- This BMW M4 Shop Build by European Auto Source of Anaheim, CA, is now the most modified M4 I've tried. Driven back-to-back with Thursday's M4 build, we can see the subtle differences in execution between the two cars. This car is fast, fun, and crazy, but ultimately, it's tuned well outside of its own price bracket.

BMW carbon ceramic brakes on the M4 are an $8,150 option --- not $12,000 as this EAS guy said. I'll give him a D- for his product knowledge, he only escaped a straight F because he knew that he was in a "car".

The CC brake option on the m4/3 has always been $8150 in the US as mentioned by @skeetacr. EAS guy trying to justify on price a new vendor they sell. Weak.

We know it doesn't include headers. This is why Matt asked. The customer responded full, implying runners. Turbo back isn't an assumption, as an STI for example, requires headers, an x-pipe, uppipe, and that could mean EL or UEL headers and a combo of 4-2-1 the list goes on.

Tsar Kasm the guy doesn't know anything about the car, but in terms of the akrapovic it's typically referred to as catback or "full exhaust" which doesn't include the headers

I find that a lot with these high HP guys. I'm reviewing a 840 HP M5 and the guy (owner) seems very knowledgable, so that's a plus.

these are my favourite straight 6 engines.
Aside from the Rb26 I've driven and had fun in cars that have them. I had an old supra with a vvti swap for a brief period of time. I'm hoping this year I can put a 1j in my e36.

By the way, I feel like your reviews are pretty honest most times. That has helped remove some stigma about certain cars for me and has also brought me back down to earth on some that maybe received more praise than they should. Keep it up! I always look forward to your one takes.

I just want to say in defense of EAS, I had an E46 M3 in Switzerland, bought numerous products from them, and had a great experience. So much so, that when I went on vacation to California, I went by their offices to check it out and say thanks.

Matt - Of all the M4's I've heard out there, there is a combo I think that sounds significantly better than the others. It's simply aftermarket (cat-less) downpipes + stock exhaust. Seek out that combination if you want to hear the best sounding M4. Granted it's still not music, it's pretty great sounding, especially when you first fire up the car and it's running lean. This is the combo I ran on my old M4 after much research. Keep up the good work!

Not to be "that guy" but are you able to get a 6-speed manual M4, Matt? I understand it's based on what comes your way and your schedule, but every M4 you've reviewed [EDIT: that i have seen] has been a DCT example, (even the Dinan package, I believe) .. has anyone ever offered a stick one?
Keep It Clean I did review a manual. It was when the M4
First came out, and the car had Ceramic brakes as the only option. I cannot remember where the review is, but it does exist somewhere.

Unfortunately the more efficient motors get, the worse exhaust note they will have. Efficiency comes at a price and I typically love the BMW I6 sound.
fordrac1ng81 The GT3RS is making 500hp from a 4.0 Flat 6. (Very efficient) and sounds pretty damn musical to me

Blaming turbos is bullshit, AMG's 5.5 TT V8 and Audi's 4.0 TT V8 sound fantastic and to stick with I6s, even the N54/N55 sound better. This engine is just inherently terrible sounding lol.

This might sound lame to some car guys, but this is the conclusion I have come to after watching many of yours and others modified car reviews. I think most sports cars (not hot hatches and related), actual sports cars, are at the point where they're almost too fast to enjoy the full potential without a race track. I'm sure it's hilarious fun in a straight line knowing you could hit 200 mph on any given day. I'm not just agreeing with you blindly. I've been on back roads and I'm near all the best southern california back roads (la foothills, and surrounding) and I've been scared in modified S2000's with 300hp and great grip, MR2's, a couple of latest gen (not 2018) S4's, I can only imagine how talented you'd really have to be to exploit 600hp in that car. I don't think I'd live to tell about it lol.
Cool car, but I am really tired of hearing short shifting ass farts on some automatic 6cyl cars with exhaust like this one. I cant walk down the street anymore without hearing someone blow through 5 gears accelerating to 20mph with the car taking a shit everytime it shifts.
Is there a tally for how much all of these mods cost?
On the drive I never got a really good impression of how good it handles, or how well it puts down power. It seems like it's less sketchy (on power) than the last M4.
The real question is all those mods, and is this car really that fast on track? Faster than a Z06 (say with the upgraded radiator)?
Dolby 109 this car and the white one from last week I would say violated my "tuning out of class" rule.
For the money you have into a build like this you're deep into 991.2 C2S money, and that's gonna be a faster car still on the road and all but the biggest super speedway circuits. It will also ride better and be more forgiving with its better geometries. At a certain point you have to realize you're spending so much on mods you really would have been better off with a less compromised car out of the box.
Isn't your total going out the door getting into Mclaren 540c money? Maybe even some other cars. I follow a basic rule/guideline when it comes to modding, put whats rated at the crank to the ground. Typically that can be done with turbo cars very easily. It makes a great target to make a determination on balance.

car color is Austin yellow so a different angles it can seem more yellow or green depending on lighting and angle

I'm reviewing a a 840 HP M5 soon and that should be almost as crazy as this 600 HP M4. Either way those are big power #s to 2 rear wheels.
Matt, I'm not trying to be a d!ck, but you said in this video that you don't like how it sounds and I remember a previous m4 video you did where you said you like the new i6 sound because it was so unique and hated on. So which is it? I prefer the old i6 sound bc its refined and less tuner-ish

I've been to EAS before and they really are a tuner shop which is great when you want your car modified. If you want to shop that can work on your car for maintenance, I would probably choose someone else. After seeing this video I would be hesitant back.

Matt is knowledgeable and has a passion for cars. Salomondrin has a passion for money and he see cars mainly as investments. Sure it may be fast, but looks horrible [that COLOUR ugh] and sounds terrible. Many other slower cars I would rather have. Plus, the guy seemed to be there for insurance purposes only and didn't really know much about the car. A much slower E46 is miles better in every way.

While I agree the M3 does not sound nearly as good as some of it's competition [RS4, C63, Alfas with the Busso V6], the E46 is miles better than the new ones - which are so bad they felt the need to pump fake engine noise in the cabin.
enjoy your M4. I have driven both, and liked the E46 more. More visceral, more a driver's car, more connection to the road...and it sounds better.
I will not argue too much, however, because I don't even like BMW for the segment, I am an Alfa Romeo fan.
Again, enjoy your M4 - I am sure it is a blast. Just not for me - they have lost me since the early 2000s.

I was lucky enough to drive one recently. It is fantastic, everything I always wanted in a modern Alfa. It feels like a 4-door Ferrari. Shame no manual in N/A, or else I would be buying one.
Just checked Sparta does make carbon ceramic but like he said its probably for the best have the good old steel, unless you dont plan to use it on the road.

With this and the last M4 video you talk about power excess and not being completely useable on public roads. How would you compare this to OEM big power cars like the Corvette and Camaro that are also capable of 600hp/tq. Do the OEMs present a much more stable platform that more completely allows the use of high power, even with rwd (especially the Camero)? Would you consider the high power OEMs to be very similar in context, or is the BMW just a different platform that presents completely different character when using high output? For example, is this uneasiness a byproduct of the chassis or tuning simply not being capable or refined enough to deal with the power?
