  • Casting on with a Long Tail requires you to not start your slip knot close to the end of the strand. It will require you to use two strands that intertwine with each other.
This technique takes a bit of getting used to and isn't very difficult.
With your non-dominant hand, you will position the yarn like the yarn is doing a sling-shot. It appears like the needle is going to shoot off into the distance. To get the yarn to wrap around your thumb and pointer finger isn't very hard.
Form a slip knot and slide onto the needle. With the two yarn strands hanging down. Clamp the yarn into your fingers and use your thumb and pointer finger and put them between the two hanging down strings. Open your finger and thumb apart. Tilt your hand backwards so the yarn wraps around the thumb and pointer finger as seen in the photo.
Using the needle, travel up the thumb and collect the loop from the thumb but don't let the loop go. Swivel the hook to the pointer finger and collect the yarn from the pointer finger. With your thumb, place the thumb yarn over the tip of the needle. Pull strands tot and restart again.

Thank you Mikey for demystifying this technique, my Mum always used it at great speed, but I could never get the hang of it. It makes a much more even edge. 🌍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🌍

Oh gosh Mikey, I've tried this technique over and over again and couldn't get it watching other youtubers. I watched your video and bam something clicked and I got it 😀. Thank you so much, now I have to learn the difference between knit and purl and more. Hopefully I can keep my hands relaxed enough so it doesn't hurt because of my tendons.

I have been trying to learn to knit since 2019, the only cast on I could do was wrapping around the thumb. Thanks to you and one other knitter, I finally figured out the long tail cast on. I often have to search out alternative tutorials as my brain, hands, and eyes do not always agree about what was said or shown. I only had to live 50 plus years to discover many others are the same way. Thank you for your patience and generosity of your time and talent.

Years ago, I learned a looping method of casting on which I no longer remember how to do. I came across this method about 15 years ago and it’s the only method I use when I infrequently knit. Much prefer crocheting, but think I’ll watch your other tutorials and pull my needles out. Thanks for the nudge.

Hi Mikey, that's how I learned to cast on when I learned the Continental style knitting also referred to as picking. That's what my girlfriend's mother called it. She was from England & that's how she learned from her mother & what the knitting process was called.

    Hi Mickey
Love your videos! This is my go to cast on for its flexibility and stretch, and gives a nice finished edge. If you've run out of tail length before you have finished your cast on, you know it's frustrating. Forgive me if you've talked about this in another video. The two methods I use to determine the length of the tail is: A) choose a multiple of your pattern length (say 120 stitches on the pattern, 12 sts for my sample). Make up the sample, undo it, and multiply that length of the tail part by the number needed (in this example 10 x the original tail). Then add a few inches for safety. B) Work your cast on from both ends of the skein, or from a 2nd skein. Then cut it. This way leaves you with one extra tail to weave in at the end so I prefer method A.

Thank you! I left Marly’s video at yarnspirations because I was completely confused and now I’ve got it! I wonder who invented this diabolically complicated cast on?

I learned only this cast on when I learned knit. Love to crochet because it is faster for me. Is there an advantage of one over the other? Thanks. Great tutorial.

When I do this, I make sure the tail is what's on my thumb and the finger has the yarn coming from the ball. That way the loops are coming from the ball rather than the tail, which lets the tail last longer and less likely to run out of tail before I'm done. Hope that's helpful.

If you wrap the yarn around the needle count 1 rotation as a stitch and allow about 4 extra inches this is how long your tail should be

How do you know how long to make the tail? Nobody has ever been able to tell me how to figure it out. All I hear is, "make it long enough". How long is that?
My aunts taught me a single finger cast on. It's like the way you wrapped it around your thumb but without the other piece of yarn, just wrap it around the finger and slip it off onto the needle. What are the pluses and minuses of each type of cast-on?

That’s a great question. I just guess and hope fir the best. I prefer the cast on that is twist and transfer.
