      @John Yeh My answer would not be as in-depth as yours, but I think the seeds were planted by Nixon. Ford tried as much as he could to fly under the radar after Nixon left office. Then when Reagan was elected, with some of the policies that he pushed, trickle down, under the table arms deals, etc., a true divide began to develop. With his 8 years, 4 with Sr., 8 with Jr., it grew exponentially. Then with the last administration it is now akin to the Mariana trench. Just my opinion.

    • @marybeth1644
      @marybeth1644 2 года назад +5

      We all dismissed Sarah Palin as as a dummy but I believe she sowed the seeds of the current Republican Party. Guns, God and control women’s bodies. Core conservatives thought McCain made a huge mistake in selecting Palin as his running mate. McCain realized that himself soon after choosing her. Core conservatives were not happy with McCains pick. McCain chose populism over substance with that pick. She was the Trump of her time. We should have been more cognizant of the effect her candidacy had. Republicans didn’t want her but they wanted someone just as obtuse and uninformed. They were pretty psyched when Trump fit the bill.
      Trump’s base reminds me of an army of Sarah Palins rather than one of George Will.

Now the Cons leadership losses started a new Party called the Peoples Paty who resemble themselves to the Trumplicans. Anti-everything and they are fighting for rights and freedoms to block yours. The green Party and the New Democratic Party which has been an opposition Party and fight for all our social programs and the wealthy not paying their share. The point being none of the leaders are leaders and they can't work together. Everyone thinks the other guy is corrupt and lying and their guy faultless. It's the people who need to grow up and stop dividing and becoming so tribal and closed minded to others views.

    Is “being in private life” so terrifying? It strikes me that there don’t seem to be term limits, and this issue an incentive to behave badly. The politicians who I like in my country come in for a cycle or two, they come in fresh and ambitious, try to make a difference, and then rotate out to other pursuits. This isn’t mandatory, but it does seem logical because they tend to be authentic when in the legislature and not exclusively focused on self-preservation. They do not want to stay forever. I think it helps that after two four year cycles they can retire with a full pension, but tellingly that is probably the right incentive.
