      @madfishdiva 6 лет назад +1

      Andrew Piorkowski Right. Only one of my Ameca males is displaying the bright yellow. I presume that indicates dominance or maturity.

    • @AndrewPiorkowski
      @AndrewPiorkowski  6 лет назад +1

      Mad Fish Diva The yellow color on the tail seems to be an indicator of dominance or full maturity. Small groups might only show one but larger groups have lots of dominant males.

    Just got my 5 young tequila today 2 males and 3 females from select aquatics and man even though they’re young right now they’re really fun to watch it’s like they’re always on the hunt always hovering for a moment then moving to hover and stare somewhere else. I’m really happy I made the decision to get them. I can’t believe they’re not more popular in the hobby and I really hope they make a comeback in there native waters. They seem to be doing great I drip acclimated them this morning but any tips on how to keep them healthy and happy I’d definitely appreciate. They’re in a 30 gallon that I’ve had up and running for about 2 years with some Cory’s a bristlenose and an emperor pleco. Decently planted. If my 40 gallon wasn’t already stocked I’d be getting even more of these guys lol

    • @AndrewPiorkowski
      @AndrewPiorkowski  4 года назад

      They are predatory & like having places to hide for ambush but also need some open areas for the males to show off. Keep them fed & they should do great! Best of luck!

    I just ordered a few of these from Greg sage at select aquatics. I’m really excited to get them they’ll be shipped Monday and be here at there new home in PA Tuesday. It’s real sad to think how endangered they are in the wild and I’ll consider myself lucky to have these little fish. The tank they’re going into has been up and running for about 2 years all that’s in there is a few rarer Corydoras a bristlenose and a emperor pleco and a lot of plants so hopefully they’ll be happy. Thanks for this video and keeping these beautiful fish

    Recently you have been one of my inspirations, along with other youtube channels like dendrochirus zebra. I was very interested in the easy ways of making planted tanks, like the walstad method, against the more costly high tech way, that commonly makes use of high performance chemicals for achieving a certain aesthetic style.
    The way you use minimal substrate and potted plants, in this tank for instance, seems to me now like the most efficient, easy and beautiful way of maintaining aquariums. Seeing your tanks and some other channels made it easier for me to “find myself” in a good place, figure out what I like and continue my effort of having aquariums that still is in its early stages.
    It has been nice to find in this activity people enjoying fish keeping in a way that focus on some kind of awareness and the small modest preservationist feeling that it can bring.

    • @AndrewPiorkowski
      @AndrewPiorkowski  6 лет назад +1

      lucas Stamford Wow, thank you so much! That was one of the first channels I subscribed to and someone I tried to emulate early on. I appreciate the simpler setup over high tech versions because I felt like chasing parameters wasnt sustainable. Fish do better with consistency and while the plants are awesome, the goal was to have healthy fish. Thank you so much again, it means a lot! :)

    They are beautiful. I love them to😃👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 But are you not worried that your flying fox should eat your fry?

    • @AndrewPiorkowski
      @AndrewPiorkowski  6 лет назад +1

      J.A-R.A FISHROOM They are incredible! There is a lot of confusion in the hobby regarding the "flying fox". These are Crossocheilus oblongus as opposed to Epalzeorhynchos kalopterus. The Siamese Algae Eater is a peaceful fish that I have had no problems with whereas the Flying Fox is closely related to Redtail Sharks, which are quite territorial and fin nippers. Another example of why I prefer to use scientific binomials over common names. True SAE are cool fish, you should check them out! Great at eating hair & diatom algae!

    Always delighted to watch your beauties. :) Do you know about any introduced predators living in their territory?

    • @AndrewPiorkowski
      @AndrewPiorkowski  6 лет назад +1

      Kroeger Markus One of the main issues facing goodeids is non-native introduced species. That in combo with the pollution in the area basically eliminated all goodeids from the location... Hopefully with a better idea on how to manage the area, reintroduction efforts will be successful! Thanks for watching!

    Absolutely love your videos. Between you and Greg sage you guys have inspired me to keep many species 13 type of goodeid now. My question is for the tequila split fin. How young can they breed ? I have two pairs of them and I would consider them to be maybe 3-5 months In age and the one female I swear could be pregnant.

    Any updates about the wild population? Still alive?
    I keep them with Rhinogobius. Works great (temperatures!!). But careful Tequilas are slower with eating than the gobies. Luckily the gobies only accept live and frozen food.

  • @eddyortiz8110

    Great looking colony as I was watching them I was wondering about how they would do in a outdoor pond tub? I think it would be fine and breed tons of baby's just a thought. 🤗👍🌿🍃🖤

    • @AndrewPiorkowski
      @AndrewPiorkowski  6 лет назад +1

      Eddy Ortiz Maybe but I worry about temp fluctuations in relatively small bodies of water outside. Might be risky now but maybe when the kids grow up I can put a pond in the yard to support a colony of thousands! :)

  • @TheBSideDJ

    Andrew, this is some valuable information. Thanks you for sharing !!! I bought a group today, but i'm wondering. Maybe my group are already all brothers and sisters, ... so are genes of the inline afterbreds very recessive, which leads to deformations and/or malfunction in organs ? Do you have experience with multiple inline breeding ?

    • @AndrewPiorkowski
      @AndrewPiorkowski  5 лет назад

      Fish tend to be a little more resistant to inbreeding mutations. Also worth noting, many of the goodeid lines have been bred from relatively small starting groups. While it is never good to lose endangered fish, deformed fish should be culled to maintain genetic health of the line. Also, good to find other with the same fish to mix up your bloodlines every few years. Thanks for watching!

    • @AndrewPiorkowski

      Hard, alkaline water is definitely the preference but they can be acclimated if needed. Most important is consistent water parameters. Thanks for watching!

      Apologies for my delay in responding but they seem to be most easily found in fish clubs or online auctions. The ALA Convention is also another great way to find obscure livebearers.

    Hi.. Im curious.. Can goodeids breed with different breeds of goodeids? Ik its a dumb question..:/ lol

    • @AndrewPiorkowski
      @AndrewPiorkowski  4 года назад

      Some species can but really only those that are closely related. Tequilas are one of 3 species in their genus, it is likely that they could but wouldn't cross with something like Ameca splendens. It is actually a fairly complex discussion.
