- Upper backs are one of the toughest things to learn in figure drawing. In this video, we break it down to simple, repeatable construction, and then use that to draw and light some examples.

I feel like David just gave everybody a lesson worth a couple of hundred bucks per sesh. Thank you very much for this video!
3 steps...
1. Open Sketchbook
2. Sharpen pencil
3. Learn from David, a Master artist.
Amazing tutorial!! This is what we needed and the title of the vid is awesome too!💪😊
I think you missed a step
@psylite6850 They did, first step is study anatomy to understand skeletal structure, placement of muscle, form and shape changes when muscles move, basic understanding of construction, and perspective.
Then step 2 is Open sketchbook and sharpen pencil and get ready to tear down and draw bodies and body parts for a few months.
Finally step 3 is learn from more than one artist.
You upload this at the exact minute I'm filling a page with Burne Hogarth backs. Synchronicity is real
Now my sketches will have characters with their back facing me.
Now my sketches will have characters with their faces backing me
funny aint it i tried so hard and never got so,, in the end i never improve. its like doing weights and never gaining. its like i work twice as hard as anyone. but its for not. i need a pros judgement/critique on my art vid..
@@pogz1 I'm not a pro but maybe this tip will help you don't work hard and start working smart, draw a sketch and check whats a problem in that sketch ,after that draw that sketch again and improve whatever problem your first sketch had and keep on repeating this process until you feel you are improving and once again I'm not a pro so this tip may not even work but you can try it if you want to.
@@OsamaKhan-we7xi thats helpful man thx

Alot of times I use the Arnold Encyclopedia to Bodybuilding as a great reference to all muscle groups and how the connect them to each other.
Yeah, I've used that for anatomy reference for years..great b&w shots of muscular anatomy
Arnold is like my go to guy for anatomy in general.
Drawing backs without refererence is real pain, back muchles is difficult to grasp ,you helping a lot, thanks.

Greatest back tutorial I have ever seen!
David Finch. Because of you my pencil makes love with my sketchbook. Literally.
Awesome. I just did a drawing of a back for the first time in my life 😅
I love that very simple approach to the upper torso at 6:24 --dividing it into two big masses. I could just keep it at that for a normal human body.
David Finch, you're one cool fella
Thanks David. Solid gold tutorial as always. Also that thumbnail with sad cape guy and happy back guy is fantastic.
This was quite helpful.
Thank you Dave ! This tutorial (like all your tutorials) is gold to us !!!
See ya on Monday ;)
David finch this tutorial helps alot because, Im having trouble with back anatomy because I'm to focus to draw front anatomy. So this tutorial helps alot. And for the next tutorial on kapes cuz I'm having trouble with that to.
My problem is solved. Thanks Dave 🙏👍
Never has drawing a back been so easy yet so hard. Thankyou David Finch. You have your art heros but what you don't realise is that you are a hero to me.
David é Foda! Tenho 52 anos, e grandes referencias são Neal Adams, John Buscema, ...e poucos outros. Mas você, você é um dos mestres!
All of a sudden I just though should study back muscles and you upload a video about it. Thanks
What a helfpul video! i know i said it before, but I don't know where my art would be if you didnt do these tutorials, Dave!
Thanks david finch! I really wasn't interested in marvel comic but you got me into it! It was also an inspiration for drawing
I’ve never wanted anyone on RUclips to get to the Millions Subscribers than Dave! Such a Humble Legend like him deserves it🙌🏽 I try to send everyone I know interested in Art his way but I always remind them “YOU BETTER SUBSCRIBE IT’ll HELP HIM OUT!” And if it helps him out then as a bi product we benefit as well 🤔🥳
Thanks for an other excellent and very helpful lesson Dave!!! I always look forward to your videos.

Thanks for the tutorial Mr Finch!!
anatomy is like me trying how to fly.... my brain just cant take it. lol can you critique my art vid pls. it just my never improves even if i try so hard
Well you need to practice...like a lot
It took me exactly a year to get my muscle structure better ....and im still learning...you just need to practice by drawing your favourite character from your favourite artists and analyse how did they draw the anotomical structure....
Awesome tutorial as always Dave. 🙏
Wow! fantastic, I grasped so much from your explanations in so little time! Thank you!
Dave I can’t tell you how much I appreciate these videos. I have wanted to draw like my favorite comic artists since I was young and saw characters like Batman and Spawn and Wolverine. I don’t have the ability to go to school for this but I watch these videos a lot
Thank you so so much for making this video!
Yo Dave!! Please do more of these this video is super helpful 🔥

Great tutorial! That Peter Griffin laugh was hysterical! 😂
This is very helpful in learning the proper structures of backs for characters.
Dave this is a tutorial best and helpful for artists .
I like it.........
you are great teacher.
Me encanta tu contenido David finch
Hell yeah, thanks for this tutorial!!
David thank you
Thanks for doing this. This definitely an area that is difficult to study, but I think my understanding has gotten a little better by looking at the work of various artists including yourself. Something that did frustrate me earlier are the muscles (there are about three of them) that go over the scapula, because depending on the person they are either very prominent or not there at all, and you just see the scapula bone sticking out. Usually on women. Side note, it's really amazing to me how John Buscema or I guess Mike Deodato can use their rending/scribble techniques in the right places, and just by doing that they can make a back look very believable. Remarkable.
Any examples in particular of their scribble technique?
Wow 🤩 this one was so great, nice details and shapes on backs.
Can you make another gesture tutorial?
Its really help
Could you do a tutorial on not so ripped guys? Like a comparison video between the two different body physics?
Really glad subscribeing the channel👍
Awesome tutorial ! Thanks for sharing your wisdom
Thank you David. You may not know, but you help me a lot 😉

E essa lapiseira com adesivo é mágica
Very good!
This is advice for Dave Finch!
Super class
Hey David, your art is amazing, and drawing along with your streams have been some of the most fun I’ve had drawing in a while. I was wondering if you’d consider making similar anatomy videos for characters without such heroic muscular proportion? I know that in comics there’s so much variety in character design, from everyday average joes as well as superhero’s. Just wondering if you take a different approach when drawing more average body type people
This video made me want to work out 😂
Perhaps 1 day I would share the tear-drop shape of blocking-in the figure. Fast(time saving ). Quick(productive) Effective(multi-usage: comparative anatomy). Efficacious.
could you make a video on composition?
Those videos are always only about the rules of composition but never about why the artists chooses the one he does.
Guess what I'm trying to say, it would be nice to have a video about the thought process while designing the layout, instead of just the rules.
You are a god for
me god finch
Is there anything that Dave draws that doesn’t look like it should be on a cover?! I know he’s worked hard and dedicated his life to his craft and has more practice in than the average artist but it’s like even things he’s stated that he doesn’t feel confident drawing are phenomenal! I love that he takes time outta his BUSY career to bless us with FREE content to help us grow as artist, WHO DOES THAT?!! Wait til my Daughter gets home from school and sees he has a new video🤯🤙🏾 Thanks Dave, your family in our house🙏🏾 by the way you make it look so easy... Me: my figure looks like he has meatballs growing out his back 🤦🏽♂️😭😭😭
I’m actually bored with watching chests and abs. It’s absolutely refreshing to see the structure and beauty of back muscles. It’s like a whole other “unexplored” world. Thank you for sharing your content David!

Nice
Make one of theese with the base of the back and the way it conects with the hips
You are so cool👍
I think this every time I see one of your videos, but "Man, I wish I had this back in like '96 (yeesh, that's 25 years ago now!) when I was banging my head against the wall trying to learn anatomy!" :D Though, I had been feeling like I needed a back anatomy refresher, and was even struggling with a crazy flying side pose today, similar to that last shot you did, so this was still a huge help! Amazing as always, Dave! Thank you!!!
I really wish this types of videos was here years ago its almost a crime to not know this stuff
can you show us how to do different body type?

The thumbnail is jokes. He really is the greatest comic artist in my opinion
Would you make a video about porportions? It’s a big struggle of mine and everyone measures stuff up which kinda messes me up
