The Quonset huts in the closing credits look to be the actual Marines used originals from either Camp Pendelton or even MCRD San Diego. I saw similar ones in 1980 at MCRD during recruit training, saw them all over the vast terrains of Camp Pendelton. Of course, most of the Gomer Pyle series was shot on a Paramount studio lot.
I thiught there should have been a real finale where Gomer married Lou Ann, immediately after the wedding get an honorable discharge,and started a nightclub with his wife.
As portrayed by Frank Sutton, Sgt. Carter may have been loud and bad-tempered, but he was much more likeable than Sgt. Hartman in 'Full Metal Jacket '!
Not a bad way to end a hit show. Jim Nabors wanted to try other things after Gomer Pyle (which was behind the top-rated Laugh-In in the Nielsen ratings), in his words, "reach for another rung on the ladder, either up or down." The Jim Nabors Hour was that (Jim brought Frank Sutton and Ronnie Schell with him for his new show), but was canceled as a result of the so-called "rural purge" of 1971. FYI: There were talks of George Lindsey taking Nabors' place, renaming the show "Goober Pyle USMC", which sounds a whole lot like a poor carbon copy of the original. (As a matter of fact, Lindsey had auditioned for the Gomer role on its parent series.)

I'd have to disagree. I think both characters were likable, except R. Lee Ermey was more harder-edged than Frank Sutton.
