As a car guy that's a veteran of some pretty tough restorations, seeing all those hard to find parts getting crushed, well yes, that crushes me too. Trims, taillights, panels, yep theres people out there desperate for those parts, and even whole cars, when you got skills, nothing is beyond saving. Would have been better to have sold each for scrap value to an enthusiast or restorer.

Were you able to save some of those parts from the remains of that shed? I know that some people see old cars and trucks like this and say that they are being recycled here. However, they are gone forever. Thanks for working so hard, you and Joe, and saving what you can. I am glad that some of his collection was saved. I'm sure there are many reasons that people feel compelled to crush collections like this, with money not being one of them. @speedbuggy5558 2 года назад +1

@@owlseye32713 I know what you mean.
      I've been helping a friend restore a 64 Bonneville.
It has a lot of one off parts. Especially body and interior parts.
There are a few specialty Pontiac restoration part houses like Aimes, but the 64 Bonneville is still a car of its own in a lot of ways.
It's been a two and half year project.
It was luckily in a garage for the last 24 years, or it would've probably ended up being a parts car itself.
It has 70 thousand actual miles on it.
But the only thing Maintained on it was the body and interior.
And it was wrecked at least once in its life.
The front clip was replaced except for the hood and right fender.
      Wasn't done all that well.
The Core support was bent too.
But probably good enough for most people that don't know any different.
Had the bumpers straitened and rechromed, yes they got used a bit.
Reshimmed the fenders hood, right door, and trunk lid.
Fixed a few dents and made the body straight.
And he chose to have it wrapped. Pearl White.
It's always garaged, and the wrap is Garranteed 5 years, which is longer than most paint is these days, at least here in California.
The engine and transmission were both toast.
The rear end was still good. Although if it ran much longer the driveshaft would've probably litterally fell out.
Some people don't understand noises or vibrations.
Anyway I've already blabed too much.
But the car was almost completely apart.
Just not all at the same time.
It's not a show car, just a really clean driver.
      And a driver it is!
Not like today's cars at all.

I knew 3 old yards like this in Houston , this back in the 90s when I was hunting for 1969 mustang parts . One was bugger reds near Tomball , some rare old stuff , found one tiger that should have been brought back , just rare stuff all over , It came down to the same demise as this yard . The oldest of the 3 was the old Hardy yard , it still had some 60s cars , located and pulled some much sought after Mach 1 seats , a true gem in the rough . Lastly was more of a ford collector , just muscle car gems , a 67 wrecked Shelby in some of the hoard , all past on and only the Hardy place I see put changed hands . Time marches on , the dessert areas if your looking for clean low rust starters is best .

Unfortunately I found out about the place at the tail end of the process and was already loaded that trip, so the clock had just run out. The place was 12 hours from home, so by the time I would have unloaded and returned it would have been too late.

This should serve as a wakeup call to those that have collection(s) in hand or in the family. Get a will properly filled out and filed with the jurisdiction you live in. Probate court is a pain! Research how to do one and get it signed and notarized. Let family and friends know you have one in place in case you no longer are able to due to loss of mental faculties.

Makes me sad and angry. Once this history is gone, it's gone forever. I agree that an auction should have been held. Some of these parts are impossible to find. Scrap steel prices are low. I see value in each piece shown well over the scrap price. Many of the cars looked rebuidable too. Going off to make toyotas I guess now. Hard to watch. That '56 Lincoln looked worthy of saving as did several others. A license plate collector would have had a field day in this place. Very few salvage yards still have a '59 Olds. Seen this type of crushing back in the mid 1980s in California bay area we had the biggest auto wrecking yards that went out of business by the environmentless seen and watching way cleaner car's and truck's being crushed even at the age of 15-16 year's old I was sad to see them being crushed my friend's and no one else cared they were just old car's to them. Now that everything is being produced by China and most of everything you see on the road these day's is a foreign car. Now everyone is taking interest in old American iron. If you can't have and old classic car you can ALWAYS build your own Bagattii or couch they way Americans used to do. There are people out there that still are building Kustom car's from scratch built.

For those decrying this as a shame, how would you actually inventory, let alone auction off a collection like this? It's miles from anywhere and how many interested bidders could you really attract and how many 1941 Chevys or 1950 Cadillacs are being restored right now anyway? Everything there would need to be forked onto flatbeds one car, one purchase at a time. Similar problem for pick-a-part sales, you'd have to man the whole area, deal with people pulling small parts off for pennies then eventually crushing the 99% of stock left anyway. Sad, but reality is that the scrapyard is the only option this family had.

Back when scrap peaked I had bought a good sized closed salvage yard out of an estate and I had several "car guys" come bid on some of the cars. I got some offers a bit over scrap but also the hassle of "do you have a title", and people not showing up when they say. I put out the word crusher coming in 10 days and it took 2 weeks to crush and stack for hauling and 8 more days to haul. Most times it just easier to send those old sleds to scrap than to deal with tire kickers.
