  • This is my first time ever listening to Pink Floyd's "Animals" album. I sat and listened to the entire album in one sitting, and split it into two videos: Side One of the LP and Side Two. This is part one, "Pigs on the Wing 1" and "Dogs".

Al's Vinyl Collection is my way of sharing my passion with the world. I welcome all, if you're an avid Vinyl record enthusiast or just a passer-by, come and sit with me for 15 minutes to talk about the golden age of music. A civilised format from a more civilised time.
I do not own rights to video, I do not wish to monetise the video - I just want to react to it to bring entertainment and enjoyment for those watching.

That was well worth the attention and effort you gave this. The joy on your face as various musical touches & textures were added really made it for me. I felt engaged by what you were experiencing. Additionally, I agree that our discussions on these videos can be respectful. With future listens, the music and the lyrics may strike you differently. Often we go on a journey with these rich songs.

"Dogs" is my favorite PF song. Nothing better than a duet with David Gilmour playing with David Gilmour. BTW, on tour for this album they took Whitey Ford of Everlast fame to play the duet with David.

On the (In The Flesh) tour in 1977, the backing guitarist was Snowy White. Here is a little anecdote about it:
The final night of the tour on July 6 at Montreal's Olympic Stadium ended with Pink Floyd performing a second encore of "Drift Away Blues" as the roadies dismantled the instruments in front of the insatiable audience who refused to let the band leave the stadium. David Gilmour sat out the final encore as he was unhappy with the band's performance that night.
Snowy White played a bluesy guitar solo in Gilmour's place for the second encore, while roadies get the equipment out,
Nick Mason was HILARIOUS since at the end he basically had nothing but his seat and one of his drums.

One comment at a time frome my perspective: that moment when one realizes that it's no longer a real dog but Richard Wright's organ magically synthesizing the sound of a dog is such a precious little thing.

I'm 55 years old, and for my 11 Birthday in 1979 my Parents bought me a white Sony Walkman. Is was a new device for listening to music back then for it played Cassette tapes, not 8 track... so I didn't actually have any Cassettes at the time. I was Walking over to my Aunts house to record some music on to a Memorex tape. On the walk over, at the end of my road, right next to the curb I saw it. Out of the corner of my eye was a Cassette Tape, with one word written on it... that word was "Animals" I was 11 years old and I had no idea what it was. I popped it into my brand new Sony Walkman and thus began my journey down the Pink Floyd Worm hole. I never made it to my Aunts house, I stopped on a rock in the woods and listen to that album 5 times untill it got dark. Today I feel like it was a gift from the rock Gods themselves... and for that I say thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I was so looking forward to Side One, and you didn't disappoint! Indeed we all have our own take and understanding of music and lyrics.
My interpretation of Dogs is that of an inscruopolous business man. Doing what ever he needs to do to be rich/successful on his climb up the ladder. Damn anyone else! Having worked for several companies since the 80s I can identify the Dogs in my life!
I also believe that Dogs are what we are "trained" to be. Im surprised you spent little time discussing the last powerful verse of Dogs. "Who was broken by trained personnel ", etc. Almost like Eclipse from Dark Side - but summing up the steps to create Dogs in society.
Really really looking forward to Side 2!

  • @flubblert
    @flubblert Год назад +7

Well done sir. You're absolutely correct in how subjective the meaning of these songs are. Even Roger Waters himself, who hates explaining his own lyrics, when forced to do so will often say what he THINKS they mean rather than giving any absolute meaning to them unless he's referencing some specific person, place or event.
It never occurred to me that Roger might be associating himself with the Dogs in POTW 2, but you may be on to something there. I've heard him suggest that Pigs on the Wing is a metaphor for a constant existential threat.. or enemy as you put it, that we must all always be on guard of lest we unknowingly allow ourselves to become mere sheep to the power structures that be. Good job! Appreciate the thoughtful analysis. Consider me no longer part of that 98%. Subbed!

"as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone" suggests to me that the aggressive nature of the dog persona creates animosity among those that were abused, and as this grows, it becomes the stone by which the dog eventually drowns. To me, the stone is more symbolic, rather than an actual stone that the mafia might use to get rid of its adversaries.

    • @davidgross990
      @davidgross990 9 месяцев назад

Ypur right, the bad blood that you bring on during your life weights you down like a stone. I'm pretty sure that they are prettyt much talking about the record industry and how they lie and take advantage of the artists. Syd Barrett and the music industry seem to be a reaccuring theme of Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and Animals.

I would recommend to listen to The Wall the same day. its only about 80 min not two hours. Its a very story based album where every song evolves the story and the feeling of the album in some way. So i think its important to listen in one go, but maybe where you stop every side or every couple of songs and talk about them as you always do and maybe take a break between them all. The music will draw you in, and would prop make you want to listen to it in one go.

I read somewhere recently that back in the day in London, when the number of stray dogs became a problem, local officials would round them up, tie stones to them and toss them off bridges into the river. This ties in so appropriately to the lyrics here, perhaps suggesting that this was the inevitable fate awaiting those that fit into the category of 'Dogs'. A horrendous practice that's hopefully no longer applied in modern times. I've been listening to this album since it came out when I was seventeen. Absolutely amazing to me and after reading that story that song has always sounded diffferent to me since. As far as the phrase 'on the wing' goes, I've always thought it refers to anyone or anything that's taken to 'going off' whether on a rampage or just springing into a spirited action of a self-motivated origin. Loving this Pink Floyd journey brother.

Excellent work. You can clearly see your enjoyment. Its easy to miss things on the first listens one is the word Stone recurs under the 3 middle tracks sometimes very quiet but recurs in sheep before the prayer.
Animal Farm is definatly one level here. There is the high pitch instruments liken to dog whistles, also if you listen to the drums especially in the intervals it sounds like a ticking clock, giving us the passage of time.
Another level it can be interpreted as the music industry as themed in previous albums if the album is talking about that theme then we can say that "Pigs on the wing " at the beginning and end (this works for societal distopia too) is being at home with family sheltered from the industry (A dog needs a home), even though its a little boring not performing (note the line in Dogs "Was only a stranger at home), it also sounds like the only sane piece of music and can be looped pt2 to pt 1. If we take dogs with this these are the artists leading the pack, making money for the Pigs, chained by record label demands, being overworked and cast away when getting old, being chased by debts, overindulging as getting cancer. The stone in this context apart from medical (gall and kidney stones) can be seen as the music calcifying as the creativity (blood) becomes soulless and worn out. when people say your music isnt as good as what you used to make.

I'm not so sure I'd agree that it's a big change of direction for Floyd here. A bit of a harder edge maybe, but I think I've seen it referenced that was an answer to the backlash they were getting from the punk movement of the day. Pink Floyd used to tour new material prior to committing it to an album. This song, originally titled You've Gotta Be Crazy, along with Sheep, originally titled Raving And Drooling, were written and presented in their 74 shows along with Shine On You Crazy Diamond.

Put this or any Pink Floyd record on. Go find a bean bag or deep leather couch, put your headphones on and sink down into your chair, close your eyes, sip away the final drink, and let the music sooth your soul !!!

I’ve watched a lot of these Pink Floyd reactions from different youtube reaction channels. One thing I have come away with is this. A lot of artists will make these guys take their videos down or block them. So the reactors are forced to pause the music every so often so that it’s “legal” to use.
The guys in Pink Floyd, as far as I know, are not at all concerned with this. Every Pink Floyd reaction I’ve seen is a complete play through. Even this here. Playing “Animals” all the way through, and I guarantee you will not hear from Pink Floyd’s reps about taking it down.
Hell, they didn’t even bother to sue Andrew Lloyd Webber for blatant plagiarism in The Phantom of the Opera.
As for your comments on “Pigs on the Wing”, it is a love song that bookends this album to show that even with all of the ugliness that is “Animals”, there is still love in the world.

Rather than gangs, I've always thought that the "dogs" were the corporate soldiers (competitive business people). The stone being a millstone; a metaphor for the weight of ethical price of doing the work of the overlords. Also, it's my understanding that historically, actual working dogs (sheep dogs, etc.) when no longer productive (obedient)for whatever reason, would be drowned by being tied to an old mill stone.

Experiencing Pink Floyd "Animals" has been a lifelong journey for me. I'm overjoyed that you have taken upon yourself to delve into the album in its entirety. I've never been confident enough to draw any firm conclusions from the many parallels between humans and animals bases solely upon the lyrics in this album, but however they may blend, my thoughts and those of others including the artists themselves, will vary from time to time, which lends itself to the idea that we are all borrowing our thoughts from the same universal bank of knowledge that has been there since the universe was formed. Everything is an illusion.

I would just say that you sort of have to put the whole album in perspective. I understand why you did Pigs on the Wing Parts1 and 2 together, but to really get the deeper meaning of why they're there in the first place, and why they are bookended on the album, I think you can get there just with the help of the song "Dogs." It's pretty clear that Waters is breaking the world up into 3 distinct animals, Dogs , Pigs, and Sheep and the `narrator` of this little story, fancies himself a dog. Then you listen to dogs and you're thinking, "well that's horrible! I'm not like that!" Refer back to Pigs on the wing ..P1 "If you didn't care what happened to me and I didn't care what happened to you, we would zizag our way..." BUT P2 "I know that you care for me and you know that I care for you, so I don't feel alone, or `the weight of the stone`" If you take that idea into the rest of it I think it'll make more sense.

    Floyd Council
I've been a fan of Pink Floyd since 68. So naturally when they showed up in our state for the in the flesh, AKA animals tour, we went.
They had a large Pig they flew around the Coliseum. The second time was momentary lapse of reason tour. In that they played mostly all of Animals, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish you were here and Metal. And a little bit of everything else. The concert lasted for hours. Then at the end of that sell out concert they announced they would do a Encore the following night. It also sold out within hours. Likely was the largest traveling music production of all time. It was billed so at the time. Needing well over 50 semi trucks just to move the equipment.
I don't really have favorites, any Floyd will do. I don't mind.
For something a little different; Wooden Ships by Crosby Stills and Nash.

At that last concert they were in a baseball stadium I'd see another acts like Blue Oyster Cult Black Sabbath perform together none were ever asked to turn their sound systems down it seems they were far too loud the first night and they were asked to turn the music down for the second night. The music was actually heard within Sky Harbor. Drowning out Jets? Neighbor said they could hear the music outside. We live nearly 40 mi away.lol
