Yes, the VN is the best way to experience the story of Steins;Gate. While the anime is good, it’s not cramming in every chunk of content in the VN in just 20+ episodes. Plus getting more insight is always nice as the VN is more detailed naturally. I just wished that people took this approach more after seeing the anime because a lot have decided to not. And because of that they are really hurting their experience with this phenomenal series.
Honestly, imo it's better, but the anime is still top-tier. Most of the skipped stuff is not completely necessary, though it's all really good (honestly, the fact that the bad endings serve a narrative function other than "here's another way the story could turn out" is one of my favourite things about Steins;Gate). Haven't read the manga, though.
Watched the show, took me reading the VN, reading the Linear Bounded Phenogram VN, reading Steins;Gate 0, and then watching the Steins;Gate 0 anime to finally feel ready to move on. ...to Chäos;Head
Episode one seemed to skip over a lot, but it did reference the stuff it skipped over and they just said that the events happened. It seems they just say what happened instead of showing it for those scenes. It made me feel like I missed an episode or a scene lol
Honestly the anime is better because of the added cinematography and framing they added. While the detail is nice in the vn it can many times feel like a drag just having to experience the extra stuff. I think many people dont say it drags purely because they brush it over and dont think about what the scene does for the main story rather than being filler.
Steins gate elite does a bit of both where it's the VN minus a bunch of scenes (probably from saving price) plus they use scenes from the anime or add their own scenes. Only downside is that some scenes that get removed makes scenes later a bit confusing (I think I remembered they also did another character dirty but not as bad as the anime)
to be honest i think the anime is better than the vn for a few reasons: 1. as much as i love okabe, in the vn he can be very dense. when you can here everything he thinks, yes a lot of times it adds to his character, but it ruins it by having him have stupid and irrational thoughts sometimes. the anime not only cuts out those thoughts, it somehow shows exactly what okabe is thinking on his face. i watched the anime first, but i always knew exactly what he was thinking or feeling. 2. while a lot of the extra scenes/endings in the vn are extremely good most of them feel unfinished, meaning they leave more questions than answers. for example: what stopped WW3 in the mayuri's ending or what happened after suzuha's ending. so yes they are interesting, but they are flawed. they are good in terms of giving you more story, but they don't necessary make the main plot any better. 3. while i really like the vn's art stile, seeing everything happen in animation is just more immersive. 4. the sound track has a lot more music, which is good because repeating a music can make the scenes less special. 5. this one might be because i played the vn after i watched the anime, but i feel like many of the plot twist are much more obvius in the vn. a great example for that was suzuha being john titor. while it was still not impossible to predict in the anime, in the vn it's blindly obvius. and i actually didn't play the vn, i watched someone else play it on youtube, and he could guess half the plot twist no problem, which is near impossible to do in the anime. 6. the dub. i love both japanese and english voices for steins gate, but i know for a fact that the dub can make the experience a lot better for a lot of people. the thing is that, the dub and sub of steins gate feel completely different. the sub okabe and dub okabe feel like two different characters. so having the option can be a positive for a lot of people. oh all these aside, i still haven't read the 0 vn but the anime was really good, it just felt incomplete just like the original vns other endings. which is a flaw don't get me wrong. but it did live up to the original in a lot of ways, and it had a few 10/10 episodes (8,16,21,22,23) and one of the best endings i have ever seen.
Interesting points! I disagree on a few of them but I can definitely see where you're coming from! Highly recommend reading the Steins; Gate 0 VN if you get the chance! Especially if you don't like some of Okabe's characterization in the original VN, he is a vastly different character in Zero (as you know if you've seen the anime) and you get to see the story from other character's point of view.
@@NoahsArchive357 i wanted to play it but my playstation 4 broke a few months back :( i had even bought the game! So i decided to buy a ps5 for replacment, and you most likely can guess how that has been going.
@@dariusonly1384 i said it CAN be a positive for a lot of people. just because you in specific are not a part of that "can" part, it doesn't mean my point is untrue. you can hate it, but there are a huge amount of people that love it, so it still stands as a positive to have the option. it's not like the anime is dub only you can still watch it in the Japanese version, even if you hate the dub for some reason, an extra option is still not a bad thing.
Im going with the stein gates OG VN blind I like the art style much more they kinda ruin it in 0 imo. Wait it's not that but I know the VN was rehashed iirc correct me if im wrong there are some difference?
I don't know mate i feel steins;gate 0 anime is better than VN. I have finished them both though. VN done the reason for change worldline is so vague, while i thought the animation is done neatly can conclude everything in one worldline. So if i have to recommend someone to steins;gate 0 i will recommend anime version.
Thank you for the comment! And that's a fair point! I do think the vn's reason for worldline change is vague, and in that sense the anime definitely has it beat, but I think the pacing of the anime is too inconsistent for me. I think this is a result of having to cram multiple vastly different story routes into one cohesive narrative as opposed to the original Steins; Gate VN with a much more linear story, with multiple endings that are simply reached by not sending a d-mail but can be completely skipped in favor of the true route/ending. With the multiple different routes, you can find out different information in their own self-contained story routes, and that led to a more satsifying true route/ending that did not have to over-explain everything. The anime, to me at least, felt like it was jumping around constantly in tone and pacing, and it felt very disjointed to me (again, I just think this is because of the awkward nature of fitting all the very different story routes into one story path). That being said, the 0 anime still has some outstanding episodes and it's ending scene is absolutely legendary. I could see why you prefer the anime, one single story to tell everything, but I personally prefer the VN. I'm willing to overlook the bizarre worldline changes because I think it allows for better-paced storytelling.
I agree, I don't think the VN for 0 makes complete sense as a story. Even when you get to the good ending there's a lack of clear cause-to-effect - something which the original Steins;Gate had worked out for pretty much every plot point. Spoilers follow: Also, how the hell does Leskinen die in one ending but survive the others? And how does Kagari die in some but survive to the ending? Isn't the entire issue with Attractor Fields that people's deaths are set (unless they decieve the world, I gues)? Having characters survive individual worldlines within the Attractor Field not only undermines the entire plot (suggesting that there is a possibility for saving Kurisu without doing anything as hard as 'deceiving the world') but also undermines the entire plot of the first Steins;Gate. ...on the other hand, the anime had Kagari sometimes die and sometimes not too, so I guess this is just a general Steins;Gate 0 complaint. Anime doesn't have the Fake Yuki=Kagari nonsense, though, so that's a plus.
Hi! So the original Steins; Gate visual novel you can get on Steam, or if physcial PC games are more your thing, I believe Rightstuff Anime has the physical PC disc for sale. For PS4, Switch, and Steam, you can get Steins; Gate ELITE which also comes with bonus content depending which system you get it for, but I recommend getting the original visual novel. Steins; Gate uses the anime for its artwork, and while it's not bad, I think the unique artstyle of the original visual novel is much better-looking than Elite's (also they cut story content out in Elite which I am not a fan of). After playing the original visual novel, you can also play Steins; Gate 0 which is avaible on Steam, PS4, and Switch. There's also a spin-off romance focused Steins; Gate visual novel avaible on PS4, Steam, and Switch as well.
