Joshua 9 explained. After the Gibeonites had deceived Israel, they finally confessed why they did it - it was because of fear of their lives and fear that they will be wiped out by the powerful Israel army after hearing what God had told Moses.
Nevertheless, God had never commanded Joshua nor the leaders of Israel to make a pact or an oath with the Gibeonites regardless of any circumstance.

This is practical wisdom. We need to be careful to consult wisely and to pray, even in repentance, when certain people want us to make a commitment to something that is not in our best interests. Be sober and alert, sin blinds, weakens and kills.
