- When Burt Bacharach and Hal David arrived on Broadway in 1968 with Promises, Promises, their invigorating pop sound was greeted with accolades. The great songwriting team, which had already produced dozens of hit songs that would go on to become standards - including The Look of Love, Walk On By and I Say a Little Prayer - reinvigorated musical theatre with an energizing score.
Burt Bacharach has had 47 top ten hits and nine #1 songs. He's the recipient of three Academy Awards and six Grammys, and is an inductee into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Promises, Promises ran for over 1200 performances, won two Tony Awards, and was the recipient of a Grammy Award.
Recent years have seen Bacharach and David enjoy a major renaissance and now their classic musical Promises, Promises is at last available again.'
None of the songs in this score sounded like Broadway songs. They were written by a pop team and they brought a fresh sound to the bitter sweet show, that was revolutionary at the time. It was a wonderful show - better by a mile on Broadway than anywhere else because of a perfect cast.
Jerry Orbach puts me in my happy place. I could listen to him all day.
Never realized how well Jerry Orbach sang. He was so talented. Thank God for Law and Order so we an see him all the time.
Wonderful. Nobody captures the sadness/wistfulness/optimism of this song nearly as well as Ms. O'Hara. The cracks in her voice only add to the characterization - and when Orbach comes in...lovely...
Yes!
What a treat to here a Brilliant interpretation of Hal David's lyrics just the guitar and the authentic Jerry Orbach and Jill O'Hara
These two are absolutely the best duet. Jerry was actually 12 years older than Jill but I think their dynamic is believable.
I love her: "After to do-hoo. You catch pneumonia."
So fine - best version of the song. Can't beat Jill O'Hara and Jerry Orbach.
Hard for me to picture Briscoe of Briscoe & Green from "Law & Order" as a song and dance man, but I knew from reading about him, that he was. I'm glad I ran across this video. Jerry certainly was full of talent!
Check out anything with him in a show called The Fantasticks. I feel in love with that for YEARS before I found out that El Guyo was in fact the same guy (Lenny Briscoe) who I loved on Law and Order.... The same guy who played the original Billy Flynn in Chicago. It's mind-blowing how great he was in everything he did. He put himself into every role to such an extent that people fell in love with him and can't believe that that guy was the same guy who did that other thing they love. The more I learn about Jerry Orbach, the more I'm simply amazed by the guy!!
WOW WOW WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From a 72yo Aussie fan.
I agree. Best version of the song. They sing from the heart.
I hAVE WATCHED Mr Orbach from the beginning lf Law & order watching a maranthon today and cldn't rememer when he passed so in looking I found the most amazing stories/music on broadway and at this pont still listening to his amazing voice . WONDERFUL WONDERFUL
so bitter-sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet......
Thanks for posting. I grew up with the Dionne Warwick rendition of this since the late 60's/early 70's. Finally discovered this original and so-sweet version about 5 years ago. Love the naive innocence, resolve and sincerity conveyed through O'Hara and Orbach's performances here. This bare-bones vocal and minimally post-produced recording accentuates a sense of "preciousness" rarely captured. Dionne's strings, jazzy piano and latin-tinged percussion version is lovely, but this wins my heart.
In character Jill and Jerry providing the most interesting and lyrical version recorded.
Oh, Jerry..... I've fallen in love with you.
Jerry Orbach, from Law &Order, singer? Wow!!!!
and very talented!
He was a big broadway musical star. Check out some of the videos on youtube. He was even the original Chicago in the 70s
He was like the Tom Hanks of Broadway before even coming to Law and Order. Many people love him for one performance not having a clue that he's that fantastic guy they love from another performance. That's exactly how it was for me. I loved El Guyo in The Fantasticks. I loved Billy Flynn from Chicago. I loved Lenny Briscoe from Law and Order without any clue it was always the same guy. Amazing!
RIP Hal David
@timothy19057 Agreed! What a distinctive quality to Jill's voice.
