You shouldn't unscrew the crown in a wet environment (which would be a common reason for having wet hands) so it is probably not a bad thing that you can't, or at least that it ain't easy.
I'm getting this exact watch this weekend also is this watch really as good as a $1,000 watch 😎
Excellent Review. Great watch to mod. Ebay now sells sapphire exhibition casebacks for the Mako/Ray. Nice mod for a new look. They are also coming out with aftermarket crowns fyi.
@@kingadjust5422 What do you think??
@@leemoore9933 lol I actually changed my mind about getting the watch so unfortunately I can't tell you 😂 😎
Fun fact about the Orient logo : the lion on the left symbolizes the company, while the second lion symbolizes their dealers and partners. The crown that can be seen above the shield symbolizes the customer. In other words, the emblem is supposed to represent the Orient’s respect for its customers and the desire to provide them with quality products.

It's probably inspired by the "Orient Express" train logo.
My Orient Ray II will be arriving next week. I'm looking forward to it ! My "treat" for having survived Hurricane Ida, LoL. I Appreciate the info on the Orient Logo/Coat of Arms, as having spent 20 years searching for & finding my TRUE family CoA, I've developed an interest in those...
@@baronedipiemonte3990 hey that's nice to hear. Enjoy your watch as its beautiful~

Had mine for 2 years. Upgraded the crystal with a sapphire, bracelet with a miltat bracelet, and recently, due to heavy wear, upgraded to a bezel that accepts a SKX ceramic insert.
Basically I made a Kamasu, but it's a Ray. Worth every penny.

@Cuandoman Did you have any issues with the water resistance after changing the crystal? I’ve had mine for two years too and only issue is many hairline scratches on the abhorrent mineral crystal.
I bought this watch a year ago. I have put it on a nato strap and it has become my daily beater.
Solid as a rock, reliable and easily legible.
I would recommend this watch to everyone.
I've owned mone for 2 years and still love it. Punches well above its weight in value, especially sub $200. I'll have this piece forever. It's a win win scenario, which I can't say for other watches.
Enjoy!

I had new seamasters, aqua racers, and micro brand divers. The Original Ray brought me joy like no other. Highly recommended. I have a Ray II on the way now! Just goes to show that you don’t need to spend thousands to be satisfied. I would sell all the others and keep the Orient if I had to.
Touché. Agreed my friend. 😊
I've had this Orient Ray II for about two months now and really cherish it! It's a qality watch, eye catching but not too flashy. Holds up great at the beach and the accuracy is well within acceptable limits. It's probably the best bang for your buck diver in my opinion! Thanks for the video, it influenced me to give this watch its place in my young collection.
I like the way they placed a metal border around the day-date window. Nice little touch!
I’ve had mine for 4yrs it’s my everyday wear true work horse of a watch also might I point out the lume is just as amazing as it was the first day I put it on. In fact the lume shines longer and brighter than my Breitling Super Ocean ii 44mm
I've had mine for about 2 years now and I love it. The bezel does loosen up a little over time with regular use, but it's still stiff
I've been watching your channel for a while now and really enjoy your commentary on all your watches. My fav is the Orient Star Classic video and this one is really entertaining as well. I feel you have a gentlemen's style and pacing for commentary which makes it relaxing to watch. I'm already looking forward to the next watch video!
Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate that. Someone earlier wrote that they watch my videos in 1.5x speed (lol), but fast-paced is not my style.
Easily the best review of this watch I've ever seen on RUclips. Thanks for this
Just got this for my birthday... I absolutely love it
Probably the best value dive watch now that Seiko have moved their divers upmarket into the Prospex range. Absolutely love mine. Excellent review.

One of the best Ray II reviews
Thanks I appreciate that!
Man, you are Bob Ross of horology. It's a great pleasure to listen to your calm voice and on point observations. I know pleasures should be served with moderation but please do publish your reviews (of happy little watches) more often. A firm handshake from Poland!
Excellent and comprehensive review with excellent photography -- really appreciate you opening the watch up and talking about regulation and accuracy. You deserve more subscribers, and just got one! Look forward to the next one.
great review! i've owned this watch for about 4.5 years and it has been performing perfectly. i had a friend regulate it for me and it holds at about +/- 5 seconds day and i'm fine with that. The crown is a bit hard to grasp but no big deal and the bezel is hard to turn HOWEVER if the watch is wet especially under the bezel, it turns super smoooooothly, makes sense since it's a diver watch even though it's not ISO rated. I've only ever owned 2 dive watches, my Ray 2 and a Mido Ocean Star, the Mido was beautiful and a better watch all around on paper, however it's gone and the Ray 2 is still around.
Welp, I didn’t know I was going to buy a new orient any time soon but I just placed an order for a Ray 2. Thanks for the nudge!
What a nice and wide review, talks about all the points one need to know prior buying

I really enjoyed your other videos (particularly the Vostok ones), and it is great you've done another. Great photography and nice presentation 👍
I looked at one of these briefly in a store tonight. I thought it seemed substantially better than another Orient I compared it to. The bezel felt good. Bracelet seems ok, with a nice clasp. Fits smaller wrists really well. Can't believe how low the price is for some color versions of this in the U.S. ($135!?)
Hell yeah, god I love your watch reviews. Always highlight some well priced and great watches

Hi , I did a very nice review of the Orient Ray 3 on my Chanel. Welcome 😊
This is how reviews (for any product, not only watches) should be made. Kudos. Liked and subscribed
This is the first time I have watched one of you videos. Very well done and easy to listen to at work. I have considered this watch and appreciate your take on it. I have subscribed and liked. Thanks.
I have the original Ray I with the extra crown for the day of the week,. Even after many years, its still my number one go to watch.
Really enjoying your videos! Please keep it up. Captivating narration and thorough/informative reviews!
what a wonderful review! thanks a lot!
I'm a new subscriber and your review was spot on. And I had this watch since December 2017. And replaced the crystal with sapphire in January 2018. Using a 2.5mm spring bars with a NATO strap.
Orient will always have a place in my watch collection. The Ray2 is what got me into watches and that’s because I had a Milgaus before it that I sold.
Love the indepth reviews. I bought my first "real" watch a week ago. The Orient Maestro.

I ended up picking up a black ray II in large part due to your video. Awesome stuff
Nice! Hope you enjoy it.
I have had mine for about 6 months and I love it. Haven't had very many scratches on the cristal, so it might come down to manufacture differences. I took off the bezel and gave it a light coating of lithium grease and that seems to help. It runs a minute fast per week.
Ebay now sells sapphire Exhibition casebacks for the Ray/Mako. Nice mod for a new look. MoonFang is also coming out with a better crown.
Great video and very comprehensive overview. With the SKX out of production officially and climbing to crazy prices, this is definitely now the king of the budget diver segment (I see anywhewre from $115-$140). I've owned this watch for over year, no problems with the crystal and a solid performer. I upgraded the strap to a 316L stainless steel oyster style strap with solid end links, and it's just great - people definitely think it's a serious watch. I recently thought about selling it, but frankly there are few things that would really be an upgrade unless you want to go up to an Oris Aquis or Longines Hydroconquest.
It was a sad day when the SKX was replaced by a push-crown Seiko 5. Nice looking watch, but not even close in features.
i have this watch modded with a double dome sapphire crystal, coin edge bezel, sapphire pepsi bezel insert and solid link oyster bracelet.... looks fing amazing
Can you post a video showing it? Very interested in seeing it
I have the Kamasu, what was the price for the double dome sapphire, if you don't mind me asking. I may do the same with my Kamasu.
Wearing mine right now! Got it on a strapcode oyster snd I love it

Interesting view about the logo!
I enjoyed your review of the Ray II. I ordered mine yesterday after much review and thought, and I'm very much looking forward to it. I was thinking about the Phoebus, but the model I wanted wasn't available. But I think I'll be happy with the Ray II.
Such an excellent, informative and entertaining review! Thank you sir.
I have the Black one and I love it.
Excellent review, with thoughts about glass, adjustment, logo, history and all the rest. Thanks!
I agree with the crystal scratches as I do have a few on mine as per your description. As for the bezel, the paint on mine is heavily scratched (from 35 to 50) and I will be replacing the insert or the whole bezel some time in the future. I have no issues with my springbars either.
I have the same watch I put a coin edge bezel with a ceramic lumed Pepsi bezel and a jubilee bracelet. I am going to add a domed sapphire crystal to it next. Great watch.
I bought the ray raven 2. I’m not usually a coating enthusiast, but I’m loving it so much. Two months out, still getting more wrist time than higher value watches in my small collection

I have been using my Ray II since 2 years ago, I upgraded the crystal to sapphire and mod the bezel to sea dweller bezel style from dlw watch (it fits all sxk ceramic bezel insert mod).
Really amazing watch!
So you bought the sea dweller bezel and also a skx ceramic bezel insert on dlw? I would like to change bezel it’s the only thing I dislike about my ray. Thanks in advance for any info on this!
@@mikev1681 yes, long island watch, namoki, dlw, crystaltimes... they all sell the bezel mod for orient ray / mako I and II. it will fit seiko skx bezel insert. you could get a ceramic bezel insert for seiko skx and put it in nicely!! goodluck
Even tough I don’t even own a Orient I am addicted to them! Here in the Netherlands It’s VERY difficult to get one, and if you get one it’s 2 times as expansive then in the US (don’t ask me why). I really want a Bambino in 36.4 mm and I’d like a Orient star… Now this watch is added to that list!
Bambinos are a great value too, and such a classic design.
I have many watches. I agree with your negatives and have the Kamasu as well. After wearing both the Ray 2 has become my favorite. I love the downward slope of the bezel, the high polish highlights on the bracelet and the look of the smaller crown...also, no problems with my mineral crystal. And the lume rocks.
Can't wait till I get my hands om mine next week!
I love it .. ordering soon :) thank you for a great review and keep it going :)
Terrific review. Very well done with excellent photography and information.
This was my first auto some years ago. Still have it and still wear it. I modded the heck out of it. New bezel, new lumed ceramic insert, new AR coated sapphire, and new bracelet. It’s still under $250 all in, but looks and feels like much, much more. Agreed. The dial is a stunner. Agreed. The crown is a weak spot here.

An excellent review! Lots of effort and very detailed :)
Never knew abt the manta ray crown. Their shape always intrigued me. Thanks
Getting this for my boyfriend, he likes to swim but he said he wanted a waterproof watch that still looks luxurious but he hasn't had much time to find one yet. This is probably one of the best I've found for a reasonable price :)
I just ordered one new with all paperwork involved for 150 euros from a watch discounter. Can't wait to get it
I have few orients & they are rock solid watches.
Thank you very much for the careful and detailed review. One small point: when you talk about the date change, you comment that the day changes first to French, when it is Spanish.
That said, congratulations for the channel, I love it. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Spain.
Interesting comments about the spring bars. I own an Orient Excursionist GMT, which is a heavy weighted watch with a similar band. I’ve replaced the spring bars several times because they bend and break. I think it has to do with the combination of the thin spring bars, heavy watch, and most of the stress is placed near the center of the bars due to the watch band design.
I have the Ray II and really enjoy it. It has taken about 6 months for it to break in. The initial accuracy was plus 12 seconds per day but over the months of wearing it, it now is minus 2 seconds per day for the last month. So, I think it has settled in. One of the reasons I bought it was the AWESOME lume. It is readable 8 plus hours, so when I'm in bed, I always know what time it is. For me, that's a very important thing to know.
I love both the Ray II and the Mako II I have them both and they are very nice for the money. I am upgrading to a double domed sapphire crystal, coin edge bezel and ceramic insert. I will also upgrade the bracelet to milled end links with screwed together links.
I just discovered your channel, nice work! I have a blue Mako II with an upgrade sapphire crystal and Strapcode bracelet, and love it (despite the "12" looking a bit off centre). It reminds me of a Longines Hydroconquest, for significantly less of course. I also received a nice blue Kamasu today, and was prepared to sell my Mako II, but might hold onto it a bit longer (especially after learning the Kamasu's lugs are shorter and my Strapcode won't fit). Anyway, both are lovely. I'm going to try the Kamasu on blue Barton silicone and brown leather straps I have on order, and might forgo the Strapcode for this one and keep the Mako II. The Ray is a nice piece too, and your video helped me appreciate it more. Being that I already have an SKX009 (totally modded), a stock SKX173 (my fave), an SKX031 (Seiko Sub), an SKX013, a 7002 diver, and others, I should probably control the urge for the Ray. Nice background, by the way. Are you on the West Coast? Looks a lot my city of Vancouver. All the best and thanks for your well thought out and nicely delivered videos.
Best review I’ve seen of this watch. Lots of interesting new insights too. I can’t decide between this one or the original Mako 2 (not the USA). Love the look of both and the fabulous blue sunburst dial.
Another great video.
This is my everyday beater watch. I have the black dial which looks very similar to the Submarina. I was one of the lucky ones in so far as the movement is very accurate hence why it rarely leaves my wrist. If you're looking for an all-rounder Automatic in-house movement then this has to be on your radar. Pull the trigger you won't regret it :)
I watch a lot of watch reviews, many of them diver reviews. This is the first one I've seen in the water.
Thanks for a mention about the different models. It is a little confusing. Like you, I prefer the Ray II's rounded numbers. I have a new appreciation of Orient. Great vid.
Great reviews those of yours!
I have the orange Ray. Granted the smaller crown makes it harder to set. But it also reduces the crown digging into my hand. The bezel is tight but it is definitely not gonna get knocked around in the water. Overall it's a great watch.
I swapped out my Chrystal to double dome AR sapphire Chrystal. Looks so much better and the crystal is scratch resistant! I love Orient watches! I have a bambino 2 as well.
where can I find a crystal like that?
Id like to preface by saying I hardly ever leave reviews on videos even though I am an avid watcher on RUclips.
Excellent review my friend, I thoroughly enjoyed it 👍👍
Thanks I appreciate that - esp from a discerning viewer!
Great video, subbed! I have one and love it; I do plan to throw on a sapphire crystal as you are correct about the easy scratching, but it is a beautiful watch for so little money, I want a Kamasu and a Mako ii. It also looks great on a variety of NATO and leather bands.
I haven’t picked mine up in over a month, the second I saw this I I opened up my watch box and started setting it up like I just got it for the first time. It really is a great watch I just don’t wanna beat it up

This is an amazing watch. I absolutely love mine also in blue. It's on my daily rotation with my Citizen NY0040 and my Seiko SKX009J. All on rubber straps as I work in an industrial environment. My PPE seems to scratch up bracelets. Although all three have mineral crystal, the Ray II has a few scratches on it. It's also the dress-iest of the three so it has character. I own the Ray Raven II and I love it. I also own a Neptune, Mako XL and a Kanno. I likes me Orients 😂. The Neptune is a stunning watch for the price it's in the 400 to 500 CAD range but it's powered by the caliber 40N5A, the same movement used in Orient's Gen 2 Pro Saturation Diver priced over 1000 USD. I enjoy them every bit as much as my Seikos. BTW I live in Vancouver . Your video have a real BC vibe 😁💗
Crown has always put me off this one. Love the invicta though, despite the hate, at 70-80 in the sales on Amazon you just can't beat them. Nothing comes close in automatic.

Guys I got this GEM last week. I’m new to wrist watches and I don’t have deep pockets. This time piece is doing +1 seconds a day after a week of daily wear.
The rest of my collection is:
•Seiko SARB35
•Hamilton Khaki King
•Bulova Marine Star
All of which have a price tag four times as much as the Orient and none of them come close to the time of the Orient. Needless to say I just ordered a second one with a black dial.

Hello Wonders of Watchdom, I've had my orient Mao 2 for around 2 years, it's my beater and for my watch, the crystal is perfect but the bezel is starting to have some damage. Great review, keep them comming.
Mine has 0 beat error out of the box too. I was pleasantly surprised so it seems Orient is actually regulating the movements at factory.
There is several versions of the bracelet because my clasp is slightly different.
Ray II on Amazon for $130-$139. I did not want another Dive Watch but I could not pass the price and I love Orient watches. Very happy with mine. I do not have a small wrist and like a snug fit so it fits like a glove on the tightest setting. I can barely tell it is Blue except in very bright light at an angle. The crown is awful but I should not have to mess with it too much. I noticed that they have really cleaned up their movement from your video. The older ones look kind of shabby. The new one looks shiny and has their name on it. Very good touch. I am not going to baby it. You should see my 1980's SK Diver with the Plexiglass Crystal. Looks like it went through a War but is still worn.
Nice! I love to hear about it when people wear their watches and don't baby them.
Finally, now I know why they call it the Ray. Cool. I love my orange Ray II. Agree on all the negs, but my bezel has loosened up after 2 yrs of near daily use. I've been regulating mine of late, as after =/+ 10 sec since I first got it, it's now running quite fast. Finally getting past my fear of opening her up. I'm doing it by feel, so it's a great learning experience going through the process, especially since it's a fairly inexpensive entry level auto. In truth, I love it more than my $1,200 Marathon. Cheers
Damn ... wrote the above before I got to the part where you "don't recommend trying to regulate this watch," yikes. Here's the bit where I start my Amazon search for time graphers ...
A very comprehensive look at the ray 1st time iv'e seen your channel, no spring bar probs the issues iv'e had were on delivery gaining +25 daily ,the crown & stem failed within months (decoupled) & the occasional bezel jam, being the Kamasu no crystal issues. Since regulation its my most accurate auto running well within cocs parameters as or the crown/stem thing Orient parts are a nightmare to acquire ..the logical move would be to ditch the crown guards & larger crown, all that said its stilll one of my fave's.
I have two of these they are very very nice. It is certainly worth twice the price. The Orient Kamasu with the sapphire crystal that version would almost be a $1000 watch with a bigger crown a ceramic insert and easier to turn true coin edge bezel. You are also correct about the Invicta 40mm prodivers what a great beater automatic dive watch for under $100. I have more Orient watchs than any other brand in my collection but it is a love hate relationship they are all almost perfect if they would only listen to reviewers and customers and make the small needed improvements.
Excellent interesting very detailed and informative review of this watch.
This was on my list but I have a Casio Duro, 2 Vostoks, a Pagani Submariner homage, a Citizen Eco-drive, a Steeldive Captain Willard homage ... so now I think I will wait instead of getting this and get a better dive watch (Zelos or Helm).

Extremely well done video. Thank you. I am a fan of ORIENT. Unequalled price/performance ratio.
For many of their models that’s absolutely true! Glad you liked the video
@@WondersofWatchdom ORIENT has such a wide collection of models, that nobody can ever understand it all. They often come out with unnamed product lines which they name later in the process (e.g. Kamatsu, Kano) or change names (Triton which became Neptune). Even the so many different versions of the Bambinos...
Nevertheless, top quality, top price point because they do not spend money on lavish Advertising & Promotion such as events with stars. And as you mentioned it so preciously well: in-house movements. ORIENT is simply different.
I recently acquired a new Ray 2 Orange dial watch off Amazon for only $161 . It’s definitely an amazing 🤩 watch for price paid 👍🏻
Had one since 2017 still looks great works great
Love the video. I'm a big Orient fan and I like the fair examination of this watch. One thing I hear a lot is why wouldn't you get a micro brand homage for the same price, with supposedly better specs, and I guess that all comees down to history and what you're willing to do. But still, a fantastic watch and a fantastic review

Excellent review. Just subscribed. I looked at this watch but in the end, despite no handwinding/hacking decided to get the Mako XL. Better bezel rotation, and better crown grip. I will say, I've never seen scratches on the Orients I own, so possibly you got a faulty crystal. BTW, I'm getting +5 spd from the Mako. I do understand that it's a bit of a lottery in what you get! Btw, that second language is Spanish, not French...Vie, not Ven, an easy mistake.
Bought this watch 2 years ago and it's easily my favorite watch.
And yes I think you may have a bad crystal as mine doesn't have this scratch problem.

I love both the RAY II and the MAKO II I have both in my collection.
I did had issues with the springbars, the watch just fell off my hand two times. I admit one time was when I was throwing a guy out of a bar :)) I have 2 Ray’s and 2 Mako’s. I fitted slightly stronger sprinbars witch could be barely fit because the bracelet hole is very narrow. I rarely use the bracelets at this time, and I do have one Strapcode which is awesome. The crystal is very, very scratch prone, but I quickly replaced them with sapphire for all of them. Btw your videos are great, never missed any of them, hope you’d do more in the future.
I have enjoyed every single orient watch I've owned, including my Makos and Rays; but please, there is no way in the world that this watch could be a 1,000.00 watch.
Totalmente de acuerdo
maybe not... but there are watches over £1000 that aren't as good as this
@@tomu-s2075 could you name three of them?
@@jaime4022 Tag Heuer Formula 1 Quartz WAZ1010.BA0842
Longines Hydroconquest
Tag Heuer Aquaracer WBD1110.BA0928
@@tomu-s2075 ok. Now I know you are certainly speaking fanboy biased nonsense. Have you ever held any of these watches in your hand? I am no fan of tag, but the cheapest tag heuer is better than any Mako in any measurable way. This is a quartz watch, so U can’t compare it’s movement to the automatic one in the mako, but that being said, the quality of this watch’s case and bezel are far superior to that of the Orient. And by the way, a quartz watch is more accurate, and shock resistant than an automatic, so depending on what metric you are using, you could argue quartz is better. And if you think that the Mako’s movement is much more expensive to manufacture because it’s automatic, let me tell you that you’d be surprised as to what little difference there would be. What are you going to say next, that the Mako is better than a Tuna because of its quartz movement? I haven’t owned a hydroconquest, but I do have a regular 300m conquest which is basically the same watch without a bezel and... please you can’t even compare the mako to that watch. Longines itself, as a company part of the Swatch group, produces mid tier luxury level watches which are beyond anything Orient produces and that includes the Orient Star line, which are very good in quality albeit a bit overpriced at times at retail prices. Perhaps you’d be better served comparing Makos to Certina, Tissot, Hamilton, watches, but a Tissot sea star for example with a ceramic bezel, power matic 80 movement 300m for around 600.00 usd is a far better buy than a mako USA II (probably mako’s best) at 315.00 usd.The mako is very well priced at 300-350 and that is what it’s worth. Come on man, the Mako isn’t even a true divers watch, but rather a diver-styled watch. The only thing you can argue about The Mako, is that it is a hell of a watch for the price, but saying it’s better than watches costing in excess of 1,000 is ridiculous. That is unless invictas become that highly priced. By the way, an invicta (yeah, I know)89260B with a Seiko NH35A movement, at around 100.00 is a hell of a bargain and in spite of the stigma associated with this brand, in quality it is on par, if not slightly better than the mako.
