- These baked onions make a great side dish. The extended baking time caramelizes them beautifully and they get super sweet!
3 lbs of sweet onions
2 1/2 cups (more or less) of cheese - I used 1 cup cheddar, 1 cup mozza and 1/2 cup parmesan.
Spice mix - I used 1 tsp garlic salt, 1 tsp black pepper, 1 tsp paprika, 1 tsp thyme.
1/2 cup butter cut into small pieces.
Slice up the onions into thick slices and separate the rings.
Place onions in a 9x13" baking dish ( I greased mine prior).
Sprinkle with spices, dot with butter pats, sprinkle on cheeses.
Cover with foil (grease foil so that it doesn't stick to cheese) and bake at 350F for 40 minutes.
Remove foil and increase temp. to 425 F, continue to bake until onions are soft and top is browned and edges are crispy. I added an additional 1/2 cup cheddar in the last 10-15 minutes of cooking time (this is optional).

After making a point to mention that we don't have non-stick foil here, I found it in my grocery store today! lol. It is a lot more pricey than the regular one though.
Ooh, this would be a great way to use up older onions too. Thanks for the recipe!
Yes, if you have some onions that are starting to sprout, it would be a great recipe to use them up for sure. Thanks for watching
I bet that these onions could be found in southern themed restaurants across the globe. And, that’s totally great how you managed to find these onions, despite you living in Canada, and you actually used American onions for this dish!
I've travelled a bit in some Southern USA states and I've never seen them, but they sure will be made again in my house :)
Three types of cheese- I’m in!!!
Never too much bacon, cheese or chocolate....
I'm not drooling. We would definitely love this in my house.
Thanks for watching Patti :)
Neat! I'd be tempted to pu some slices of baguette on the bottom to soak up the melted butter and "cheese juice".
I think that serving it with some bread for dipping on the side would also be awesome.
Ooh thats so yummy
Thanks!
Oh that is Onion and Cheese paradise. How delicious. Never thought about an onion bake- why not. A new idea and definitely something I'd like to make. 👌🩷🙋♀🇳🇿🥝
Thanks for watching!
Maybe combining breadcrumbs with the spices would help soak up the excess butter and add a yummy crunch to the finished dish.
Love this idea!
It think it would be worth a try :)
So so nice and looks perfect. You have so many good things here on your channel.
Thank you Michael :)
Scalloped onions! LOL i am going to try this one.
Almost scalloped onions....lol. It think you will like them.
Amezing 👍👍👍👍
Thanks :)
Looks delicious and I’d cut the butter in half and spray with butter flavored nonstick spray. I’ve been on an onion kick this past month that is something fierce so this recipe is right on time! 😍
Did you try it? I'm curious. thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.
@@yoyomax12 Hi 👋🏾! Yes I tried it with my family. I switched a few things up but I’ve made it a couple more times since. It hits the spot for my onion obsessed soul!! I wanted to get the resemblance of French onion soup so I used havarti and parmesan cheeses and half the butter. It is so good and it seems better the next day. Thank you so much for your recipes, love from a longtime supporter in Chicago 🥰
Ohhh DELICIOUS!!! Im gunna save this! :D
This is definitely a side dish I will make again. Thanks for watching.
I love onions.
This is a side dish for you for sure :)
Looks delicious 😋 Unfortunately onions don’t like me. I love them, just can’t eat them 😢
Thanks for watching and commenting anyway :)
Looks yummyyyy - I wonder if you use stock instead of butter to cook the onions in and then had like a breadcrumb + less butter topping on top it would be healthier/less oily?
I think.... you'll end up with onion slices boiled in stock, topped /w/ soggy bread crumbs.....
@@raallen1468right? Did they forget they’re in the ‘diet free zone’? 😂
I think you could safely reduce the amount of butter in this for sure and they would still taste very good.
I threw in some worchestershire sauce with the onions
Great addition :)
This would be too good, I have made something similar but with red and yellow capsicum.
I think this would be very good with bell peppers :)
@@yoyomax12 oh, it is. We made chicken in the same oven.
