Greatest Australian band no-one's ever heard of.
About
Radio Birdman is an Australian punk rock band formed by Deniz Tek and Rob Younger in Sydney in 1974. The group influenced the work of many successful, mainstream bands, and are now considered instrumental in Australia's musical growth. Wikipedia
Origin: Sydney, Australia
OH man, the Radios, from my youth, late 70s early 80s - this band - and many others ruled the Oz Rock scene. Thank you so much for giving them some love.
Radios, Radiators, The Church, Midnight Oil, Mental as Anything, Hunters and Collectors, Angels - the Aussie East Coast Live Rock Scene in the late 70s and 80s
was insane. Love your work Wolfies
Yeah. Me too.
Our current Prime Minister is a Birdman fan. Even mentioned lyrics in parliament!
Yeah, shame he is a dick though!
Headline reads, Australian PM, breaks promise to lower power bills and cost of living, is pretty much useless as a politician, but at least he has good taste in music!
i saw birdman in 97 in sydney and albo was there near us in the mosh pit.
So now you know? Birdman greatest Oz band ever! Began performing at Sydney venues in 1974. Seminal Radios Appear released 1976. Described their sound as high energy rock & roll. Guitarists originally from US. Chris Masuak from Klondike and Denis Tek a Detroit native, which probably explains their obvious Stooges/MC5 influences? Tek even plays an Epiphone Crestwood previously
owned by Wayne Kramer.
Radio fucking Birdman! Fuck yes!
So stoked to see this!!! They are STILL unbelievably incredible live - 50 years on - so much energy. never get tired of that sound.
And that's just ONE of the Australian pub bands from the day!!!
The Saints (Brisbane) & Radio Birdman (Sydney) appeared around the same time, 1973-74 some 1000 klm's apart. They play great fast rock'n'roll. Neither band regard themselves as 'punk' but were the first bands in our country who were the trail blazers of DYI. Had to book their own concert venues and pressed their first singles and EP's themselves. Both their first three albums are a must - The Saints - (I'm) Stranded '77; Eternally Yours '78 and Prehistoric Sounds '78. Radio Birdman - Radios Appear (dark cover) '77; Radios Appear (white cover, Overseas Version) '78 and Living Eyes (recorded in 1978 in Wales but not released until 1981 after the band had already broken up). Chris Bailey, the lead singer from The Saints was once asked 'what was the best thing about going to Sydney (back in the day ie 1977), his answer ''meeting Radio Birdman''. The two bands shared a concert together at the Paddington Town Hall on the 3 April 1977. There is live footage of this on youtube.
Love both bands. Their stories are fantastic and similar. All their music is GREAT. ALL. Both go off.
Check out Birdman's lead guitarist and main song writer Deniz Tek who is from Ann Arbor, Michigan. He came out to complete his medical studies in the early 1970's. His story alone is of a genius who thankfully shared that genius with the world. He's a trauma specialist, fronts one of the greatest bands ever, did his military service as a flight surgeon in the US Navy (he's a joint citizen), flew F-4 Phantom's and his callsign was ''Iceman''. Rumour is that that character in the movie Top Gun is based a little on Deniz. Check out the song ''Aloha Steve & Dano'' (the song and part of the riff are from the TV show Hawaii 5-0).
DIY, sorry guys got a little dyslexic
Im a boomer and used to see this band at every oppotunity I could. The rocked the pub scene like no other. I dont know what happened to high intensity rock, but I sure do miss it. Thanks for bringing back my youth. Ps look up Radios Appear, you will love it.
Deniz Tek the guitar guy is American . He came here when he was young and stayed. He lives in Hawaii now. And he is a doctor. Like a medical doctor
Pip Hoyle on keyboards is also a doctor.
Saw the Radio’s in Melbourne back in the mid 70’s. Fucken awesome.
How lucky were we in Australia to have this music all to ourselves!!!
Fuck yeah this is cool. Birdman are one of my fave bands, the records are fantastic and even now with them all pushing 70, when they play live they play really fucking hard. I last saw them play live in 2018 and they just destroyed with how hard they played and how good they still sound. Deniz Tek is one of my all time fave guitarists and one of the coolest dudes who's ever walked the Earth, a guitar shredder who became an ER doctor who became a Navy surgeon and then a fucking fighter pilot and back to rock'n'roll.
As a suggestion, check out their ARIA Hall Of Fame induction video, where they play to a room of mostly stuffy recording industry executives and decide fuck it and just kill it live anyway, the live version of New Race from that night is phenomenal.
OH my God! 2023 and I found you guys are reacting to 'the Birdies!!!' So bloody cool awesome!!
That was a great response! RB is truly one of the best of Aussie history. Their US tour in 2007 was EPIC!! Also, check out New Race "The First and The Last" -- it's a live record with overdubs that the core of RB did with Ron Ashton, of the Stooges, and John Densmore, the drummer of the Doors. The album is on YT, and you also likely will enjoy The New Christs, which is Rob Younger, the RB lead singer with other musicians when RB isn't active. RB guitarist Deniz Tek is an American, and became a fighter pilot (the character of Ice Man was based on him, in Top Gun) and an emergency room surgeon, in addition to continuing to record great rock with RB and other projects! Thanks for doing this video! :) Now, check out "DUMB WAITERS" (the full version, which is 5:06 minutes, not the cut version of their official video here on YT) by THE PSYCHEDELIC FURS!!
New Race’s drummer was the MC5’s Dennis ‘Machine Gun’ Thompson!!! Rock Action was the original choice but couldn’t make it because of prior commitments!!! And Dennis played with Ron in the New Order, so it was a good fit!!!
Dennis Thompson of MC5 was the drummer for New Race... Everything else was on the money.
Well Burn My Eye, Radios Appear! Book ‘em Dano
Aloha Steve and Dano ,about the original Hawaii 50 and TV eye.
One of the greatest original punk bands in the world .
The footage at 5:05 was from a recorded for TV one night at the Marrickville Hotel in Adelaide, Im in the clip
They were so good live , the energy was on another level !!
Radio birdman is the best
When the Birdman flies the limits are high
Epic...and important rock and roll band.
Australia has been rolling out the real deal goods for a very long time.
The Saints next mebbe?
Radios rule!
Weird fact: Madonna in a 90s' print interview, named the Radios as an influence on her music. I cant see it.
Must have been a different Radio Birdman. I remember my older brother talking about them but I was a bit young, only 13 when they split up so never got to see them live.
You can see their influence in so many bands, The Sunny Boys, The Hoodoo Gurus and a shit tonne of indy bands you would only hear on RRR or JJJ. Before their time.
@@iankearns774 Influencing the whole 'Oz pub rock' scene.
@@iankearns774 Re Madonna. Have to be. I think it may have been a green music journo or PR, giving her a back story or just as filler. But i guess, the womans' got ears; cant help but be inspired.
I'm a lucky Aussie who is going with a mate to see them live on their last tour, in Brisbane June 2024. I've seen them before and they deliver 100%. This is a band with the guts to play how they wanted to play. The footage you saw was probably 1976-77. They were pre-punk and they were not liked by the mainstream. But they liked The Stooges, etc, and helped form the superstructure for future punk/hard rock bands. I'm glad you enjoyed the song. Their first 2 albums are good.
Holy sheeet! Really? Fantastic
Guitarist Deniz Tek is actually American, also a qualified fighter pilot. KIller band, definitely one of our best.
It's worth checking out the excellent documentary "DESCENT INTO THE MAELSTROM"

They just played their 50th year reunion gig in Sydney, they were still amazing. Radio Birdman and The Saints were in you eyes the 2 best Australian bands in the mid to late '70s.
If you haven't done The Saints yet, do yourself a favour and listen to their songs "Stranded", and apparently one of Kurt Cobains favourite songs " Know your product ".
best australian band ever
Saw them live, unreal...
I saw birdman at Frenches tavern on Oxford street back in the seventies i used to go there to a see another band called sweet poison on Tuesday nights. They were great but never took off.
Trying to climb those damn stairs after being wasted were a nightmare.
watch the documentary 'descent into the maelstrom' - it's fabulous!
lead guitar and song writer Deniz Tek is still an ER surgeon in Hawaii due to his US/Aussie duel citizenship
What you need to remember here is that this band started in 74. The only people they were influenced by were the Stooges, MC5 and the Dolls. They spawned a hundred bands in Australia.
Looks like a Nirvana gig back when Kurt's hair was long and he would throw himself into the crowd just like the lead singer Rob Younger.
Awesome band
A truly great band. Didn't get to see them till their reformation in 1996 but made up for it ever since. My favourite song of theirs too.
The .ead guitarist is American, Dennis Tek.
Love radio birdman
not lead guitar, Chris Masuak was lead
Lime Spiders - Weirdo Libido or Slave Girl
I was there.
I fell over Rob Younger at an Iggy Pop concert.
Australian Surf Punk at its best 👌
THIS IS 1973/1974!!!!
Spy v spy, credit card , these guys were mad lived upstairs it was very intetesting
Radio Birdman are basically Surf Punk. "Aloha Steve and Danno" would have been a good choice.
Radio Birdman are much more than that, The Hand Of Law is nothing close to surf, New Race, Do The Pop, Burn My Eye, what the hell have those songs to do with surf 🤦
This is one of the best rock bands ever, no stupid label suits them
They definitely had that in them!!! They used to cover Surf City by Jan & Dean, & California Sun by the Rivieras!!! More Fun is totally a surf song!!!
AC/DC Chisel Angels Birdman The Saints. Thats it. The Sacred Oz 5.
These guys were contemporaries of the MC5 who are one of the greatest Detroit bands ever.
they aren't contemporaries with the MC5, Radio Birdman started around 1974, the MC5 were gone by then.
The thing is that Birdman's lead guitarist, Deniz Tek, was hugely influenced by Wayne Kramer... don't mix up things
More Fred ‘Sonic’ Smith & Keith Richards, to a lesser extent Kramer!!!
you see that white Epiphone Crestwood Deluxe guitar that Deniz Tek is playing in this video? it belonged to the MC5's Fred 'Sonic' Smith.
@@stan1036 This made my day, that is awesome!
Deniz Tek from this band was American
Could be wrong , but I think the singer is American
The guitarist is, Deniz Tek is from Ann Arbor, Michigan
@@letstalk3265 thanks I knew there was a yank in there somewhere
@@davexenos9196 and a Canadian
Yeah, nah. ;) He's Aussie. Both guitarists are from North America.
In your dreams
