Between the rise in the cost of living and finding good healthcare, many people are saying good bye. This video I’m talking about the ten reasons why you shouldn’t move to Florida.
If you have seen the news over the past several months to a year, it’s been reported that Florida is not the favored destination anymore and in fact many who have moved there are moving out. These 10 reasons I want to talk about are mostly financial related. Look many are looking for affordable places ot move to and Florida was always a top destination. So what’s happened in recent years to Florida? A lot.

You were doing ok with your video until you got to the "must have a pool in Florida". That's nonsense. What's required as must have for Florida is air conditioning not a pool. Just common sense.

If she really wanted to tell people why not to move here let's start with that, then the drugs, with follows with the crime, then the heat, northerners can't handle it and have heat strokes, the sun being 2 inches away, the snakes that can eat someone, also the Poisonous one too, the mosquitoes that come in droves, lovebugs that destroy paint on the car, traffic so bad it's impossible to drive anywhere any more.
Or just show the people from the Walmart to them might work just as well. 😂

I live in Tampa and leaving back to NYC in a few days. House prices thru the roof, traffic is insane, tolls on pretty much every highway and no money here. Just let my home go, was 3,600 a month and can't leave fast enough. This woman is a gift to us all in calling all this out if you do not live here..All the best

Wait until you move back to NYC, even more expensive! Now they have congestion prices on tolls and transportation there. Rents are thru the roof.
@@tropicgallo Depending on where you live, you dont need a car. Congestion pricing is only if you drive downtown, and no one in their right mind ever does except for elite city workers who get parking permits.

I’ve live here in Florida since 1973 and have seen many, many people move here thinking it’s a paradise and living on permanent vacation. If you’re moving here and want to live like you’re on vacation you better have a whole lot of money, I’m talking millionaire money.
I live in Florida but am from New England. I stayed in St. Louis for about 6 months.

I'm from New England but tried southern FL; only lasted 3 years -- the humidity, red lights, homeless, beggars, bugs, clouds, rain, floods, and did I mention the humidity?

I lived in Sunny Isles Beach, Miami Dade, for 9 years, sold my condo and moved back to NJ 8 yrs ago to be close to family. Was regretful about leaving Florida and now counting my blessings! 😌

I maintain a residence in Florida (Naples) and South Jersey. Best of both worlds--I even feel like the New Jersey mosquitos followed me! Florida does have more bug diversity though.

I was busy today and didn’t eat so me and my dog went to Burger King. It’s late Sunday night no cars in the parking lot. It was like an airport and a red van comes to my car! And I’m like wtf? 🤬 another Freskin Floridian! And the old 80 ish guy is in his van with his wife and he’s too close to my car so I’m getting mad. He’s waving his hands as he talks to his wife and I am like what is the problem?!
So I open my door and my car was in the shade next to a patch of grass and that’s where we park. So I let my little dog out and I look at the old folks and wave him off away from my car and I started to walk over so he backs up fast then with an airport parking lot area this old guy pulls his car close to me on my passenger side! I’m like omg really dude? You have a freaking airport and you are going to sit there and harass me?? I said forget it and I moved close to the stores (he could have had a gun) so I parked near stores and a patch of grass so my dog could run around. Then I looked for the red van but my view was blocked. I drove to see if they left or not. NO!! They didn’t arrogant Bas turds!! He almost hit me! Then we left the area.
Like s lawyer asked me once how many people do you think it takes for a lawyer to get some business? I was like 🤷🏻♀️ 100? 200? He said no, not even close! He said the answer is two . Two people in the town and that’s what I experienced with the guy in the red van. I thought he was going to crash into me and call police and say I hit him. Oh Gawd!!! When is it going to end!!! The government needs to cut off all the surgeries 70 & 80 ppl get! They need to Git!!! They have the money to buy spare body parts to live to 100.!! And I think that is living too long and they are a burden on society.
But don’t anyone tell me the Boomers/Vietnam Vets deserve that but they do need to put a cap on surgeries that cost upwards of $100,000 dollars. US VIETNAM VETS DO NOT DESERVE TO BE TREATED LIKE CRSP!
As a 60 yr old, I have lived in fl for the last 10 years, and I’m leaving. Tennessee mountains are looking way better than the overstuffed Florida sand dunes.

Beautiful I got on mine too I was on Texas then I moved here my Pap's die year later then things change a lot to me I work outside I'm having a lot of problems with heat and the sun it's way to strong here too way different than Texas I'm moving too soon as I can it's really expensive here not buying a house here

Not a Floridian. I live in South Carolina. We have alot of new people moving here from Florida that are called 'half backs' because many have moved to FL from the Northeast. Then moved half way back to the North East. So end up here. The stories Ive heard about the changes in the cost of living in FL gives me shivers...
Not to mention the heat and humidity!
I moved from the Chicago area to Florida in 2013 because I had some family here, but after investigating where I would be more happy to live, I decided to retire to the Greenville, SC metro area. Florida has too many unsolvable problems.
I watched a youtuber in alaska showing the food costs in the outskirts where it has to be planed and ours in Fl was more expensive 🤔 how is that possible

I left Ft. Lauderdale. Traffic, bad drivers, poorly built housing, rich/entitled people, crime, drunk college kids, poor transportation, heat, humidity, etc. Living there is not like vacationing there.
I was in South Florida last Christmas. Actually the calm before the storm as snowbirds are not there yet. Nonetheless, it is so overcrowded

Tampa. Crowded everywhere. Humidity like a jungle. People think they can almost walk to the beaches. Absolutely not. Plus all of the financial report you just heard. All true.
As an RN who trained in New England, I can honestly say the healthcare in Florida is mediocre. “Operation Nightingale” conducted by the FBI found that over 7600 Florida nursing degrees were bought. How does this happen? Lack of state Board of Nursing oversight.
Nurses are corrupt. They know who is bad, and they allow it.
I’m 20 years old. I have lived in Florida my entire life. It is absolute *TORTURE* to live here. I literally live in a one-bedroom apartment with roommates and my mom and I’m the only one without a door. I can’t wait for the day when I get to leave Florida forever and move somewhere that's easier and feels more like home.
PS: I’ve been telling everybody that Florida is just a resort for rich people. It's so expensive here that even the locals have left.
It has definitely become hard to live here if you actually are still working and not a rich retiree, that is for sure. I often say to people, a lot of the money in Florida was not MADE in Florida.

the red state paradise myth of more freedom and prosperity that was pushed during the covid shutdowns . the only time florida and texas saw such a large population increase in such a small amount of time was during the covid shutdowns . the paranoia and propaganda and hysteria about the blue states never stopping the shutdowns caused many people living in blue states to freak out and move out . but now that the shutdowns are over and dont look likely to ever happen again in our lifetime , people who moved to florida and texas are now remembering why they never wanted to live in florida or texas in the first place , and they are now leaving .

I moved to south Florida 21 years ago. Absolutely love Florida. However, with the increase in population, cost of living, and the diminished quality of life I am moving out of Florida this month. I recently retired and can no longer justify all of the negatives living in this beautiful state.

@@rohitnijhawan5281 Sales tax is 8% in some areas of Florida, the cost of living is out pacing stagnant wages and salaries in Florida, and the climate necessitates a level of property maintenance and insurance coverage that far exceeds the expense of a state tax! I've had to reside in Florida for over 20 years. Florida is by no means an inexpensive place to live! The wealth disparity is glaring!

That isn't the case for everyone. Do you have any idea how badly the heavy snow and brine solutions on the road impact properties and vehicles in upstate NY and vermont?
Took a trip down there recently. All the development has made the state look ugly. My idealized vision of Florida is more like an episode of flipper. I feel that all the chain restaurants and tackiness makes it look like a dystopian nightmare with palm trees.
My saying is it's mostly concrete & billboards with some beaches thrown in.
So it looks like the rest of the country, but with flat land and palm trees! ;)

Jackie, I’ve lived in Florida for 35 years. It was very reasonable until the pandemic. I lived in Boynton Beach and moved to the treasure Coast because during the pandemic Boynton Beach got very crowded. I moved to the treasure Coast in 2021. It was wonderful Until you figure out the cost. With my Florida homestead exemption I pay $8000 a year in taxes as far as insurance goes I pay close to $3000 a year for one car as far as homeowners and my house is a brand new house with hurricane proof everything and I pay close to $2000 a year people move to Florida blind they don’t realize how expensive it really is. For what I pay in taxes and insurance, I can live up north anywhere in the country. Florida is so crowded and so hot today was 96° folks think about it before you make the move.
Prices really started to go up around 2015. I got my house that year right before it started going crazy again.
Now the prices are astronomical. Rent and purchasing a home.
The deal breaker for me is you put something in an outdoor shed and it molds and gets roaches the humidity, no thanks

100%, I'm a 59 yo FL native. I hate it here now. so much traffic, high costs and summers a long and brutal. Can't wait to leave.

I have lived in Florida for 40 years from New Jersey. All these people liked the fact that Florida never shut down that long during the pandemic, and they moved here in droves, paying cash for homes and paying over the asking price. This raised home and apartment prices for everyone. I know people who had their rent raised by 600 and 700 dollars a month. I have had students living out of motels, or homeless. I live in the Tampa Bay area and it's a Concrete jungle. Every bit of land is getting built on, and traffic is beyond ridiculous. Tampa just got voted the worst place to drive in the United States. I have roots here, so I'll be here for a while, but I'm glad people are moving out.

Tampa was also voted best city for younger families in the US. It's trendy that's why.
I moved to Clearwater from Omaha NE back in 2001. Purchased my home in 2004. I was 37 when I moved. I remember people telling me when I was apartment hunting, "Don't move here. The salaries are so low". Well thats O.K. I had Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) where the sun affects my mood tremendously and I was willing to sacrifice a lower salary to feel much better living in sunshine. Its now 23 years later and I'm so glad I didn't get discouraged and took the leap to move.

Lifelong Floridian here. Pools are so expensive. In 2009 it was only $55 weekly to maintain a pool.
Bottom line: don’t move to Florida. It’s poised to be hit by multiple hurricanes over the next decade. Do you really want to put yourself in that situation? Are the beaches really worth it? Not anymore they aren’t.

I currently live in Florida, and have for the past 8 years. We are moving out this month. Everyone one of these reasons are among the reasons we are leaving. We have had enough. It has gotten very expensive. And there is a lot of fishy fraudulent businesses.
Traffic is so bad in much of Florida you can't really go anywhere new because it's hours of gridlock in all directions...you are stuck in a world of your house and the local Publix. No such thing as a Sunday drive in Florida these days. Can't wait to get out of here.

Florida's main appeal was it's affordability. That's no longer a thing. Florida was hyped even AI pics on social media of beaches. Everyone was hearing about x amount of people were moving here daily, therefore people think it's the place to be, then reality sets in......
That's a result of more demand...higher prices. I was able to move in to one of those beachfront-facing skyscrapers. It was already expensive to begin with, but now, I can't afford if I were to buy at current prices. The beauty of these skyscrapers is that only 1/4 are occupied with 3/4 unoccupied/living elsewhere and using it only on winter.

Florida has become incredibly overcrowded since the 1990s. I have gone there twice on vacation and I will not return. The traffic and bugs are atrocious and the heat is unbearable. There are too many homes packed into a small area because there are so many wetlands.

You must hate golfing, going to the beach, eating at fine restaurants on the water. There is something to do all the time, and it may be hot, but I still do everything when I was up North I didn't do anything all winter except shovel snow and freeze.
My brother recently moved away from Daytona Beach, Florida, after living there for 30 years. He was drawn to Florida originally because he's very into boating, sailing, fishing. He would often sail to the Bahamas, for example. So, Florida is great if that's what you're into. But he finally got tired of (1) home repairs after hurricanes, which happen on a regular basis, (2) the constant hot and humid weather, (3) the constant annoyance of flying insects such as gnats and midges. You pretty much have to install a screen around your swimming pool to enjoy it.
So, after many years on the water, he retired to a ranch in southern Colorado. He doesn't get to boat anymore. I guess he got all of that out of his system over 30 years. But he solved the aforementioned problems and is very happy there.
Moved here 12 years ago (Clearwater) , love it. Bought my home for $250k its now worth $550k. My taxes are way less than what I was paying in Bucks County Pa near Philadelphia. My wife and I are in our fiftys both still working and will be able to retire early comfortably. Don't need a pool I live 10 minutes from Clearwater beach.
Hey, grew up in Florida. 1. Its way more expensive in South Florida, where I live. 2. Not everyone has a pool, but a lot of people do. 3. The home insurance is going up like crazy and a lot of people are forgoing insurance to just have a savings account. 4. In general I agree with most of what youre saying. People keep moving here. And i have met a lot of those people who are working remotely from states who pay them more than most Florida companies do. Housing has just kept going up and a lot of the people who have grown up here are having to move away. Myself included.

Agree. I moved their one year ago. I really wanted to buy a home. I couldn't even rent a home. It was so expensive. Wages for RNs were super low. I'm from calif. I lasted a year in a black mold apt and ran

I've been here going on 7 years now. Widowed and my entire family's here and I feel stuck because of that. Good points, it's visually beautiful and normally sunny. I do love my pool because I actually use it for exercise but I have noticed that most neighbors never get in theirs. Now for the bad. A lot of mighty strange bugs here and snakes and rats no matter how clean you are. Extreme humidity and hideously hot summers. Driving is not the carefree pleasure it once was due, in my opinion, to over growth and overly aggressive drivers. There seems to be more gauging when it comes to home repairs so I always get 3 estimates and the spread between them is big. Salaries aren't keeping up with the cost of living and yes it is expensive here.
Good for you, I’ve said to people the grass isn’t greener on the other side in Florida. In many instances it’s worst. Wages in California are way higher than wages in Florida. Rather than moving to Florida People should make their own state work for them.

@@fg3901 crime isn’t outrageous at all. We lived in Minnnesota before in a supposedly good suburb in the $650k range and the crime in the area made us leave it. A lot of stealing going on. We moved to Orlando florida area and there has absolutely no crime whatsoever. The people are superb and real friendly not that fake 2 faced “Minnesota nice” we experience up north.
There is a reason why a lot of people move to Florida. And hardly anybody wants to move to the mid west unless they are forced there with taking a job but don’t really want to move to areas like Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois. We only managed to live in Illinois because the people were worse.
Florida is absolutely wonderful.

Florida has the best beaches in the country(as per TripAdvisor), no air or water pollution, green all year round, no droughts or fires like in California, no State Income Tax, low gas prices, a warm and beautiful ocean all year round
Jackie, You have made a lot of legitimate points. I agree with all of them. I moved from San Diego CA to Orlando FL. I am still saving a TON of money. No more 12.3% state income tax, gas (even though 2 of 3 cars are EV) is $2 per gallon cheaper, insurance is 2.3 times higher for auto, double for home owners. HOA fee (in a house) is the same. House is brand new (2023 build) at $450k vs (1993 build) sold for $925k. Groceries are 1/3 cheaper in FL. Power is 0.13cent per KW (flat rate) VS (time of day rates varied in CA) average of .35 cents per KW. My bill is $150 per month in FL vs $300 without solar, $120 with solar plus solar bill of $65 = $185. Water is about the same price $120-150 per month, only because I use irrigation and garbage is included on the bill here in FL. No irrigation in CA. Overall, with a cheaper and bigger home, cheaper cost of living, I am saving $50,400 per year in FL.
But the wages are not the same as CA if you have a professional job.
Moved to Florida 4 yrs. ago and house prices have gone from 200,000 to 400,000 on up! We paid cash I can’t imagine having a mortgage on top of everything else!! But we do love it here!
Wait until tne next big one hits and thrn you can revisit your move.

you are part of the problem.
I don't mean this in a negative way but its people like you that have caused that 200 to 400 and up jump in recent years. Its supply and demand at its finest. Florida was "cheap" for out-of-staters and "reasonable" for those who were already here and had been here for many many years. When massive droves of people pickup and move, the market becomes flooded with buyers so builders have to raise their prices to meet the demand that is brought on by all these "cash" buyers.
@@hewitc Every year is "predicted" to be one of the worst. I'll take risk of hurricane any day of the week over risk of earthquake out west or risk of tornado in much of the central US, you know, two things that you get no advanced warning of and have no time to prepare for like you do with a hurricane.
Also, you do know 2023 only beat 2014 by 0.15°C... yes, less than 2/10ths of a degree. You also know that that is only hottest on "human recorded global annual average" history which only stems back to the 1850's right? You do also know that there has be periods of time shown by geological record that global annual average temps have reached several degree's higher than they are today, Right?
I moved to St Petersburg in 1996 - Moved to Tennessee in March 2024- Sold my $70,000 house for $400,000 - cost of living in FL has become crazy. So very crowded with some of the rudest individuals ever.

I agree, I lived in FL for 20 years and had to move out because the cost of living went through the roof. On top of that there are so many cars that traffic is awful. Im much happier now that I don’t live there.
Try traffic in Atlanta, Boston, NYC, Chicago, LA...
For some North Easterners, much of the Florida appeal is to escape the big government mentality of their home state: the controlling laws, over taxation, wasteful spending and refusal to abandon policies that don't work. Once they move, it can be difficult to adjust to the climate, new surroundings, and a different way of doing things. They often forget about what drove them out and freedom seems a bit less important as homesickness takes over.

1. Increasingly in Florida you can't go to the beaches anymore because there are red tides and other hazardous water conditions on both coasts.
2. The insurance thing is *no joke*. Even if you live in a condo. I've seen where your insurance payment looks like a mortgage payment.
3. If the house was built before the mid 2000s, when there were a lot of hurricanes and they realized the building codes needed to be improved, the houses weren't built very well considering hurricanes were a real risk. Also, with the pace of building and the demand for big cheap houses, the builders might have cut corners. My sister's entire subdivision had to replace their “hundred year" tile roofs after 20 years because they weren't done right.
4. AFAIK K-12 education isn't great.
5. It's bleeping hot, all the time. There are no seasons.
6. Unless all you like doing is going to the beach (see item 1 though), fishing, or other water based activities there's not a ton of outdoor stuff to do... Maybe golf I guess 🤷🏾♂️. And it's flat everywhere.
7. You have to drive everywhere and everything is far.
8. Except for Miami, Destin, or maybe fort Lauderdale, a lot of the state has diddly for nightlife. When she talked about the old people, it's fricken real. I been to Sarasota and by like 9 pm it's dead. Even with the tourists, people come with their families, they're active in the day and by 830, they're heading home. If you like concerts, clubs, going to the theater... Nada. Same for tasty varied food. If you're in Dade and Broward you've got the United Nations of food, everywhere else it's a fried seafood platter.
Some places do have rolling hills and north Florida has two season but the rest I pretty much agree with. Also no one wants to talk about the cockroaches with a body the size of a grown man's thumb. Unless you live in a big city there is nothing really to do and if you live in a big city you probably can't afford it because rent is so much.
Plus, your condo building may collapse. We saw that on the news.

My parents lived in Key West for 25 years, great food and nightlife. They got tired of the hurricanes so they moved to NC where the rest of the family lives (except me).
Plus the politics, the banning of books and women's health care.

We are native Floridians, born and raised in central Florida. A lot of what was brought out in the video is correct. However, we have lived in three other states other than Florida, and each one has its pros and cons. You have to decide what is most important to you in terms of the advantages and disadvantages that are present in each state. One of the disadvantages of living in Florida is that too many people live here! I know that lots of folks are leaving, too, but not enough in our opinion. So, where to move to is going to be a very personal decision. Good luck and best wishes to all who are in the position of trying to decide where to make your nest!

It's a well known fact that Florida is one of the worst, if not the worst states to be a bedside nurse. Wages are awful and ratios are unsafe. It's very well known among nurses. Many hospitals are owned by private equity and they consider nurses their largest "cost" so they cut them as much as they possibly can. In many places, the only nurses they can hire are new graduates who have no experience. They bolt as soon as they can get a better offer. Beware what hospital you go to in Florida.
Unfortunately, this can be said about most states too, but stories coming out of Florida are bad.

Yes. This is one of the biggest problems in FL. And it’s always been the case. Good paying jobs in most of the country are closer to minimum wage in FL. This is why FL was able to maintain a reasonable population over the last 50 years. People could buy a home there, but could not LIVE there. I don’t know how long work from home will continue but I know of a MAJOR tech company that is phasing their good wage earning jobs back into the office. And once one does it……I think this will crash the FL housing market because what will all of those people do? Get a good new job in FL? Ha.
We have a health care crisis across the country. Assisted living and nursing care are ridiculously overpriced, and can't even provide much of the basic care needs. Since nurses were so overworked and told they had to get The Vaccine or get fired, they dropped out of that workforce, in droves. It's really scary and disheartening that our country isn't addressing this crisis. Nurses and other health workers need to be a priority.
I regret moving to FL on 2018, i can not wait to get the heck out of here, traffic, heat, humidity, HOA, insurance, insurance hike. The worse medical system in the world, it took us a year to find a Dr.

Me too. I lived in Tampa in the 80's and also released back then, that it was heading downhill. I got out and never looked back.
Many have lost their charm, due to the high growth, for sure. I love visiting there for a week at a time, but can't see living there.

I lived in Southwest Florida for nearly 35 years and I'm now in northeast Florida, been all over FL since 1975... one thing that cannot be over emphasized, especially with Southwest Florida, is how incredibly, incredibly, incredibly hot and humid it is. It never goes away, just unrelenting, there's only two weeks somewhere with December/January that you're going to get a few of cool days. Everything south of Central FL is unbearable with the Atlantic side being slightly less humid. NE you do get south Georgia weather and it is a big difference.

I have lived in Florida since 1967. It has really changed a lot. I moved to North Florida a long time ago. I did not pay much for my house i bought it 40 years ago. A couple of years ago my home owners insurance company went bankrupt. To get insurance i spent $40,000 on repair s to my house. I have still have friends in South Florida i drive down about once a year. The traffic is terrible from Jacksonville on down its bumper to bumper on a six lane highway with people trying to drive 55 . If there is wreck you can add an hour to your drive time. I spent a month after Hurricane Michael running a chainsaw helping people get in and out of their homes. If you move here make sure you buy a generator and a chain saw you will need them during hurricane season.
I was born and raised in Miami-Dade County. Never imagined I would leave Florida but 6 months ago, my family and I bought a home in the Northern Atlanta area and moved 600 miles away. When I first decided to move, I thought I might be homesick but that has not been the case. Excluding my family and friends still living there, I don't miss anything about Florida.
The biggest thing for me was the unbearable heat. It gets worse every year with minimal relief for more than a few sporadic days during the "winter" months. This makes it nearly impossible to enjoy outdoor activities other than anything involving a pool or the ocean. Add to that a near-constant stream of rage-inducing traffic (regardless of day, time, or area), insanely overpriced property insurance rates (that are essentially a scam because you have to pay but better not make a claim), high property taxes, high cost of living as a whole, and perpetual exposure to fraud and other criminal elements. As a kid and young adult, I loved my hometown. But now I realize that sadly my hometown is no longer what it once was. The place's beauty and potential have been slowly eroded by greed and corruption.
In our new neighborhood, all the beautiful, unique homes have room to spread out so neighbors are not on top of each other. Traffic and crime are minimal, woodlands are bountiful, and it is a blessing to enjoy real seasons without any one of them overstaying their welcome. Property and insurance rates are affordable. My base salary as a teacher increased by more than $20k. Life is easier and happier here for me and my family. I will always have love for Florida because I spent 46 years of my life there and it helped shape me into the person I am today. I will return often to visit my loved ones and maybe the beach when I need some vitamin sea, but I am much happier having Florida be a place I visit rather than a place I call home.
That unbearable heat, and the humidity, is why I could never live in Fla. Plus the freakin' bugs, no thanks!
My parents paid $6,000 for our 1930's frame home in the late 60;s, which is still standing. The monthly mortgage payment was $60!
But these current home prices are just like it was in California in 2007 just before the bust brought them all back down to reality.
What hurt a lot of people was using those unrealistic, artificially pumped up prices to go out and buy trucks, boats and other things they still had to pay for when it tanked!
Been here since 2012... the amount of traffic these past 2-3 years seems more than the 10 years prior combined. I'm sure NY/NJ has it worse but this is an issue for locals that seems to have gotten twice as bad overnight....my current #1 issue is the traffic...
I visited my brother in Tampa back in 1978. He said the same thing back then. I'm sure it's much worse now.

Your 10 reasons are spot on accurate. We live in Tallahassee, and bought our house in 2013 for $220k. It's 2k sq ft roughly, and I could probably sell it for double that tomorrow. We are nowhere near the ocean, and probably as far away from that as anywhere else in Florida, but our homeowners insurance doubled last year to about $3,400. Property taxes have slowly climbed to about $2,700 as well. And yeah, it's next to impossible to get homeowners insurance because all of the larger carriers have left the state because of the hurricanes. State Farm, Allstate, et al do not insure in Florida. The fraud has something to do with it as well. One thing you sort of left out is the cost of auto insurance going up. Hurricanes affected that as well, because not only do hurricanes destroy houses, but they destroy cars too, so without an accident on either of our cars, or any sort of claim in the entire time we've had this policy with this company, our auto insurance skyrocketed last year.
Your comments about pools being expensive go back to my days growing up in Miami with a pool in our backyard in the 1980's, and my Dad saying almost weekly that we was so sick of fixing our (in ground btw) pool that he was going to fill it in with dirt and be done with it. You are spot on that pools are REALLY expensive. It's why whenever I looked for a house I always told the realtor to find houses without pools. And based on my past experience living in a house with a pool, after the first 6 months of living there, you rarely use your pool. Sure, it's nice to have, but you just don't use it much.
The wife and I have discussed leaving Florida for a year or so now, and really don't want to leave. But I'm 56 years old and not getting any younger. It would be nice to settle in a place where housing costs and the costs of living weren't so ridiculous. Sadly we live about 15 minutes from the Georgia border, and all of these costs would drop in half if we moved there. But yeah, your analysis was spot on accurate.
Only one point is valis...high home insurance but thats mostly in coastal areas OR in the panhandle where you. Look it up the panhandle actually has more hurricanes than south florida.move between orland and gainesville and even include The Villages in lake county i guarantee you insrance is much cheaper.you can even find brand new homes under 300k in the area i described!!
All other points apply to ALL states.all states have taxes.all states have expensive and cheaper areas
OMG and LOL we live in Miami and my husband born and raised here. He literally says that every time he buys chlorine. The pool is non stop problems. Currently we have a leak and fill it daily. He says he is very close to filling it with dirt and making a garden. 🤣 We've lived in this house since 1998 and can't even think about moving in this economy. Want to move north of Orlando before we die. That dream is not anywhere in reach right now.

Just sold my house in Tampa, had to do many updates to move it. Market is slow unless it’s a million dollar home. Between taxes and home insurance. It’s brutal. Our house had a sinkhole issue many years ago that was resolved with about 80k worth of work. Insurance companies didn’t care. We were constantly getting cancelled. From lower N.Y. lived there 36 years. Many changes. Especially traffic. Crazy. This lady knows what she’s talking about. Taxes are also vey high. I will say our healthcare and hospitals were great in Tampa. In Buffalo now. Loving everything but the hospitals here.

My husband and myself moved from Central New York to northern Florida during the pandemic to be closer to my family, that was a horrible mistake. we couldn't find any apartments and the homes were ridiculously expensive for first time buyers. We ended finding a cute affordable house in Western New York lol. But beside the housing issue Florida just isn't a paradise like people make it out to be, sadly people are unfriendly ,it's overcrowded ,dirty, has huge homeless population , way too hot , filled with poisonous spiders and snakes . What I find really funny is most of my neighbors moved to Florida and came back up to New York after some time lol

To refute what she mentioned...or rebut at least...it's WAY easier to find affordable rentals now than when she came. So she is misrepresenting the current affairs in Florida by comparing what she experienced at the absolute HEIGHT of the hysteria to rent and buy Florida during the pandemic. We have homeless but we manage them, we took heat for that a decade ago but look who ended up correct about coddling homeless people. By the by, I spend a lot of time with the homeless, each week, so I know what's up. There are zero point zero homeless people on the streets in downtown Sarasota where people go out to eat, shot and walk. None. They may be walking amongst everyone, sure, that's great, but they are not disrupting a single soul.
But please don't tell anyone. I was being truthful about how rude people from New York, Mass., NY, Illinois and California are compared to normal Sarasotans, which is mostly mid-western transplants. When the masses of this group came all at once, we saw a change in the way people behave at restaurants especially, but in public parks, etc.
For instance, I've been told now 5-6 times that the park that I've walked my dog off leash for the past 30 years, alongside dozens of other un-leashed dogs, requires a dog to be on leash. All 5-6 times have been since the great migration of 2021 and they all had northern accents. I am from Maine and can mimic any northeaster accent so I know where each are from. Sorry, most of the New York/Jersey, Mass., Californians have proven themselves not to be down with our vibe of being chill, on our heals in public not leaning forward. Slower. Relaxed and trying to make others relaxed, not out there returning your steak because it's too cold or treating the waiter as though he is your personal employee.
TLDR, we're happy to see them go and we would gladly assist in their packing, if they don't like 'the way we live.'

We have lived in Florida for seven years, we moved for a job, we feel fortunate to purchase our home before the price of homes went crazy. Everything you said is spot on. When we retire, we will move back to our home in NC, Florida has become so expensive for all the reasons you list, which you did not mention auto insurance, our rates probably went up about 50% since Hurricane Ian, that is with clean driving records and a company we have been with for decades. A pool is a "must" in Florida, I think mainly for resale, but it is expensive and requires much work. Also, many people move to Florida not knowing that all the ponds around the state have alligators and poisonous snakes living in them, it doesn't bother me, but many folks buy a home on the ponds and lakes and are shocked to see alligators sunning on the banks. Insurance for auto is now a across country issue not just Florida. Need to shop around and you will be close enough to other states. I honestly thought alligators was a concerned but noticed it super rare to encounter them. Most important thing is to respect them as like any other animal. Also, live by the water then of course you have to be willing to pay for the risk for sure. Things across rhe country is crazy with inflation sadly.

I worked in florida for 6 years I moved out in 2009, I moved to Atlanta on a work contract. 15 years in GA. moved back to my home state MI, paid cash for a fixer upper. lower property taxes here. in Michigan.
I met many people that came to South/SW Florida, and the ones that moved out usually cited the heat and cost of living. Too many people moved here, driving up the cost of almost everything.
I have lived in Florida since 1970. I attribute the greatest rise in home costs to so many people moving here from much wealthier states. They have driven up the cost of housing and decreased the availability of homes.

Oh, poor insurance companies... Give me a break! If they are so incompetent they can get defrauded by some roofing company, they are rightfully out of business. I live in rural FL, away from flood or hurricane prone zones, my insurance tripled in the last 2 years. Progressive sent me a cancellation letter "because my roof was supposedly old" , they never came around to check my roof. I replaced my roof (paid the full price, no "roof fraud") they still run and left me out to dry, some unknown newly popped up insurance company offered me triple the premium then run themselves too. The fraud are the insurance companies.
I don't think that insurance companies have feelings.

That’s not true at all . I have a swimming pool and it cost me only $185 per month for people to come in and service my pool twice a week. In FL you don’t have to worry about squatters, and they just passed the law no homeless sleeping on the public places and streets. So, people move to FL for many other good reasons.

Agree - However, if you are a seller, and people are moving to Florida to retire or to own a second home, having a pool is an advantage not a negative.
Yes, prices in certain places have gotten a bit out of hand, but Florida is still affordable in many areas compared to the West coast and near ANY major city.

@@Pokey-xp9gn Last summer, the water off of Naples and Marco Island passed the 90 degree mark in July and August. It's a giant sauna with wildlife. Key West recorded a water temp one day of 100 degrees. You can look it up.
What is absolutely astonishing to me is this has no mention of Florida's absolutely horrible climate, alligators, snakes, and bugs the size of Volkswagens. The humidity is oppressive ALL the time. I always keep a mosquito zapper going inside the house and I use a mosquito net over the bed when they get really bad and interfere with sleeping.

Lots of places have lots of mosquitoes. i remember Staten Island in the old days in the summer, and that is in NYC. They are a nuisance, but certainly not the worst thing about Florida.
The amount of homes being built and lack of infrastructure... roads... example - along rte US 1 in St Augustine.. that traffic is nuts!
I left Jax in ‘89 when I joined the Navy. There were hardly any traffic on US 1. Prices on everything were CHEAP and my apartment rent was $350. Glad I don’t live in Florida anymore.

He never returned to His native City of Ft. Wayne, Indiana. (Most of my relatives that lived there have never returned either. They moved to BIGGER and nosier Indianapolis.
Traffic along US 1 in St. Augustine isn’t great but much of that is from tourists and those coming into St. Augustine for the attractions it offers. He live in Palm Coast and come up to St. Augustine often and US 1 traffic isn’t horrible until we get near the city. That said we come up the A1A and traffic only gets congested near the Lion’s Bridge. Even concert traffic at the St. Augustine Amphitheater isn’t bad before and after a concert.
Jacksonville native here(boomer) who is planning to leave in a few years. I own a home in a neighborhood built in the 90’s with a layout perfect for a pool. Very few people here built them because of the hassle and expense. Also, overdevelopment and terrible traffic are issues. Not the only place with this problem and may not seem that bad to the many people here who are moving in from NY and NJ, but it’s getting there. Agree 100% about being very cautious about condos. Friends who live in them are worried about large assessments due to deferred maintenance and insurance woes. You didn’t mention this, and I know it’s controversial, but part of my reason for leaving for a retirement community in another state is climate change. Not ready for stronger hurricanes and more heat/humidity/ sea level rise.Will also mention that the safety net and in many counties public schools are poor, so those should be considered. And I am generally happy with my health care, but the system is strained, as it is in many places.

I’ve always had plans to move to FL even way before things got crazy because I just hate cold weather. I’ve spent about 3 months from June to August last year for work and got a little taste of what it’s like to live there. I’ve learned that:
1) the extreme humidity and heat doesn’t bother me at all. (My family is from the Caribbean so I guess it’s in my DNA lol)
2) reptilian encounters are pretty rare except for maybe the iguanas and small frogs in certain places.
3) I can adapt to the average the driving habits there pretty quickly. Just drive like the average person there does.
4) food isn’t **terribly** expensive compared to where I currently live, but I can empathize why someone who’s been living in FL for 40+ years would rightfully be outraged. In most cases it’s about only about slightly cheaper or the same if you shop at Publix compared to where I currently live (NYC). I’d much rather shop at a local mom and pop store anyway.
5) I noticed I felt a lot more productive and - and even motivated to run errands or go to the gym or go out in general due to the moderate boost in energy from the sun I guess.
6) I enjoyed the overall freedom-ness down there, and the people there are awesome (at least where I was staying) but as you get closer and closer to the big city (Miami) I found that most people are rude and always in a bad mood or in a rush (which I am already used to).
7) A pool is a ‘nice-to-have’ but as long as you’ve got fans or central cooling you’ll be fine.
8) I can see why someone who hates bugs and other critters wouldn’t want to move down there or down south in general. But just be mindful of lakes, ponds or creeks or other places that have standing water.
9) Haven’t experienced a hurricane while I was there yet, but would have to imagine it’s mostly just a matter of properly planning and preparing in a timely manner and not rushing for supplies at the last moment when a hurricane is already on approach.
10) Boomers? I was raised by them so I can deal with them 😂.
So personally, none of the things in this video are actual deal breakers for me, but just trade-offs from living in a colder climate, more expensive city. And a lot of the problems plaguing Florida right now are temporary.
Same!!! But now I have to work outside, I guess I will see where that leads as I get older, as I am Gen X and came before the 2008 housing "crash". I am also reasonable healthy and have managed to stay away from cancer.

I've been seeing many folks from Florida moving up here to North Carolina. Chatted with my neighbor that moved in from Florida and I was like why would you want to come here when you lived in Florida which I considered a paradise state once he gave me the reasons I was like oh got ya.
From Florida and you’re spot on other than the part about having a pool. It’s definitely not a must here to have a pool at your home. Most don’t get used year round anyways so a waste and hassle for a lot of people. Community pools in neighborhoods and recreational centers are common. Most locals prefer the beach anyway.
Moved to FL in 2016, got way more crowded when Covid hit, home prices shot up along with prop taxes and all insurances. Had to replace my roof in order to keep my home insurance. Whatever amount you think it costs here you need to budget way more than you think. While my wife and I can afford to live here my kids are finding it unaffordable due to high housing cost and low wages. Love FL but it’s expensive.

I'm in Michigan right now and looking to relocate to Florida. The Orlando area (but not necessarily in the city itself) seems about the best for me. It's in the center of the state, so hopefully outside the storm surge area in the event of a hurricane. When I bought my house in Michigan I paid about $176K ten years ago. Zillow tells me it would go for about $320K today. A house on my street recently sold for $280K. Even at the lower price, I could sell it and buy a nice home in Florida for little out of pocket. The only thing holding me back is the thought of the amount of work required to pack up everything I own and unpack it when I get there. I'm single, so I would have to do it all myself.

A couple of suggestions? First, be sure to plan an extended visit (>week) to look over the area that fits your budget, $300K is tight for the Orlando burbs. Second, a big move is tough, we started our packing in mid October and made our move in the first week of January, between moving and the holidays it's something I don't want to ever repeat. Get rid of as much as you can, we brought tons of stuff to Goodwill, gave away furniture, and we still ran out of time and had to store some stuff for a while.
I’m from Michigan too. My dream is to have a place in Florida and a small cabin up North in Michigan to escape the summer heat in Florida during the summer.
Moved my family here two years ago to support family member (space coast). Bought home in nice area. Paid too much for home. Property taxes 3x, auto insurance 4x. Quality of homes even new are poorly built. Weather is OK. Traffic and driving habits is just bad. Homeless and I know it exists everywhere is really bad here. We don't feel safe when out. We visited for at least 10 years prior to moving and I thought that we did our research! We have a child that will be finishing high school here and that has not been a good experience. I really thought we would like it here but its just not been the case. Number wise I losing money staying here for retirement. I don't think the cites are doing a good job with keeping up with infrastructure. Now that beach towns are charging for parking its not worth going. Restaurant experience and food quality is poor, we just stay home now. Time to move back to Midwest.
Moved down here in 04 love it. Came back up north during the recession. Worst move I ever made. You're missing the best part of Florida. The people, relaxed and retired. Love my Q-tips!!
I was born in FL and left when I was 36 for Raleigh. I agree with most of what you said, but by no means is a swimming pool a necessity. I would be surprised if more than 15% of FL houses had a swimming pool.
You didn't mention climate as its own reason, but FL is varying degrees of SWELTER for about 90% of the year that i found to be intolerable. Between that and the rising sea levels that have been recorded in Miami, Jacksonville, etc, I'm not optimistic about the livability of FL even for people who tolerate the heat well. I'm rather happy with Raleigh/NC, and can't imagine anything intrinsic bringing me back to live there.

The fear some have that live here year round is that there will be a major influx into our beautiful state that will change the character for the worse. Although I try to reassure them that the Jersey folks who love their state do so for a reason and those that choose to relocate also do so for a reason or multiple reasons.

I’ve lived in the coastal Tampa Bay Area since I was 16 and it has definitely changed. My husband and I were lucky enough to have purchased our home during the tail end of the market crash in 2014. If we hadn’t bought when we did, there is ZERO chance we could have stayed here. The rent here for a 1/1 apartment is $1800/mo. Our mortgage has nearly doubled due to homeowners insurance hikes. There are NO houses in my area for under 300k and the ones under 400k are small and run down or in sketchy neighborhoods. You were pretty spot on your points, with the exception of the pool. You absolutely do not HAVE to have a pool. Yes it’s nice to have but not a necessity. Plus many communities have a neighborhood pool that is part of the HOA. Another consideration is that car insurance is also very expensive down here as well. Sadly we and many of our friends are considering moving out of state because it’s just not practical anymore. 😢

Florida was inexpensive to move to 30+ years ago. For seniors, it was fabulous. But myself, Florida looked pretty good in my 20s but unfortunately, I never liked the hot and humid weather since I was from Connecticut. Now retired, we picked a state that is not perfect but is beautiful ❤️. I can deal with hardships, as long as it is not getting raped by money hungry tax states.
Still a good deal compared to NY & NJ. I'm from NJ. Good luck trying to find a house for $400k in NJ. I like NJ and I like FL. Just stay away from flood zones and HOAs
Sadly, as of the beginning of last year home owners who were not in a flood zones were forced by some insurance companies to carry Flood coverage. My friend, Glenda and her sister are both in insurance, both from NJ, both live in FL for the last 30 years and one owns her own insurance company in Ft Lauderdale. Many of their clients are calling to change their rental property insurance documents to stipulate they are no longer renting, Wink Wink, because the rental insurance coverage increases went up %400. The risk of doing so is high but the rates are skyrocketing.
Agree 1000%. Lots of fear mongering and cope in this video. I'm a snowbird from NYC who is now spending 6+ months on the beach in Florida. Florida sales tax is 7%; it's 8.625% in NYC. Insurance for my co-op unit is $770 per year ($500 in NYC) and my monthly maintenance in FL is $511 ($1627 in NYC). Groceries in FL and NYC are comparable; however, there are no Chinatowns in Florida, so there are less fresh produce and "ethnic" grocery stores in FL. Sure, there is some crime in FL but I suspect it's much worse in NYC and FL is pretty much free of illegal immigrants. If it wasn't for the dreadful summer weather, I would stay in FL all year. It is awesome!
I agree.. great response.. Coming from a law enforcement background in FL I know the crime is not being reported. Yes. Lots of non dpcumented persons both contributing to the GPD, renting from mom and pop landlords and some bad apples in the drug and sex trafficking space but many more no one has car insurance let alone a valid license. I feel so bad for the people who move here and only capture a surface level understanding of the community and crime areas. We have a huge homeless problem and most don't know Delray Beach is the rehab capital of the nation.

I am 54 years old and have lived in Florida the past 52 years. It use to be extremely affordable to live here but these days insurance is off the wall and housing prices over inflated. That being said, it’s still a great place to live just be aware of the hurricanes.
I lived in the Hollywood, FL area; I would not go back, too tropical; I'd go to Daytona area instead if I returned.
We moved to Tampa, Florida in summer 2021. Bought a house and got a 2.99% interest rate VA mortgage. Having lived in the midwest my entire life, I very much enjoy it here. Is that traffic crazy sometimes? Yes. It's also crazy in many other places around the country so there's nothing different there. The weather has been warm but this is why we moved here. We love the heat, the beaches, the food scene and the activities. Don't regret moving here. Don't plan on leaving here. Also, don't really care if my neighbors stay or leave or if some Joe Blow from NYC decides to move here. We are a free country and we are all free to move when/where we want to move. If you aren't happy in Florida, feel free to leave.
I live in Massachusetts and looking at everything combined, Florida taxes are still a lot less. Homeowners and car insurance are the big problem. Whatever you save in taxes you could lose in those areas.

I moved to Florida in the late 80's and it was still pretty good and pretty affordable. I left in 2004 to move out west and I go back every year and it gets more crowded and unaffordable. The big attraction to Florida was always it was a cheaper place to live and there were no state taxes and also the weather (I only liked the Florida weather 5-6 months a year). Now that so many people live in Florida and will keep moving there as all the retirees from the Northeast will keep moving there it will keep going downhill , another place that is a victim of it's own success.
Having lived in Florida 55 miles north of Tampa near the Gulf on a river.I agree with your assessment of costs. We now live in South Carolina 25 miles inland from the ocean. The cost of a new home, Insurance (no Flood Insurance needed), and association fees have been a huge difference. Example: Home insurance in FL went from $1600 / yr to $3100 / yr. and Flood Ins was $4500 / yr.

As a realtor in South Florida I would agree with you on all points just to keep more people from buying here, but in reality Florida is a great state to live and work in. Yes insurance may be high, we weather the storms, we have seniors slowing the traffic, we do have high prices on real estate, we are overly populated, but we have the beat beaches in the south, the best hospitals, the most entertainment and lots of sunshine. So do not worry about the fear factor on this video. Every state has their ups and downfalls. Come and join the happiest people on earth!

INSURANCE! I live in Pensacola and my home insurance in 2022 was $3,700. Last year it went up to $5,800. Now, for the new year starting in September, my home insurance is $9,800!!! I cannot afford that! So now I have to pack up and move!
I have lived in Florida on and off since the 60's. I've been here this time since 1990. I own my own house, and I had three houses and two of them duplexes. Some of what you said is true, some of it is out of context.
Florida is like most states - high insurance, high taxes, too much traffic and sometimes iffy health care.
Florida has some great health providers, and I will call out Shands Hospital in Gainsville as one of them. They run one of the best hospitals in the nation, with cutting edge technology and care. There are others, but do your homework. Florida is hot in the summer. HOT. Homes vary in cost depending on where you live. Florida has a lot of "backwater" Old Florida towns away from the beaches that are wonderful and not as pricey, some are near rivers or bays. Jobs may be an issue, as Florida is low industry, relying on tourist dollars. That means a lot of low paid jobs. But if you work for yourself it can be very lucrative. Even housekeepers get $30 an hour, as there are a lot of wealthy people here. The weather is mostly great, the air quality is mostly great, but traffic in high tourist areas can be messy, like many crowded areas, traffic can be hard. Stay away from HOA's for so many reasons. Stay away from condos as they have control of how much they charge you, which is often out of your control. Do your homework. People are flooding down here after selling their homes up north. They are coming with plenty of cash, and are spending like drunken sailors. Which means good money for the service industries.
So, my suggestion is to look inland for a smaller town than Tampa or Orlando but that provides what you look for in colleges, schools, etc.
Since I'm a "Boomer," your reference to "crawling with Boomers" was a total and unnecessary insult. Yes, we have an aging population here. But we also have an "all age" population here. If all you want to see is people who are not Boomers, then go somewhere else. There are services here that cater to the older population, which is an asset, because people who are in their 40's who move here, are also looking for services for their parents or older siblings. We have a lot of assisted living facilities and subsidized apartments, which many places don't have. We have senior tour groups and cruises, meetups and home care services. Many social events for seniors. There are great bus services and facilities have their own transportation.
There is a lot to love about Florida, depending on where you are talking. Florida is a huge state, so you cannot paint it with one brush. Inland is agricultural and rural, while beaches and Orlando are tourist and crowded. Everyone from the northern states are here. A LOT of people from New Jersey and New York.
No disrespect to Boomers. Seriously. When I did my research to make this video, that was something that came up and I found that interesting. Younger families may want to be around more young families which is why I mentioned the boomer population. I apologize for insulting. Not my intent. And thank you for sharing your personal insight.

Also as a nurse who's worked in multiple States, there is great Healthcare here in Florida, don't let Healthcare fear be a reason not to move here, because of this lady's one experience turn you off.... I have friends who work in New Jersey and New York..... and botched operations happened there also. Most of the other stuff is accurate however, even if a little hyperbolic.

Born and raised in FL, family members still there. I would never move back. So many other nice areas of the country to live in without the overpopulation, crappy weather (3 H's: Heat, Humidity, Hurricanes), ridiculously priced homes (good luck getting affordable home owners insurance). OK to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there again. Old Florida was awesome. Current Florida? Not so much.
