  • Happy Halloween! (I know it's early but it's all in the SPIRIT of things)
anyway, this clip is from "Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night". It may not be the scariest moment in kids movie history, but it still is quite disturbing (reference to Courage the Cowardly Dog episode "The Great Fusilli"). Sweet Dreams...

I think she was cursed by the emperor but it does not show it at the beginning and instead of running away Pinocchio saw her beauty and there must had been horror in her eyes as she looked at him turning into a puppet as if she was to say it’s a trap get out go. He should have left when the crowd did and get help. But Pinocchio knew he had power within him over evil and wanted to help her. In the end his victory against the emperor from his sacrifice for his father also freed her and they became friends how cute just goes show a kind heart always wins that’s what the fairy godmother said.

Its very interesting how everyone says Twinkles song is cute or adorable but its actually quite sad. The underlying darkness of “do what you want to/do what makes you happy” does not always mean you will be happy. Actions have consequences. I'm just seeing this for the first time a few years ago, but to be fair I can imagine this actually being more disturbing to an adult than a child. To a child it's just scary, the imagery is unpleasant and the mood shifts are more rapid when you're not listening to the lyrics of the song or understanding them. When you're an adult you pick up on more of the nuances of the ominous nature of the entire scene. We are also more aware of child predators and it's inescapable to equate this villain with one

Okay, I have to confess, this was really disturbing for a kids movie. Sure, the animation is a bit sub-par and the acting is kind of wooden. But I have always found puppets sort of disturbing, and the way they're used here is very much like in a horror movie.
But what really makes this dark is the associations. An evil old man who lures a child into his wagon and forces him to do things... While this may have been creepy back in the day, today it's downright horrifying.

If you have asperger's like I do, this is a full blown sensory overload. I'm a lot more sensitive to everything than others. This scene plays out like a scene from a nightmare. When I saw this as a kid it was in class and I had an autistic reaction where I started covering my ears and started letting out high pitched squeaks and shrieks. The other kids laughed at me (hardly anyone knew about autism or asperger's in the 90s) and I had to be sent home.
So don't judge people as being "weak" for being scared of this scene. Remember that everyone sees things differently. And honestly, I still feel uneasy watching this scene.

I'd say they've been anxious about going too dark since the results haven't been very profitable for them in recent past. Of course, movies like Pinnochio, Snow White and Bambi made it and today they are immortal classics. But Disney also has financial flops like The Black Cauldron and The Hunchback of Notre Dame to consider, who while not despicably bad movies, didn't find any big audience.
Also, I wouldn't undersell modern Disney too much; Pixar occasionally delivers distinctly dark moments, and while things hardly ever go into Pinnochio territory for the big D anymore, they do deliver more adult storylines.
