  • Recently took a trip down to Grayton/Santa Rosa Beach/Destin Florida to surf fish for pompano, and whatever else was biting. Caught my limit and then some! All pomps were caught on pompano rigs using sand-flea flavored fish bites for bait. 2-4oz pyramid weights, 20-30lb braid, 25lb leader pompano rigs.
    Reels: Daiwa Saltiga 8000, Daiwa Certate SW 5000
    Rods: Penn prevail II 10ft, Daiwa BG combo rod 10ft.

    This is the fishing I'm used to for sure. Down here near south Padre island, that's the majority of our fishing is surf fishing the beach with fishbites.

      Yeah those fish bites are money for sure! I'll throw bigger cut baits for reds/jacks/sharks, but I've found for whiting and pompano you can't beat fish bites!

    Lol. I’m gonna near Miramar the first week of September. Hoping I can have half as much success as you had in May. Looks like so much fun!
    And Fish Bites are definitely great bait!

    Thanks for the video. No offense meant, but I have never seen someone reel so fast with a fish on, LOL. I have self made rulers on my rods so I can measure them right at the rod holder, just an idea. Thanks again. Update, went to Destin for 4 days last week April 13-16-2024, fished for 3 days, caught 1 Bonita and 1 slot Redfish. Joke's on me, couldn't catch a Pompano to save my life. Still wracking my brain. Maybe I needed a 12 or 15# wt line Pompano rig instead of 20#, I don't know. I have no problem here in NE Florida, but the Gulf was tough for fishing. I must say, prettiest water I've ever seen!

    I got spike by a sail cat and the pain was absolutely insane. So be careful.

    Man, I am looking to get back down to Destin in the Fall. I've been told about how much those sand flea flavored bites work. Beats diggin and huntin for them. Great work bud, can't wait to get rigged up for that.

      Thanks brotha! Yeah I spent years using cut bait/shrimp/ live fleas, but ever since I switched to strictly fish bites I've been tearing up the pomps when I'm down there. Although I will sometimes throw out a big cut bait for big reds/jacks.

      Sometimes the fish just aren’t there.

    Great video. In all of my years of fishing the gulf coast, I've only caught ONE Pompano. I've heard that these fish are very good to eat. Unfortunately, the one I caught was too small. And I've never caught another one since. What is a good way to prepare it: baked, fried...?

    • @AikenAngling
      @AikenAngling  2 года назад +2

      Thanks! A lot of people bake them, sometimes in a paper bag, sometimes just fillets. People also grill them on the half shell. For the ones I caught in this video, I grilled half of them on cedar planks, and lightly pan fired the rest and they were absolutely fantastic! Its weird, because their meat is really firm when you clean them, but softens up really nicely once cooked. It took me a few trips to start having success with pompano. The key thing I learned is to only use fish bites/ fish gum for bait unless you want something bigger than pompano/whiting. Every time I've used shrimp, sand fleas, or cut bait I haven't had nearly as much luck as I have with just fish bites. The other key thing is to put your baits right on either side of the sand bars. Those pomps just cruise the bars all day looking for bait. Goodluck next time you're out chasing them!

    How do you keep the June grass from glueing to your line and ruining your trip? Is it as simple as finding a spot that doesn’t have much?

    • @AikenAngling
      @AikenAngling  2 года назад +1

      Depends on how bad the grass is, the first two days of this trip I couldn't fish because there was so much and the surf was rough, but once the surf calmed down the grass didn't build up on my line as much. By the last two days the grass was pretty much gone. On the worst days I just threw topwater instead, During the other bad days I would just leave the rigs out for like 15-20 minutes at a time and then reel them back to clear the grass and managed a couple fish doing this. Good luck next time you're out!

    What size rod & reel you using for us beginners 😂

    • @AikenAngling
      @AikenAngling  11 месяцев назад

      I generally use 5000 size or bigger for the reel, but honestly you could get away with using as small as a 3000. The rod is much more important, I use 10 foot surf rods rated for 2-6oz of lure weight so I can throw these heavy rigs!

      @@josebenavides7354 I just got back from there again yesterday myself! I always run either 20 or 30 on braid as my main line for surf fishing. My favorite brands are power pro and Daiwa j-braid.
