I saw Santana in Passau, Germany in 1978 or 1979. If I remember rightly, during Europa the rest of the band left the stage, went back to the hotel for a shower and a change of clothes, then went out for a meal. When they got back, Carlos was still holding that note.
this old man absolutely wore me out at the Fox theatre back in about early 80's....he did the concert, and then did countless encores each of which seemed to be about 30 min....I can't remember how many because my young (at that time) self finally went to the lobby and sat down for a breather........incredible.
An honor & privilege to have seen & heard this performance. I’ve been listening to Santana since 1970 & I have the Europa album, but to see him play it is magical.
Grew up listening to Santana. I loved their early stuff, but really loved "Open Invitation" with Alex Ligertwood on vocals. Carlos kicked ass on this live version. I'm so old I considered this as new Santana at the time, even tho I was around 17 or so! Lol.
I have been fortune to have seen Santana Live 4 times. Always an incredible performance. You want to see Carlos have all of Mexico City Dancing to "Samba Pa Ti"... (Dance party) Live In Mexico City... Make sure it is this Live version..... Samba Pa Ti - Santana (Live in Mexico)
I was in the audience for this concert from the Hammersmith Odeon in London and which was part of a BBC tv/radio simulbroadcast a few weeks later. Awesome as this tune was and still is, the song that sticks most in my memory was Revelations. W O W.
I’ve been a fan over 40 years and I’m blown away by this live version, Carlos in his prime. Thanks to RUclips for giving me the honor of watching this. Thanks to you too, brother . You got a follow.
Dance Sister Dance which is also on the album Amigos is a great tune. Was fortunate to see this song and dance sister dance performed live in the spring of 1976
Got to see him in 76 when walking through the neighborhood a kid ran up to sell tickets. Asked him what he had, he said Blazers, Santana. I grabbed 7 tickets for 21 dollars and wasn’t sure till we got in if they were good lol. Small venue with amazing acoustics. Great show at 3 bucks a pop….
The live version from, Moonflower's my favourite... I wrote that before checking out the video...THIS IS IT, THANKS❗ Just like the greatly underappreciated, Jeff Beck, their instrument's are truly their VOICE'S❗ As iconic and incredible as "Soul Sacrifice", is from Woodstock...Carlos tone in particular, evolved from his thinner, '60's Gibson SG, to his '70's Yamaha & later, PRS signature models. Rather than his earlier, rhythmic, bluesy, RnB feel, it became this heavier, sustained cry, via his pedals & Mesa Boogie amplification. But behind it all, it's in the hands & vision of a master, inspired from beyond. If you haven't already, please treat yourself to, "Song of the Wind", from Caravanserai, featuring a incendiary guitar duo between Carlos & future Journey-man, Neal Schon. The 17 year old prodigy opted to join Santana, turning down Eric Clapton's invitation to join Derek & the Dominos, (former Domino, Bobby Whitlock, later denied his story). ruclips.net/video/XdmevPWZTRg/видео.html
What a beautiful soul! Saw em' 4 times and each time was great! Don't know a lick of Spanish, but I understand all of his Spanish language songs because of his ability to communicate emotionally. His Latin roots separated him from all the 60's and 70s greats by having a unique sound. Plus, I love the tone of his guitar. So very soothing even when he's killing it. Chod thanks for the post. You can never go wrong with Carlos.
Thank you for Santana, one of my favorite performers/bands. I was lucky enough ( and old enough) to have seen them perform live twice. The first time was around 1972 at an outdoor event, sitting out under the stars listening to them was magic. Then saw them again in a completely different setting in the late 80's - much mellower concert with middle aged crowd drinking wine and grooving to this music style. Long life Carlos, thank you for years of wonderful music.
12.27.21. September 1, 1978. @ The old Flint IMA™️ (Michigan). He even had the Bats 🦇 stirred 🆙 in that place, no shitt❗️He played this song, and the crowd was hypnotized😵💫
That's the great Graham Lear on drums. I always thought he looks quite alot like Michael Shrieve (Santana's drummer from Woodstock). Santana's first 6 albums will always be a major landmark in my own musical tates. He touches upon spiritual emotions like no other. Great reaction bro, I was wondering when someone would do Europa at long last.
Thanks for a great discussion on Santana and “Europa.” I saw them open for the Stones in 1981 and as headliners about 4 years ago. Terrific both times! Brother Carlos is deep. Europa is the name of one of Planet Jupiter’s moons. How he got interested in that I haven’t heard but the full name of the song is “Europa (Earth’s Cry Heaven’s Smile). This has been a popular song for contemporary jazz artists to cover, especially for saxophone. It translates very well from guitar to sax.
I was here to mention the same thing. I actually like it at least as well as the original. Girlfriends and future wives responded very well to Gato's version from the Caliente album. ruclips.net/video/YfyCrpUOAJw/видео.html
The drummer on this song is Graham Lear, he was the long time drummer for Gino Vannelli. You've reacted to a couple of Gino songs that he's played on, All I Ever Wanted, Storm At Sunup and People Gotta Move, one of the most underrated drummers of all time! You should check out Love Of My Life on Gino's Gist Of The Gemini album, "you won't be disappointed". Gemini
I saw Santana back in '78 with the person that introduced me to Carlos's incredible guitar playing. We saw him in Philadelphia and we were standing within 25 feet from the stage. Great concert and memories. Miss you Pic, wish you were still with us.
His playing is brilliant. His band is always top notch. And if you listen, he throws in little licks from George Benson, the Stones, John Coltrane. And damn, that one note he holds…
I am somewhat new to your page , I just recently started following your reactions and you have reacted to every one of my favorite songs and artists in my 61 years of life , Supertramp , Moody blues , Alvin Lee , Carlo Santana , And the list goes on !! 😎🙏✌️
So glad you are discovering this specific song from the Master, Santana. Classic heavenly sounding beauty.😍 Love your journey into the depths and variety of music 💕
Chod, thank you for playing this gorgeous song! You have no idea how many times I have made this request to by played & you are the first to actually do it. I grew up hearing Santana's music on the radio & have always been a fan, but this song is my all-time favorite, hands down!
Wow! I've never seen this performance! I saw them around this time (Moonflower tour) at the Palladium. Late show. Eric Gale opened for them. Santana came on about midnight and jammed until 3 AM. One of the best shows I've ever seen in my life.
Such beautiful tone, have always loved Santana's smooth and beautiful sound. On a side note a lot of people say I looked a lot like Santana, right down to the "porn" mustache I had in the 80's. 😁
You might want to listen to the studio version of Europa as well. They keyboard mix is not in the forefront as it is in the studio cut....and it is a big part of the melody.
That's one of my live, sound man litmus tests...can I hear the keys? Usually NOT! I'm not too shy, often going to the board and sounding off about it...
Which drummer? Santana has at least three drummers, bongos two drum kits and other percussion instruments behind him. He was quite young there he still had a head full of hair. Carlos is like fine wine he keeps getting better with age
I loved his early stuff. But this song is from the time era after he started hangin around with like John McLaughlin.....people with more of a jazz background and it greatly affected his playing. This is a great time era for his music. Well worth a long listen.. He did a double live album.....I think it was called Moonflower or something.....really good album.....and you should also check his album called Marathon with a named Chris Solberg playing the other guitar......you also need to check out his older album called Abraxas with the guitarist from Journey playing the other guitar....you need to check out the song Touissant Overture from the Abraxas album.....really great song.
Some great points...I bought Moonflower when it first was released, during my high school days. Some of the double disc features studio tracks, as well. Neal Schon was a prodigal 17, when he turned down Eric Clapton's invitation, (to join the Dominos), becoming a member of Santana. ☆ Check out this smoke show duo between the two‼️ ruclips.net/video/XdmevPWZTRg/видео.html
@@loilt5091 I bought the Moonflower album when it came out too. But that was a long time ago and I unfortunately have not listened to the album in maybe 15 or 20 years or more even. Am glad it was looked at here. It brought it to my attention again. So thanks for that guys. Had forgotten how good it is. Maybe it's time for me to give it another listen.
It’s one of the most beautiful songs that he has ever written. I went to see him last month and he is still incredible at 74.
I saw Santana in Passau, Germany in 1978 or 1979. If I remember rightly, during Europa the rest of the band left the stage, went back to the hotel for a shower and a change of clothes, then went out for a meal. When they got back, Carlos was still holding that note.

AHHHHH I can't believe you did this song. MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE. THANK YOU.

An honor & privilege to have seen & heard this performance. I’ve been listening to Santana since 1970 & I have the Europa album, but to see him play it is magical.
The world is ready to hear this again...long overdue, thanks Chod
This song was probably on EVERY mix tape created in the 1970's!
My absolute favorite. So beautiful.
YOU'VE JUST GOT TO GOT TO HEAR (I LOVE YOU MUCH TOO MUCH) CARLOS SANTANA
Incredible, only Carlos Santana can make the requinto cry like that, wonderful, a hug
Europa has always been one of my favorite Santana tunes.
Made my first born to this song!
Grew up listening to Santana. I loved their early stuff, but really loved "Open Invitation" with Alex Ligertwood on vocals. Carlos kicked ass on this live version. I'm so old I considered this as new Santana at the time, even tho I was around 17 or so! Lol.
No other guitar player than Carlos Santana. Hendrix, Vaugh maybe....but this man makes the guitar cry!
Greg Walker was the singer on the album. Inner Secrets.
Man! Can Santana take you away! to another world...a beautiful world...peaceful...vibrant.... Thank you for sharing this, brother.
BEAUTIFUL ,RAPTUROUS , VIVA CARLOS.
un chef d'oeuvre musical👍👍👍👍
There are only a few guitarists who have created their own signature sound: BB King, Jimi Hendrix, and Carlos Santana.
I love how he makes his guitar weep. Always a brings it. God bless
Carlos!!!!!!!
Great tune! Try "Samba pa ti" if you haven't listened to that one yet. Live versions are fantastic.
This is my favorite Santana song
Masterful guitar playing. I always prefer the original recordings but Carlos killed it on this live performance.

This is Santana baby making music. I made my son to this, lol. I know for a fact. He was an infant and slept to Santana's greatest hits... lol.

Hi, This isn't the actual cut that made the Moonflower album...from the same era, 76/77 but not the live version that's on Moonflower P & L :)
Yes, Chod. I believe I asked for this one a while back. Very few reactions to this one across RUclips. This song is very special to me. Thank you!
I love Europa but my favorite is Transcendance. Listen to that one when you can. Love your reactions...thanks Chod!!!
Right on with the Transcendence! Beautiful song! So much feeling. Want it played at my funeral. Keep smiling Peggie!
One of Santana’s. EST!
The beauty and chaos of the universe ( Earth's cry and Heaven's smile ) Kudos to you for being able to play it through with pausing
Europa is probably my favorite Santana song. Mike Schrive is a magician on the drums.
Mike had left by the time they were playing/had recorded this song..the drummer is Graham Lear P&L :)
Beautiful,is what it is.
Gives you the chills every time.
I absolutely loved everything about this mid 70s era of Carlos Santana. That guitar was the bomb too. Wish he still played that one.
What a beautiful soul! Saw em' 4 times and each time was great! Don't know a lick of Spanish, but I understand all of his Spanish language songs because of his ability to communicate emotionally. You just don't listen to Santana, you feel the emotions in the music!
Vey true P%L :)

I saw Santana in I think 1972. The whole concert was instrumental except they did Black Magic Woman. It was a phenomenal concert.
This is thee first song I ever learned to play on the guitar. It's still my daily warm up song along with question of u by prince. Still 13yrslater
“And now presenting Mr and Mrs 😅” they play this at almost every wedding or quincinera when I was growing up

Yes!! I was going to suggest that too.
and Song of the Wind from Caravanserai P & L :)
I love this song! It's my ringtone! So glad you did this! "Samba PaTi" next please!
So many great Santana songs to choose from. I'll give you a little known one. The River. I think of my wife whenever I hear it.
Carlos makes the guitar TALK.

My very favorite Santana piece, and this live version is the best of them ALL..Thank you!!
Master of tone and melody, that’s Carlos for ya!
This has hints of SRV’s Rivera Paradise with a little George Benson n there.. Excellent.
I saw Santana back in '78 with the person that introduced me to Carlos's incredible guitar playing. We saw him in Philadelphia and we were standing within 25 feet from the stage. Great concert and memories. Miss you Pic, wish you were still with us.
The live version of Toussaint L'Overture on Moonflower is another level again . Wow 💥💥
Oh for that Yamaha SG sound again !!!!
Nobody can squeeze more passion out of a sustained note like Santana
Santana songs through his guitar...
Magic, great word for it.....
His playing is brilliant. His band is always top notch. And if you listen, he throws in little licks from George Benson, the Stones, John Coltrane. And damn, that one note he holds…
They are nothing less than "Musical Masters". Carlos Santana does it again!!

Anybody ever seen "Manos: Hands of Fate"? I didn't know the master could play guitar!
If you get a chance, check out Santana with George Benson playing Breezin' on the Midnight Special. Another great jam.
top 10 guitarist ever...
This song moves me every time. Such an beautiful song
Had the pleasure of seeing him twice. '79 and '82. The most enjoyable concert I've ever been to. Just put on his "Moonflower" album and let it play.
A nice track this, it is remake of "Emporte-Moi" from 1967

BTW, you should give a listen to the studio version too.
Next....Let It Shine, a great counterpoint to Europa. Same album, last song, and it's a goody, do not deny yourself this treat!

I love this record. I can also recommend : I love you much too much. I'm sure you will like it. 🎸🎸💕💕
This is my 2nd fave Santana. Also look for Coal Train with Santana, Cesar Rosa, Jimmy & Stevie Ray Vaughan. Talk about guitar heaven!
Such beautiful tone, have always loved Santana's smooth and beautiful sound. On a side note a lot of people say I looked a lot like Santana, right down to the "porn" mustache I had in the 80's. 😁
My go to when I need to reflect
Soul refuel
Also try from the album Dance With The Rainbow Serpent, "Bella", and "Aqua Marine". Both of these songs will put you in a trance.
This was in London.
I haven't heard this for awhile.

Matt Thompson I meant..for the drum cam of King Diamond..Welcome Home
...amazing guitar work and amazing work from the whole band on the song "All I Ever Wanted" from the Marathon album....
Another version by Gato Barbieri on Sax!!
Carter Beaufort is a drummer that you'll like once you hear him.
🔥🔥🎶🎶🎶🎶💯💯
Beautiful. You should also listen to his album with John McLaughlin, Love Devotion and Surrender.
