage You’ve gotten so much more out of it than most people. I’m impressed. And trust me, that’s not sarcasm.
@@redxsage didn't Phillip Pullman actually say it was the opposite of Narnia?
