  • In the summer of 2017 a group of community volunteers belonging to Waterford County Museum's Gallow's Hill Community Archaeology Project undertook a dig on what was presumed to be a Norman Motte & Bailey fortification on the edge of Dungarvan. This video by John Foley tells the story of what happened next. The dig was supervised by archaeologist Dave Pollock and archaeologist Kevin Barton did the geophysical surveys over the previous 18 month lead up to the dig.
Support for the dig and the prior investigations came from Waterford Council, The Heritage Council, Adopt a Monument Ireland , local businesses, local volunteers and most importantly the local community.
If you have an interest in Community Archaeology and wish to find out more, contact the managers of the Gallows Hill, Community Archaeology Project, Chrissy Knight-O'Connor or Eddie Cantwell via the museum.
