    writing a song about the Spanish civil war and getting it to number one in the charts = the whole reason the manics exist

    • @rossdawson5575

      It’s more about the International brigade that was mostly made up off Welsh, Scots and Irish who for the right money fought for both sides.

    • @DrB81
      @DrB81 3 года назад +11

      @@marshallgraham1 You’ve completely missed the point of the comment. It wasn’t that the manics exist purely to write a song about the SCW. It was the fact they did that song which imbues the band with a special form of songwriting sensibility unique to themselves.

      @@rossdawson5575 I would think it was more for ideological reasons that the international combatants chose their sides, certainly for the Irish on both sides it was mostly ideology

    • @rossdawson5575
      @rossdawson5575 3 года назад

      @@thomasmcconnellogue5405 I was taught that most were mercenaries that fought for the highest bidder, yeah I’m guessing that you have a point but it was more about the money. Remember he had Hitler backing him. In my opinion, that revolution was the real start off WW2

    • @thomasmcconnellogue5405
      @thomasmcconnellogue5405 3 года назад +6

      @@rossdawson5575 fascism was on the rise across Europe, the left / socialists/ communists supported the Spanish republic, while right wing / fascists/ conservative and others for religious reasons would have supported Franco.
      Many of the Irish contingent were split along the lines of the Irish civil war. Over 300 IRA members went to fight for the Spanish republic, not for money, but because of political beliefs.
      On the other side a group called the Blue shirts went to Spain to fight for Franco. They had modelled themselves on Mussolini's black shirts and were overtly fascist. They went to fight for political / religious reasons also. They saw the (democratically elected I might add) Spanish republic as communist and anti church.
      Some of them fought against the IRA in the Irish civil war and they would be on opposite sides again in Spain.
      The Welsh miners that the manics are commemorating here went to fight for the Spanish republic against fascism and I would argue most if not all went for political reasons rather than money also.

    To play the song with passion and be heartfelt all the time thinking Allen is behind me no pressure, camera pans to Allen , Allen nodding along in appreciation, bradfield is a quality singer and great guitarist this gives me goosebumps.
    As an aside I dropped my change from a southern fried chicken stand in between bands at a red hot chili peppers gig in a side concourse at Wembley arena, the guy behind me helped me pick it up and turned out to be James Dean bradfield ( who likes John frusciante) we chatted for a bit while laughing at the rip off price of the chicken just a sound guy.
