- Undercover Cops was a classic arcade beat 'em up in the same vein as Capcom's classic Final Fight series. The game was developed
by Irem and first released to arcades in Japan in 1992.
Upon initial release, the game was a Japan arcade exclusive, but it was later ported to the Super Famicom in March of 1995, and eventually saw a North American release on the SNES as part of Retro-Bit's Undercover Cops Collector's Edition.
The game's story is set in the year 2043, in a post-apocalyptic future, with a world government dispatching 3 undercover cops called "City Sweepers", who're tasked with putting an end to the lawlessness ravaging the streets.
Players took on the role of 1 of 3 cops, including the ex-karate master Claude, and the ex-pro football player Bubba, as well as the female character known as Flame, en ex-vigilante turned crime fighter. The name's were changed to Matt Gables, Zan Takahara, and Rosa Felmonde on console releases.
Besides battling criminals in the streets, the trio is also tasked with taking down the evil mad scientist Dr. Crayborn, who's planning to bomb the cop's city.
Game play in Undercover Cop's was faster and more fluid than Capcom's Final Fight from 1989. While the game's controls felt fluid and responsive, the game lacked in terms of available fighting maneuvers. This was a common theme amongst beat 'em up's the era, where a few simple moves was all you had to work with.
On the plus side, the game offered plenty of objects to be used as weapons, including steel beams and pillars that make for quite the effective weapons when surrounded by enemies from all sides. Although, it takes a few seconds for your character to rip the beams and pillars from the ground.
While fighting maneuvers may have felt limited, the characters do have a very effective evade/dash maneuver that can wipe out multiple enemies with a single blow, and is a very useful tactic to move out of the way when surrounded by enemies.
Besides fighting action, developers also took a cheeky, comical approach to some elements of the game. For instance, players eat snails to replenish health, you get to beat your opponents with a wet fish, and one of the bosses is a hyper-masculine female that looks like something out of WWF.
Undercover Cop's would also go onto to spawn a Manga comics series in Japan, and there was even a Game Boy spin-off known as "Undercover Cops: Hakaishin Garumaa"; though, this version was a turn-based strategy/RPG, in stark contrast to the arcade and console versions which were squarely beat 'em ups.
