This is absolutely bananas!! "child rearing is about teaching children to be high functioning hypocrites", "the real you is something you should be ashamed of" what?!?!?! I get that there can be value in understanding the disconnect between who you believe yourself to be and the impressions that others have of us, but I absolutely cannot get behind the notion that I should jettison all sense of who I think I am and only believe myself to be what others say I am. That is profoundly unhealthy.
I didnt hear it that way.To me it was in the sense of Id, ego, superego. Where kids are pure impulse/natural drive, and the prosess of rearing is promoting their ego and enforcing a functioning superego. The "real" you is viewed as all your unmoderated tendencies, which come out in situations where you are tired, angry, distracted etc. If people acted only in accordance with their immidiate desires there would be chaos, hence we should be ashamed of it as the shame (essentially the superego) is responsible for making us function with eachother, and the ego is the moderating agent working to make the hypocrisy. Balancing the internal desires and drives channeling it into useful behavior or acceptable patterns. Ill grant he seems a little bit of a cynical guy, but i think his point makes sense if i understood the gist of it correctly.

Yeah, assigning archetypal negative behavior to how people treat their children and dogs… says a lot more about Dr. Hogan than anything about humans.
