  • In the last few years, Tulum has risen to stardom as THE place to be for digital nomads and influencers. This is mostly due to the persona created around Tulum that you'll find on social media, but the reason for making today's video was to show you that Tulum IS NOT what you see on Instagram. In this Tulum Mexico vlog, we share; Tulum town, and the Tulum beach zone, and also talk about the top scams you need to be aware of before heading down to this region of Mexico.

Tulum was beautiful 10 years ago now it is a disaster !
Please be careful swimming in the cenotes tulum dumps all of its sewage directly into the underground river which feed the cenotes you can get sick from the bacteria. The sewage is also killing the reef.
I was there in January and the sargassum was bad then too and the smell was sickening.
I will never go back to Tulum everyone expects whats on instagram and its all bs. Thank you for sharing an honest video!

Hey Patricia 😊😊 I know Geovanny would 100% agree with you. When he played football in high school he went to Tulum every day and he always says to me how it was such a beautiful beach town. Oh yes, we have actually heard that from friends - its SO sad because all of these cenotes are connected underground throughout this region, so what they're doing in Tulum is going to have wide spread effects all across Quintana Roo ☠️🫣🙃 Wow, I'm sorry you had sargassum in January even - the sargassum season seems to be getting longer and longer every year. We don't blame you, there are much nicer places to visit in this region🙌 We're so glad you can relate to what we shared, we hope this video persuades a few people to avoid Tulum and rather go somewhere more authentic 🙏🙏

The sargassum happens anywhere along any coast from TX all the way to Florida. In fact it's happening there as of this moment. California does the same sewage dumping into the ocean also that contaminates the entire southern coast and parts of Baja California Mex. Its something the government in both countries need to fix.

This video was spot on. Thank you for sharing your time in Tulum so that others considering a visit for the first time will have a better understanding of the area. My first visit to QRoo was back in 1978 and no one in my area in SoCal really knew too much about it and Tulum was not much more than a rural area. I have been back to Tulum about 3 times in the last 10 years, with the last time being about 3 years ago, and unfortunately, the charming vibe that I absolutely loved and fell in love with is now gone for me. Everything is so overpriced, especially down by the beach and any nice area has now become a "beach club" with crazy prices for drinks and food. I kinda feel the same way about Playa del Carmen, no thanks!

Oh, well.. we are in Tulum right now. We've been to Quintana roo before, but in Cancun and Puerto Aventuras. I love PA! Tulum is meh...lots of dust, trash everywhere, sidewalks are broken, plastic bottles all over. Some roads are in a very bad condition, the worst I've ever seen in my life. And poverty. The locals live in self made huts, very poor. You see slums on one side of the road and luxury condos on the other. But they are behind high fences. We saw a few times people going through the trash next to our condo: a boy of about 8yo and a young woman with a baby. It's heartbreaking. They make it very hard to get to the beach for free, hard to find parking and the beach is full of sargassum ! The prices are pretty high everywhere, rotisserie chicken in Chedraui is like $8 ( $5 in Costco). A sponge at one pharmacy was like $7! In one week they tried to scam us twice: once at the gas station, the other one at the mango/coconut stand. And btw my husband is Mexican! They don't care. They see money - they try to scam you.

I lived in Tulum for 15 months in 2021 and 2022. I had a job there. The town itself is a disaster. Don't want to just simply sound negative but the facts are the facts: 1)everything is more expensive than Mexico City (where I live now): rent, food, restaurants and bars, taxis etc. 2)the town's infrastructure is broken, flooding streets everywhere with every rain, sewage volcanoes are a regular sight, intermittent power and internet outages. 3)crime is rampant with gangs of drug dealers often shooting at each other in public and/or extorting every other merchant from the street food vendors to hotel/restaurant managers. 4) banks are plagued by long lines constantly because there's just not enough branches/ATM's. If you want to have a better short vacation stay in Playa del Carmen, which is cleaner, cheaper and with better food options and if you want to explore the jungle, Mayan ruins and beaches just get a tour or rent a car

Ive read about huge volumes of waste water being dumped directly in to the cenote (underground river network) from the residential developments- i dont know if QRoo gvmt has implemented waste water treatment facilites, but for this reason alone and the destruction of jungle, I am not impressed. I love the locals and def want to see economics improve for them but hordes of foreigners (tourists or nomads moving there) destroying the eco system sucks tbh.

We do have some mixed feelings not only with Tulum if not with the entire region, but we totally understand what currently Tulum is going through, unfortunately, we're in a country where corruption/bribes are not so "uncommon" that makes new developments not going through the whole process and taking shortcuts without thinking on the environment or the social impact. The only way things will change is if people stop going all together. Why people insist on paying these extreme prices for mediocre food just for an IG setting is beyond me. The poor locals are being shut out due to the greed of their own country who is profiting heavily from these developers. I was seriously considering moving to either Tulum or PDC but after extensive research and watching endless videos similar to this one just reconfirms that even if I were to find affordable housing, I would still have to worry about extortion from the police, scammed by locals when shopping or eating at the restaurants. I wouldn't even feel comfortable renting a car after hearing about multiple so called traffic violation stops and being threatened with jail or taking the car before they steal whatever money you have. So disappointing!

Just returned from Tulum today & you are SO RIGHT! IT SUCKS!
The NEW sidewalks are HORRIBLY designed! A gravel middle vein AND a few grooved lines in cement AND triangular tree beds to twist your ankle let alone there's one sidewalk with a 10 foot cliff next to it with NO RAILING! Ironic its RIGHT next to the HOSPITAL! & there is trash EVERYWHERE! Even construction doesnt use containers! They just dump their building materials next to them and leave it! Worst than I've ever seem! Like they don't even try to :(
& the prices are CRAZY! You have stray dogs, extreme poverty blocks away and they sell burgers for 350pesos and tshirts for 1200pesos!!!
Then the beach... little chunks of beach with rocks and cliffs cutting each one so you CANT walk the beach, just sit there and pay hundreds if not a thousand pesos just to rent a beach chair!
    GO TO PLAYA DEL CARMEN
& we walked 1.5 HOURS to the beach from town on the west side of that park, expecting to hear tons of wildlife as the sun rose and NOTHING! NOT A PEEP from the 1hours walking next to this giant park... that looks likeits being destroyed to build expensive luxury condos that look ABANDONED HALFWAY BUILT!!
    Did Tulum go BUST?
Great videos, we also coincidently ate at the same local place and had the grilled chicken, amazing.
Evwr try the Jerk chicken at Ferrons? Best ever!

Pandemic caused hyper growth in Playa and Tulum for sure. I heard somewhere it was something like 1,000 Canadians a day moving down here at one point because their lockdowns were so bad and Mexico had no restrictions this also caused prices to go up much faster. PDC ain’t what it was 5+ years ago and Tulum is super expensive for what it offers. It’s like an Instagram setup paradise looks great for photos when in reality it’s only a silhouette of being complete

Undoubtedly, the pandemic has put Tulum on the map and its growth has been significant. However, Tulum, as well as PDC, are not what they used to be before. We really hope that they don't continue to destroy more of the beautiful nature that is in the region. Tourism has always been a part of the economy, but not at the cost of losing nature and culture.

Omg, I’ve been in Tulum for 24 hours and I’m already over it. First, I got a massage and the lady was super nice. She gave me a 90 min massage but only wanted to charge me the rate for 60mins ($70 USD) because thats what I asked her for before she started. At the end I got confused and paid her $90 USD because I miscounted my pesos and she gave me a startled look but still took the money. Once I left I realized I overpaid her and thats why she looked at me like that, yet she didnt even try to give me my change back.
I then took a taxi to the hotel strip and was charged $27 dollars 🤦🏻‍♀️ I had lunch and relaxed at a beach club for a bit and only paid $50 USD, not bad. After I thought I could walk the strip and check out the stores/take pictures.. nope. The road was so narrow and full or cars, vans, scooters it was dangerous. So I hopped in a taxi and asked him to take me to the money exchange place so I could take out money and then drop me off at the hotel. He said it would be $650 pesos so I said fine. We get there and find out there are no open atms so I couldn’t withdraw/exchange any cash. Taxi driver added more money to my tab for needing to stop at a 2nd atm and now wanted $682 pesos ($37 USD) for literally a 10 min drive. I tried to bargain with him to just take all the pesos I had left: $520, and he refused and told me he would leave me there even though I had no other cash to catch another taxi or rent a bike! Thankfully I speak Spanish so I was going back and forth with him and basically convinced him to take me to the hotel because we made a deal. Thankfully he agreed but asked if he could come back to my hotel tomorrow to get the $162 pesos I owe him! I was baffled. I took his phone number but Im probably not gonna call him. These locals take advantage on tourists with no mercy. In NYC i can easily bargain with a cab driver over a price. Here, this taxi driver was already overcharging me and then got upset when I was a few pesos short. It was ridiculous and I honestly will never come back to Tulum. Even thinking of ending my trip early. Its NOT worth it unless youre rich.

Thank you very much for your insight about your experience 🙏.
We have received plenty of comments similar to yours about Tulum, and we can only say that this place is 10000000% hyped by Socia Media, taxi drivers, and vendors are ridiculously pricing as if the place was NY, LA or any European city, and at this rate, tourism will be declining slowly to the point that they will become jobless due to their bad business practices. Thank you again for sharing this, we hope we can bring more awareness to more travelers that are interested in Tulum they might reconsider the "famous" beach zone because they are ripping tourists off. 😡

Glad I was able to visit in '93, and was able to take my wife to the ruins on our honeymoon 20 years ago. Back then were predicting that Tulum would take over as being the more quiet, inexpensive vacation spot once Playa grew to big.
I saw when looking at the map that they have a Boston Pizza now. I know Playa has one, but it's far from where I'll ever be. When I was a kid my parents pizza place competed with Boston Pizza, as it was a local Vancouver chain with it's 6th location in our nearby town. It's considered nothing special up here, I don't know how it managed to grow to be places like that.

I was in Tulum earlier this year and had a very mixed experience. We stayed in an area that was basically a construction site with constant noise and dust. Even having a scooter we found it really difficult to get to the beach zone with the state of the roads. And when we did reach the beach zone we spent fortunes of money on beach clubs, restaurants and drinks. Everything is over priced and an up sell it’s unreal. However we also had some great experiences one was a mezcal tasting with a local who then suggested an amazing restaurant that gave us all the beautiful authentic Tulum vibes with no crowds or influencers. Top tip- always connect with the locals!

So my wife and I visited the Yucatan peninsula in April and we also visited Tulum for one day. My recommendation is to stay in Playa del Carmen since it is cheaper. You can easily visit Tulum for a day by Collectivo. And for Tulum we rented a scooter which was really comfortable especially when there is traffic at the beach zone. We got a good deal at a scooter rental in Tulum Centro. I think if you are visiting the area for “luxury” travel vibes and are not on the budget than Tulum will probably be a nice place to spend 1-3 days. But if you are on a budget and you want to see more of the region itself than I d suggest a one day trip since its definitely enough to see everything (especially by motorcycle)
And you should 100% try Burrito Amor!!! Incredible food!

You said it right, it definitely is a tourist trap now 👀🤭 and probably the most expensive place in this entire region of Mexico 🤔 oh ya, we think the design of the hotels is stunning, but wouldn’t pay to stay in Tulum beach zone - no matter how beautiful the hotel is 🤔 thank you for watching Felipe ☺️

I've been to Tulum. Paid 100 dollars for a 10 minute ride. And the Tulum industry spent millions giving people free vacations and flights to Tulum resorts if they agreed to publicize it on social media and remember this area is basically a giant rainforest carved into a resort. Bali is by far the best place to visit in terms of that tropical atmosphere and overall vibe. Tulum and Cancun have turned into basically a Disneyland for Americans and that's bad news because this usually means trash and rude people and a very generic American vibe. And I'm saying this as an American. Rule of thumb. The places where you have the fewest number of tourists from America is usually the better places by far. also remember that theres been such a large growth of these resorts in Mexico because money laundering from drug money is a big deal in Mexico. There have to find a way to convert those dollars without much trace

      Hola Thompson 👋
Thank you very much for your insight 🙏. We feel that Tulum is unauthentic, and has lost its charm that it used to have. Myself (Geo) had the opportunity to basically living in Tulum over 1 year back in 2007 and it's sad to see what has changed for the bad, we really hope does not continue growing at this pace because in few years there will be not more areas for the locals 🤔🙏

Oh my gosh, when that taxi driver said US$30, one way we were shocked!!☠️ It only costs around US$50 to rent a car for a full day, so for them to charge as much as they do is just ridiculous 🫣 Haha, definitely the best paid taxi drivers in Mexico 🙃

      Hola M Porsche 👋
We do agree with you on you get what you pay for! Our only dislike with Tulum is that has changed so much when I was living there, I understand change is inevitable but most of Tulum authenticity has disappeared, but each to their own. There are some people who likes Tulum and there some other who does not really like it 100%. Thank you anyway for your comment, we love to read other people opinions and, this is the beauty of this world. Thanks for watching 😉

In Tulum you pay for what you get. At the beach you have gorgeous restaurants with worldwide known chefs, and it’s an experience. People who want to spend go to the beach and they receive top service. And the sand and water are clear. Taxis suck but you can always negotiate.

    • @ForTheRoadTravels
      @ForTheRoadTravels  9 месяцев назад

*We totally* agree with "you get what you paid", it's kind of nostalgic at least for me (Geo) that I grew up in the area and Tulum is nothing like it used to be before now. Still not our cup of tea, but there are some areas worth exploring in Tulum but the beach area at least not for us. Taxis everywhere in the state suck, we hope it can get regularized one day and stop taking advantage of tourists and locals. 🙏. Thanks for watching and commenting.
