The one match I would have loved to see. Michael Spinks vs. Evander Holyfield. Both natural light heavyweights who did the impossible and won the heavyweight championship.
Very nice guy indeed, good boxer too. But its obvious he is afraid of Tyson (No shame in that, only 2 men at this time wasent afraid of Tyson, the man with a deathwish and a the man without common sense).
Anybody would of went down to Tyson at that time. He was a complete fighter at the time. Then he fired his old team and got with Don king and you know how the story went.
I wonder what Suzanne Vega sang on the show, since that part wasn't uploaded. She was on SNL a month before this and sang "Luka" and "Marlene on the Wall." I really like "Luka," and am always surprised that song dates back to 1987.
Lettermans disrespectful fatalistic view of MICHAELS upcoming tyson fight is not funny, its almost taunting. His interview as regards future tyson fight should have been more level imo
Michael Spinks wasn't in Mike Tyson's league, although he was great for a light heavyweight, he couldn't stand the might of a deadly force like Iron Mike... 1st round knockout loss...
No one could beat Tyson at that stage in his career. The guys was on the up and had everything to win for. Tyson achieved everything too early and lacked discipline!
Micheal Spinks started off at 168 pound light heavyweight. Tyson's win over him looks good on paper now, and was a massive achievement back then, but doesn't compare to beaten a real heavyweight with good ability these days.
Thanks for this. I like Michael and never see him interviewed -- one of the best light heavyweights of all-time.

Or holyfield vs saad muhammad... damn that wouldve been an explosion
Not sure what you mean with natural. Any normal adult at 6"2" and with a fully developed man body will naturally be over 205 pounds ie heavyweight.
Mr Spinks you are the real deal. Modest and a truly Great fighter.

3 actually. DOuglas, Holyfield and Lewis
Razor ruddock wasn't scared
@@nickkozanas1147 In the early rounds of the first fight, I actually thought DRR actually had a chance before the ref shut it down prematurely.
@@ddiesel1836lennox lewis was definitely afraid
there was nothing to indicate that@@crabb9966
a very polite, well spoken guy.
That's racist
@@sator6794 tell me how; i’m curious
Always liked Spinks...nice interview
I remember when he fought Tyson,he was so scared that i felt sorry for him.
Only if we knew some of us was only 17 at the time only if we knew the future
I feel bad for Spinks. He seems like such a nice person. It was amazing how much fear he had of Tyson.
But he still stepped in that Ring though. Dreaded with Fear he faced it and got $13million dollars in his Pigy Bank.
in that era, you'd have to be insane not to be afraid of mike tyson
respect to anyone who got in the ring with him. he was on another level
oh god he sounds exactly the same as today ^^
I just remember the fear in his eyes when squaring off with Tyson. He lost before it started.
Damn, the fight against Tyson was lost right here. He wasn’t keen on it at all!
Kuddos for his honesty. Fun guy.
I love these treasured episodes. I miss this show sssooo much. Thank you Jerkylfish for posting.
I like Spinks but he lost the fight before the first bell rang. The look on his face said it all, he was terrified
kjek1 in this interview he wasnt convincing anyone was he!?!? 'Do u wanna fight Tyson?' - "HELL no!!".
He seems like a good dude tho!
That was the case but Spinks was still a Great Light Heavyweight and a quality Heavyweight. Good awkward fighter. Respect.

that body punch tyson gave him was something vicious
I'm looking for Dave's episode from March 2, 1988. He had a satellite interview with a guy from St. Louis Lambert airport and that was my dad

Yes and theres no shame in that. But you dead right

I remember when i saw the match between him and mike.....he was terrified....his eyes said all...everybody was praying for him in that moment
"Please Oh Please dont let Mike see this Please...i dont really want no part of no Tyson oh please help me"
I think that's nothing to be ashamed of. After all that hook came from Iron Mike Tyson
Fair play to him for getting in the ring with Tyson, it's a lot more than anyone else would ever do, and that's for any amount of money
3:35 He said it.😄🥊🥊
In retrospect, that sounds almost painful.
All I gotta say is, you gotta love Classic Dave.
90 seconds he was gone
3:43 uh yeah CLASSIC
"...one step closer to ending my career." "YEAH!"-Letterman. HAHAHAHAHA
Michael spinks greatest of all time😃
lollll

Spinks already looked a little staggered thinking about the prospect of a fight with tyson,
YOu're not watching the new warrior in town, golovkin?
No, they don't :-)
Really!?!
I feel like they started repeating themselves over and over lol
