- The film tells the compelling story of a man extraordinaire, his mettle, his grit, his incorrigible optimism and the world through his eyes. Satish Gujral. A painter, a sculptor and an architect. Born in pre-partition India in the year 1925, an illness fatally impaired his hearing at the tender age of eight. The film traces the progress of his artistic genius and also presents a motivating account of human spirit.
After the initial years of coming to terms with his condition, Satish joined the Mayo School of Art in Lahore to study Applied Arts. In 1944, he took admission in the Sir J.J. School of Art, Bombay, where he interacted with the Progressive Artists Group, who are credited with heralding modern art into Indian. In the year 1952, Gujral was awarded a scholarship to go to Mexico, for an apprenticeship with well-known muralists Diego Rivera and David Sequeiros. This phase had a lasting impact on his life and work.
It is said that the art of a nation is deeply entwined with the socio-cultural fabric of its being. Contemporary Indian art has acquired a special place in the world art firmament in the last few decades. Today it depicts concerns of a nation that has progressed from 'newly independent' to a 'fast-progressing nation'. Along with Gujral's story, the film touches upon the story of India from partition to now, exploring the immediate social context that gave birth to the ideas behind Gujral's works and unraveling his artistic thought-process.
