There's probably some kind of curse when it comes to Arturiana, as there's probably no other collection of material that has been adapted so many times, yet still has no movie or TV series that its fans can form a consensus on being "the good one".

@@helsby1797I don't think your argument works to be honest, because when it comes to written medias like novels, despite the multiple approaches to the mythos we still have a lot of versions that are acclaimed by the general arthurian public, like Bernard Cornwell's Warlord Chronicles; yet, when we go to films and tv series the scenario is much different, one will say Boorman's Excalibur is good another will say it is too long and dull, other might say the Merlin 2008 series is good, but another will say it is cheesy and repetitive...there is simply no serious version that managed to not be devisive.

I really enjoyed Lawhead's adaptation of the Robin Hood legend, but that's the only Lawhead books I have read thus far. I love the King Arthur legend but I have been disappointed with the film adaptations I have seen thus far. However, I am excited for this show and I am encouraged by Boreing's enthusiasm as a fan of King Arthur and of Lawhead. I know that he will do everything in his power to make sure that this is the best show it can be, much like Peter Jackson and The Lord of the Rings. Those movies aren't perfect, but you can see how much Jackson loved those books. Similarly, I don't expect DW's Pendragon Series to be perfect, but I know they will give it their best effort.

It's just so obvious. Someone else has done the hard part and given you this amazing story. Now you take that and try and recreate that on a Screen. That isn't that easy of course but so much of the dirty work has been done. Proven appeal to an audience and an audience ready to go. Then someone like me who isn't going to read the books but am how excited about the series. (i'd heard about it for a while but I only just discovered it was about Arthur )
The regular production companies see it as an excellent way to promote their "message" which is antithesis to the message that made it popular in the first place.

I personally can't wait for the show, the production values look very high from all production videos that came out so far. Also, they've just released a new production video that you'll love watching, especially since they've shown scenes with a certain prominent character that is a favorite of yours. I agree with almost all of your comments here but just 2 corrections - Bret Cooper isn't just a "conservative commentator" she's also an actual actress - she has acting experience, which allowed them to cast her in this show and as "Snow White". Also, it would be incorrect to say that Roman Britain "would have had some racial diversity" - the amount we're referring to would have been miniscule(less than 0.1%), mainly through slavery, army and trade coming from the Roman occupation itself. As you mentioned yourself, the other current versions of the Arthurian tales are not having great successes in recent years and Imo, it's simply due to the fact that none of them have been respecting the source material nor have been authentic. You would expect major production companies to create good fantasy shows and good adaptations but that hasn't been the case in the past few years with a few exceptions. It seems that the DW's adaptation of "The Pendragon Cycle" will break this trend.

    • @theloneranger8725
      @theloneranger8725 7 месяцев назад

It is indeed very difficult to "respect the source material and be authentic" when your main goal of the production is to insert as much wokeness and identity politics into the story line as can possibly be done. My favorite fantasy book series is The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. For years we rabid fans of that series hoped a studio would bring it to life on either the big screen or the small one. When Amazon finally did so, they totally made a mess of it by deviating massively from the source material. That's why I am looking forward so much to this DW project.

I have a feeling that it won't follow the Hollywood template of taking an original IP, discarding everything that makes it what it is, and then doing whatever the f**k they want with it. At the very least, I think you can expect it to at least stay true to the source material, with minimal changes necessary for adaptation to film. One thing, though, I always pictured Morgan le Fay as a brunette, not a blonde, but that's just me. I have never read the books, but I have just taken them up for this. I have a hard time finding fantasy novels that I actually like and enjoy reading, but so far, this one seems like it's going to be a good one.

There are no dragons in the series because a Pendragon is a dragon. A dragon is "a clear sighted person" who has inherited divinity from the sea wolf, Neptune. Arthur was a Pendragon. They are spiritual rulers. They were Priest kings. They left the affairs of governance and taxation to their government. They ruled from a religious standpoint and, they were the heads of state. The Pope is a Pendragon by all definitions. Jesus Christ, a Pendragon. Buddha, a Pendragon. King Charlemagne was a Carolingian King. The Merovingian dynasties were ruled by Kings they called Pendragons. Eventually, the governing class of the Franks became the kings who were effectively the official heads of state, as opposed to having their highest priests as kings. This was when Frankia changed from the Merovingian to the Carolingian dynasties and, you had rulers like King Charlamagne who was not the head of the church and, they considered the Frankish country to be subservient to the Pope as their religious leader rather than Pendragons. The first time these people were referred to as actual dragons might have been when the Alani began migrating from the Caucasus Mountains up along the Danube into Europe. Characters like Odin and Attila the Hun were part of the same migrations as the Alani. These rulers were referred to as Dragons to dehumanize them in order to psychologically prepare Europeans for war with the invading Huns. That's where the Teutonic myths of Dragons comes from. Referring to invaders, like Odin and Attila, as demon serpents is where all the dragon myths come from.

You definitely hit a lot of points on the head. This looks amazing because they are using common sense. No need to force certain actors and actresses. If they really want to add a black Arthurian character then they could easily do a story of Morien or Sir Morien. Instead they swap out Bedivere or Gawain or even Guinevere. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the series Merlin and thought it was good, I even thought Angel Coulby was a beautiful and great actress, but she did not work as Guinevere and it took something away from the show.
Looks like this show on the other hand is saying enough of forcing things, we will just follow the books and do something amazing. You know what the show will be attacked for though and it will be both hilarious and tragic at the same time.

I love the Winter King series so much. Historical without all the later Mallery fluff. I'd like to see an even harder Arthur War Lord and no queen, just him rolling with a ton of women, LOL. But The Winter King is far better. I love Merlin so much in it. I just wish he and Nimue had remained a couple. I love the movie Merlin where they get to stay together and regain their youth + the way it depicts Vivian as Maeb's sister. She is clearly fae so I really appreciate that..
I love how in Harry Potter Merlin is supposed to be a Slytherin, a little known fact.
Okay there is all my Merlin obsession. LOL

I will say, I was very proud of Iain De Caestecker for his role as Arthur because I've loved him for his role as Fitz on Agents of SHIELD. And i couldn't get over how different his role as Arthur was. I felt that series had some good production value to it as well. But the weird casting choice for Merlin just took me out. I wanted to get past it just to enjoy Iain.. . But I guess there was something about the show that didn't draw me in enough because I haven't gotten past about two episodes. But Im super excited about this.

Go WOKE, go BROKE. It's nice to see that The Pendragon Cycle isn't focusing on "checking those boxes".
Netflix's The Witcher, especially season 3, made me feel like I was watching a bunch modern day New-Yorkers playing a game of LARP. It was completely ridiculous.

The weird thing to me is that there IS ethnic diversity in the King Arthur legends. The three brothers, Palamedes, Safir, and Segwarides; plus Morien-all knights of the round table. I’d love to see their stories on the big screen, but Hollywood refuses to tell them.

Even if there are serious flaws with the series it's going to be refreshing watching a historical European film without 8 random black people thrown in. It breaks the 4th wall and disrupts the story. It's unfortunate you have to go to a right wing media outlet to get historical accuracy
