I always appreciate how Dave Grohl is just a guy who gets to play music. He has no airs about him, he is friendly, emotional, and having fun. I always think of someone taking a selfie with him in Michael’s craft store and he being willing to do that with his reading glasses hanging in the neck of his sweater. Just an awesome dude.

I like Grohl and the FF a lot... but no, he hasn't... at least not single handedly. He's certainly been the biggest mainstream artist to keep rock and roll alive, but it's always existed (and always will) in garages and dive bars, being played by bands who never "make it" because the US music industry is completely ignorant of what good music really is. They only recognise greatness when guys like Dave Grohl refuse to give up and and keep punching through to the point where record company and radio station executives can't ignore them anymore. Love that sentence. Currently, I am taking care of a 91-year-old woman and I have been taking her through a musical history of the 1940s and 50s and even with dementia, she remembers song lines. It is so fabulous.

I came back to Toronto in Nov 2002, heartbroken after a year and a half in NY with a girl I met from San Diego. Suffice it to say this song - and entire album - helped me through that painful experience. Perfectly timed release. The Taylor piece makes it all the more poignant these days. "... doubles as a four and a half minute therapy session..." Yes! So well put! Thanks for both sharing your personal story and this one, Adam.
Still can't hear that song without tears. Such an emotional song and Tyler's loss makes it an even harder hit to the heart. Grohl and Hawkins single-handedly brought rock back into my heart when I was giving up on the genre.
"Song for the Deaf" is the third album from Queens of the Stone Age, not their first. It was, however, their big commercial break though. Their self titled debut was largely ignored outside of the stoner rock underground, while their second album had a minor radio hit with the song "The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret."

Foo Fighters got me through the utmost hardest time of my life…Thank God for their music. Music has gotten me through tough times and amazing joyful moments. I saw the Foo this year and it was life changing…I finally felt like my old self again. Empowered, hopeful and finally happy. I’ve been following Dave since Nirvana… when I was a teenager. One of the most talented musicians of my lifetime, if not the most talented. His lyrics speak from true emotion. Loved this episode ❤
They've certainly gotten me through. I saw them in Buffalo in 2011. It was a couple of months after my father spent a week or so in the Buffalo VA for pneumonia, and he would pass on Valentine's Day 2012. So things were in a state of flux. That night spent at Dave's feet remains the best night of my life. He was so gracious. Krist Novoselic sat in on Skin and Bones. And Taylor. They opened the set with Bridge Burning, and things got real when Taylor kicked in on the drums. 🖤
I grew up on “lite rock” and have often gravitated toward more mellow styles of music, but I was working overnights and listening to the hard rock station to stay awake when this song was popular. It definitely was one of the more memorable songs that I associate with that period of my life, and one of the outstanding tracks that have been popular since the turn of the millennium. Really interesting song story.
I don't believe I've ever known a band to be bigger & more influential than the band that it came from, which was one of the biggest bands in recent history, a genre changing band in itself. I completely believe this is really due to Dave Grohl and the amazing band he put together. Honestly, I believed the loss of Taylor would end FF. His death was beyond shocking & heartbreaking. I'm so happy it did not but it's not the same. Edit: I wrote my comment before watching the entire video. Your video of Dave singing 'Times Like These' now was soul crushing. I'm at work and your video made me mess up my eye makeup 😢😢😢
Taylor's death still feels so raw and fresh. Sometimes I think it was a bad practical joke being played on the world and Taylor will pop up with that goofy grin and scream "GOTCHA SUCKA!!!" His death was senseless. Nothing else describes it. Addiction is a curse that takes so many great artists.
Taylor's death is on par with the death of John Bonham of Led Zeppelin. It was monumental and just as huge as Taylor's death. And both meant the same to their respective bands. That is way I was sure after Taylor's death it was over for Foo Fighters. It just felt the same with a band that was as bonded as Zep was with each other. Losing one was like losing a brother.
It was precisely the acoustic version of Times Like These that made me fall in love with the Foo Fighters music. Just Dave and his guitar, his voice and all the raw emotion. Got me through a couple very dark chapters in my life and opened a whole new world of great music to me. Thanks, Dave! Thanks, Foo!!
Thank you for covering this song and the Foo. Nothing I can say will be new or better than what you've outlined in this amazing video. Seriously awesome, beautiful and true. All the ❤ 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Born in the 70s, grew up in the 80s and burned like raging fire in the 90s and early 00s; Foo has been with me my entire adult life; an appendage, they are a fixture in the snapshot of my life.
I love your way of storytelling about the songs and the backgrounds of the bands. I also went through a break up when the song first came out. I remember playing this album over and over in my car on CD. I also remember the siding one day I was going to give the album to my brother, so I could ween myself off of all the emotions. I think I’m ready for the album again. Ty so much for covering this amazing band!
This song fittingly brought tears to Dave Grohl (as well as many of us fans) when sung during the Taylor Hawkins Tribute shows. Having lost many in my life... I find it a song that breaks me down and then brings me back up.
One of my favorite episodes ever Adam. I was anxious to get to the end only so I could tell you Times Like These was a game changer the first time I heard it, I never thought they would top Everlong and I'll Stick Around. TLT made me a genuine fan, just amazing, I crank this in the car all the time.
I just saw the Foos this past weekend at the Sea Hear Now Festival in Asbury Park, NJ. It was my daughter (23 years old) to see them, and they were great as usual, never heard any reports of them taking a night off when they do a show. The most emotional version I have seen was when they opened their show at Madison Square Garden on Father's Day 2021. It was the first concert at MSG in over two years, and it was just Dave and Rami. Dave broke down twice during the song, but once the rest of the band came in you knew that everything was going to be ok, and that we would put the pandemic behind us and to start to live again. Also a great cover was during the pandemic by the Live Lounge Allstars on BBC Radio, that included Dave and Taylor.
I got to see Foo Fighters in concert this summer for the first time. They put on such an amazing show, it was absolutely one of my favorite concerts. I read Dave Grohl’s book shortly after and I was so impressed with his tenacity and humor. They are a bright spot in modern mainstream music. You’re absolutely right we do need a major shakeup ASAP!
This album got me back into playing guitar & bass after a 10-year hiatus. I didn't look at the written music and learned the entire album by ear. I've bumped into Dave here in Seattle a few times and once got to tell him my story. We cried a little and laughed a lot.
I absolutely love this album and didn't know the story behind it. Dave and Taylor together on stage were fantastic. I like the acoustic version even better than the single. We all miss Taylor and his electric drumming. Rest in Peace and thank you for your music. More Foo Fighters professor they kept on rocking us even as rap took over.
@@ProfessorofRock Sorry for crashing your conversation here but my suggestion would be " the Pretender". And while you´re at it, maybe mention how they trolled the Westboro baptists and/or how the played with Rick Astley? (How they RicRolled the WBC...😅😅)
When my best friend passed away, the acoustic version of "Times Like These" was one of the songs played at his memorial service. His brother, his wife, and I selected it not only to be played at his service, but also as the lead song of a memorial CD which was compiled by the three of us. I always think of him when I hear this song. Thanks POR , love your channel!
Story of my life the last 5 years - had to face and navigate all the negatives and still push through - no giving up. All new meaning to reset and start again. Absolute poetry ! Thank you Professor ! Thank you Foo Fighters ! 💪
Foo Fighters has been one of my favorite bands since the 90s. They have been a light in a very dim music era. On top of it they are just simply brilliant.
Times Like These was our high school graduation class song. I performed the acoustic version with a friend at graduation. Good memories with this song. Edit: Glad you said mainstream. There’s still AMAZING music out there, you just have to find it.
Great episode, thanks so much for doing it! It was great to meet you at that Foos show and crazy to find out we grew up 20 minutes away from each other! Keep bringing the goods! 🤘
I LOVE the Foos. I've seen them twice in concert and listen to them daily. Their song 'Resolve' has gotten me through some pretty hard times. Hawkins' death broke me, I still tear up when I think about it. Dave and the Foos are definitely keeping rock alive and bless them for it. Times Like These was also covered by Glen Campbell in 2008 and it's surprisingly soulful.
Love the Foo's bought their first CD back in 1995..." I'll stick around, I'll stick around, and learn from all that came from it." Anybody remember that one? Times like these reminds me of 911 but I love it . DG legend ✨
FINALLY!! A Foo Fighters entry! This band has such a long and interesting history that there should be no shortage of stories! Plus, their catalog covers everything from Disco to Death Metal--and a whole lot in between!
For me this song will always encapsulate that decision to leave my home town in my car, go to college, and change my life. I have NEVER regreted that decision.
Once in awhile I'll see a comment on some vid that criticizes Dave for some off the wall reason, but I don't understand ppl putting him down...the man has kept rock alive these past couple decades. I still say he deserves massive respect for all he has done..and continues to do!
Great episode Professor!! I saw the Foo Fighters last weekend (Asbury Park), my second time!! I truly thought I'd be a puddle the whole time because I cry when I hear this song, along with Everlong & Rescued BUT Dave was so happy & smiling the whole time it was infectious. No tears here, I screamed & sang along!!!
Foo fighters are that amazing combination of classic 70s garage rock with 90s grunge and a touch of power pop and 28 years later this band keeps on getting better and better with each album they release
Saw the Foos live here in Maryland at Merryweather Post Pavilion (the same place where Jackson Browne recorded Running on Empty) in 2018. The best concert I've ever been to. And I've seen Rush!
Lucky to see them do this track at the Albert Hall in London for a TV special back in 2017. I'll never ever forget it. Its a terrific single and one that has taken on a life of its own now.
We saw the Foos in Milwaukee this July at a festival, and it was such a great show! I had to go watch the vid I took of this song because he's wearing the same Breeders shirt and I thought maybe you'd been at the same show (footage doesn't match, sadly). Thanks for the daily music fix, Professor. 🤘
Slight correction: Songs for the Deaf was not QOTSA’s debut. It was their third (and best) album and Dave had a big part of why that album was so great. That aside, very well made video as always!
@ProfessorofRock if you are going to start down the Corey Taylor road, you need to do songs like "Through Glass", "Gone Sovereign/Absolute Zero", "Song #3", and something from Slipknot (pick your favorite). His new solo album has some great songs as well.
I'm one year older than Dave grohl and was there at the beginning of all this... I stopped listening to music in 1994 and ended up moving to Europe in 98 and lived in Belgium until 2011....i played in bands etc. but I didn't listen to anything except for local music... Yet every song that I was drawn to, that I heard on the radio, turns out it was a Foo fighters song.... And almost every time I listen to a Foo fighters song or an album, the lyrics, the music al became an emotional experience describing exactly what was happening my my life....freaked me out. Inspired me...made me rage with tears of joy..... I Haven't seen my son for over a decade, he's eighteen now and a drummer and we've bonded over the Foo fighters... it's kept our relationship ALIVE.... Also... I would literally not be alive today if it wasn't for Dave grohl and the foo.... I spent so much time watching RUclips videos in The last 5 years 90% of which was Dave & Taylor .... I felt they were friends..... I'm still not over Taylor no longer being here.... And there's no way I could ever say thank you to Dave enough..... And to you sir for your channel here..... I've been listening for a long time and the education I've received here is unlike anything I could ever have dreamed of having,... I am grateful and I'm a loyal subscriber.. and fan ....thank you sir for this form and for this particular video.... Keep them coming,... Thank you.. Rock on....- Corky
'Times Like These" is timeless. "Times Like These" is a song that could have shown up in the 70s and early 80's the greatest era of music. I grew up in that era and their was an optimism in the music even in songs of heartbreak. "Time Like These" like many songs form that time tells a timeless story that everyone can connect to.
One by One is my first Foo Fighter album and I love it to bits. I bought it after my friend put "There's Nothing Left To Lose" on repeat during a school camping trip.
I've fought alongside the Foo twice. Once being when Dave's foot was broken and he sat upon his Throne of Rock. I'd have to say Foo Fighters and Queen with Adam Lambert were the best all-around shows.
"Desert Moon" was a great nostalgic song. I agree with what Dennis DeYoung once said that the song would have been a top 5 hit, if it was a Styx song. But I get the feeling that Tommy Shaw and JY would not have wanted to record it. As far as music goes, 1980 is my favorite year. 1983 and 1984 would be my next two favorite years.
I could never get into Foo Fighters. I respect Dave Grohl for his music ability, the way he persevered for his fans when he broke his ankle at a concert caring for his fans and his other various musical activities but I could never get in the Foo Fighters as a band except for a few years ago when they did the Bee Gees covers. I keep wanting to like the band but to this day I have not found "the song" that makes me a fan. I have no problems with the music, it's just not for me.
Im a 53 yr old "FOO" fan lol raised both sons following Dave and his bands.. Both sons are grown now and they've got my grandkids loving Foo Fighters too. Dave's passion for rock and roll is intoxicating! My boys have always told me "Pretender" is a perfect explanation of me lol (legacy pain patient for 17 years #rsdcrps) and "HERO" is my song to them and my 81 year old Vietnam Veteran dad..
Foo Fighters are certainly one of the most important bands of all time, and I meant that with a grand sense. So timeless, still going strong today! They have certainly faced tragedy in ways more than one, and the music that is provided is an absolute reflection of that!
@@ProfessorofRock As much as stories from their first 3 albums would be a great watch, I think something from Wasting Light would be great! Walk, Bridge Burning or Rope. The band was in a renaissance of sorts-with deciding to eschew all of the digital recording tools and go back to analog tape. This album sounds amazing from beginning to end, and the Back and Forth documentary from this album is a MUST SEE. Speaking of this album, did you and Butch Vig ever discuss his production of the album?
I'm thoroughly coming to realize that I've never really connected to the world. I used to think I was an 80s kid, but after hearing your reminiscences I realized I was later than that, so I thought I was maybe a 90s kid, and realized I grew up too early for that. I was very poor, so I didn't experience so many things that average kids did. Not like now, even very poor kids have cell phones. So I thought, maybe the 00s was my time as I was making my own money and really starting to experience the world, yet, nope. Looking up that decade I don't connect to much of that. I'm starting to realize that I've just skipped through life like a stone on a calm lake, never really sinking in to any part of the culture. That explains a LOT about me. Thanks for helping me uncover this revelation about myself. I've noticed it for years, and could never put my finger on it, now I can, thanks so much bud.
There's really not a bad song from Foo Fighters. They were going to play at our place in Oregon but when Taylor Hawkins passed away it was canceled and rightly so 😢 IMO they're the last REAL rock band.
once in a very blue moon I catch the acoustic version on the radio, and I almost pull over (and have at least once) to let it play depending on my location
Amazing episode! Thanks Prof. One thing though, Songs For The Deaf was QOTSA's 3rd album, not debut. I'd always wondered how Dave had so much time to work with them. Now I know. I knew about Taylor's H scare but I didn't know it was at that exact time.
Times Like These is the best underrated song I have ever heard! Hands down! That it wasn't acknowledged is the sad part, it was beautiful and yet it was overpowered by crap! I don't see a song like this coming across again, it may be the last of its kind. It was that good!
Being the boss can be rough at times, being the drummer in a band I imagine can take the pressure off. I'm so glad they found the inspiration to cary on. 🤘
As a musician myself, Times Like These is a song I've dreamed of covering but can't get through it without crying. Add it to a very small handful of songs I would never attempt on stage. Dave Grohl is one of my absolute heroes!!! Damn, son!
Having a little jam with Dave Grohl in his studio is actually on my bucket list, but I'm running out of time so it's not looking good. Can hardly wait until I get a few minutes free to watch this. Thanks again, Adam.
@@AI-Consultant Yep. It happens. You get old. Shit falls apart. LOL Turned out to be a false alarm, but if you'd asked me last Sunday, I'd have thought I wasn't going to last out this week. But you guys are stuck with me and my musical opinions a while longer it seems. LOL
7:28 Now THAT is how Coachello used to be, until it was hijacked by I-Heart Radio corporate-type garbage. Look at that lineup: Siousxie & the Banshees, Prodigy, Paul Oakenfold, Tiesto, Groove Armada, Sasha & Digweed. . . great stuff!
I saw the Foo Fighters in 1997…Irvine Meadows. They started the gig with Dave at one drum set…Taylor at another…the show opened with a drum battle between the two…it was epic!
Songs for the Deaf is the 3rd album though. Interesting video though. Queens of the Stone Age deserve their own video. One of the most unique and consistent rock bands of the last 25 years!
Great band, great songs, still going 🤘As always I'm more nostalgic for their 90's songs, but from the album One by One I seriously love All My Life and this one Times Like These that is now 20 years old and still sounds timeless!
@@ProfessorofRock That's a loaded question because the 90's is vast and rich in music. Alternative bands like Gin Blossoms,The Smashing Pumpkins or R.E.M. The big punk 3 resurgence with Green Day, Rancid and The Offspring. I love the grunge era but also post grunge with Bush, Silverchair and of course The Foo Fighters .. I love the debut so much. New metal starting with Korn. Synth Metal band Orgy covered Blue Monday. Some great one hit wonders like Nada Surf- Popular Deep Blue Something - Breakfast at Tiffany's Dog's Eye View- Everything Falls Apart Music festivals like Lollapalooza, The Warped Tour and more Woodstock 94 more than 99. It was the last great decade in my opinion for Rock music in it's popular form. Plenty in this decade to keep your channel going another decade. I'm to much of a chicken to start a channel myself 😁
I've always been a strong follower of FF, but didn't know this story leading up to One x One. Times like These is just as you described, an absolute No.1 in Our Hearts. Thanks for focusing on this great song.
I've seen the Foo three times live. The Broken Leg tour, Sonic Highways tour, and the Disco tour. By far and away my favorite band ever. The Foo have helped me thru SO many tough days in my life. Dave's book is such a good read too. God bless Dave Grohl & the guys. RIP Taylor.
My brother is a professional guitarist and has been a paid, gigging musician for decades. He has been playing with a Tongan American bass player for decades and when he does gigs with him, they are known as The Afu Fighters because the bassist's name is AfU. So funny but effective.
I was walking the Camino de Santiago and was hitting a wall on about day 19 or 20. In the middle of an open plain called La Meseta, I broke my own rule of no music on the Camino (I wanted to be present with the experience), I decided to pull out my iPod and put it on shuffle. The first two songs were "Waiting On a War" and "Times Like These" by the Foos, and they gave me the strength to press on. Buen Camino, peregrino...

His life was tragically cut short. No wonder his passing is still raw in our eyes.
@@DianeLake-sw3ym I can't agree with that
It was precisely the acoustic version of Times Like These that made me fall in love with the Foo Fighters music.
Awesome
Thank you for sharing!
Definitely a masterpiece.
Videos like this are why I keep coming back to this channel. The Professor always gives special songs the props they deserve.
Gotta love Dave Grohl for keeping rock alive and well through his music, tributes and documentaries
Thanks My Name! What other Foo track should we cover?
@@ProfessorofRock Sorry for crashing your conversation here but my suggestion would be " the Pretender".
And while you´re at it, maybe mention how they trolled the Westboro baptists and/or how the played with Rick Astley?
(How they RicRolled the WBC...😅😅)
@@ProfessorofRock my absolute favorite is My Hero
@@robertpettersen3577 great suggestion Robert! Fantastic song!
I wish I had seen them together.
One of their best, easily! I love belting this one out when we have RockBand parties. Taylor is missed, love that the band continues on.
It’s a great one.
DG legend ✨
It’s a great line.
FINALLY!! A Foo Fighters entry! This band has such a long and interesting history that there should be no shortage of stories!
Plus, their catalog covers everything from Disco to Death Metal--and a whole lot in between!
Foo Fighters are my favorite current rock band. And Dave Grohl is such a wonderful person. He impresses me every time I hear an interview with him.
Thankyou for being there for me
That song, heartfelt, inspired, emotional, beautiful, so wonderful.
It's times like these time and time again.
Foo fighters are that amazing combination of classic 70s garage rock with 90s grunge and a touch of power pop and 28 years later this band keeps on getting better and better with each album they release
Perfectly said, and that's why they're "everlong".😉
@@laurat1129 love that and that song comes from my favorite foos album color and the shape love the video to
Great video as always.
Side note…”Songs For The Deaf” was QOTSA THIRD album…not their debut.
An absolute BEAST of an album though!
The best song from David is "From Can to Can't " with Corey Taylor. I can listen to that song over and over.
Amen! Good call. Should we cover it?
Same! I love that song so much!
@@ProfessorofRock yes, definitely
I will check it out! Thanks.
You made me cry with your personal video of Times.
I've fought alongside the Foo twice. Once being when Dave's foot was broken and he sat upon his Throne of Rock. I'd have to say Foo Fighters and Queen with Adam Lambert were the best all-around shows.
My favorite song by them is the Best of You!
SO GOOD!
@@ProfessorofRock That would have been a more entertaining episode 👏
Great song indeed!
I wish Dave would do a Ringo type band with 80s & 90s people.
Don’t forget about the emotional cover sang on the BBC by Dave and band with the Live Lounge All Stars during the beginning of Covid lockdown.
Good call.
We really needed that one.
I really love your insightful narration.
Listen to Let It Die might change your mind

Same here. Radiohead too. But I respect the hell out of who they and what they do, but I find their work as annoying as pleasant. I tried.
It still hurts. Great show thank you
Im a 53 yr old "FOO" fan lol raised both sons following Dave and his bands..
Saw you on the big screen at the show this summer Prof. Was a great show.
Foo Fighters are certainly one of the most important bands of all time, and I meant that with a grand sense. So timeless, still going strong today! They have certainly faced tragedy in ways more than one, and the music that is provided is an absolute reflection of that!
I agree. They are truly timeless and have made music that will last forever! What other songs by them should we cover?
@@ProfessorofRock They is quite a lot choose from! Everlong and My Hero come to mind quite quickly. So true about their prowess!
Absolutely.
They have overcome a lot while working hard to keep the music alive!
That was a really cool story Professor! Need to go listen again. 🤘🔥
Please do! Such a classic!
There's really not a bad song from Foo Fighters. They were going to play at our place in Oregon but when Taylor Hawkins passed away it was canceled and rightly so 😢 IMO they're the last REAL rock band.
Did they reschedule?
Very cool! I take it you've been to a game?
@ProfessorofRock no they didn't. Hopefully they will.
@ProfessorofRock oh yeah. I've been to several Blazer games, went and saw the Seahawks once and I've been to a couple of Oregon State football games.
I hate that it happened to you!
once in a very blue moon I catch the acoustic version on the radio, and I almost pull over (and have at least once) to let it play depending on my location
I was a DJ during the time this album came out. It was a huge relief to hear after playing the top 40 5-6 nights a week
I agree. Good observation.
I agree!
As a musician myself, Times Like These is a song I've dreamed of covering but can't get through it without crying. Add it to a very small handful of songs I would never attempt on stage. Dave Grohl is one of my absolute heroes!!! Damn, son!
The Washington Nationals radio broadcast plays "Times Like These" after a Nationals win.
Very cool!
As they should!
Thanks Professor 🌹🌹🌹
Great story man.
Big time props to FF.
Having a little jam with Dave Grohl in his studio is actually on my bucket list, but I'm running out of time so it's not looking good.
Can hardly wait until I get a few minutes free to watch this. Thanks again, Adam.

When Taylor passed away this was the first song I went to. You're right about the 4+ minutes of a therapy session. Great show today
Got to see them...Lemmy/Motorhead opened for them. Great show...think I still have the Morse code t-shirt!
Thank you!
Great band, great songs, still going 🤘As always I'm more nostalgic for their 90's songs, but from the album One by One I seriously love All My Life and this one Times Like These that is now 20 years old and still sounds timeless!
Agreed. Great record. What would you like to see from the 90s?
@@ProfessorofRock
That's a loaded question because the 90's is vast and rich in music.
Some great one hit wonders like
Nada Surf- Popular
Deep Blue Something - Breakfast at Tiffany's
Dog's Eye View- Everything Falls Apart
Music festivals like Lollapalooza, The Warped Tour and more Woodstock 94 more than 99. It was the last great decade in my opinion for Rock music in it's popular form. Plenty in this decade to keep your channel going another decade. I'm to much of a chicken to start a channel myself 😁
Great songs indeed.
Fun fact. The music video on the bridge Dave is wearing a shirt for The Sounds. An absolutely badass Swedish band with an absolutely badass singer!
Dang it, you got me all choked up and teary-eyed!

You should cover the criminally underrated Bob Mould! Husker Du, Sugar, his solo stuff. All amazing and a big influence to Dave.
