An unhappy Hermes 3000 gets some attention
Hi , worked on hermes typewriters in the 1970s in Newcastle upon Tyne in the uk , these videos bring back the memories.
Just found a Hermes Media 3 in a garage sale and I'll be happy to service it properly. Good start with the tip you gave to remove the case. Thank you! Will see if I can find some videos for the rest of the operations! Cheers from France.
Thank you so much for this video! I have one 3000 sitting under the desk with exactly this issue and I never knew what caused it. Just took the body off and sure enough the frame is bent, just like in the video. Now I know how to fix it, thank you!
Edit: it worked! After fixing this I noticed that my machine had another fault. Towards the end of the page the carriage was still grinding, but it was not the carriage touching the body like before, it was internal. I found that the gear rack (is that the right word? anyway, the flat long metal stick with the teeth that sits underneath the carriage and engages with the center gear of the escapement) was misaligend. It was just a tiny touch to high, so that the teeth of the center gear would slip out of it and jam the thing. To solve that I took the platen out and the metal sheet underneath it and the three set screws were then accesible. It took a bit of trial and error to find the right hight, but now the carriage can move completely free without any grinding. I am so happy!
