  • This video is for beginner students in historical armed martial arts and anyone else who is interested in the bio mechanics of sword fighting. It's about core engagement, the most fundamental way to increase striking power and transfer more kinetic energy.
It also helps maintain good edge alignment when cutting tatami mats for example.

Generally having a stronger core is bloody useful in everyday life.

    • @Hathur
      @Hathur 4 года назад +24

Of course, but his (Correct) point is that core strength is more relevant than arm strength. You can have weaker arms but still strike harder if you have superior core strength than someone who has primarily focused on arm strength. This applies in almost everything, such as baseball. A batter with excellent core strength but moderate arms will hit a ball harder than someone who massive arms but only a moderate core because the core strength plays a larger role in delivering energy.

Core is also vitally important because of movement on one's feet (or on the ground while grappling, etc.). Since we don't practice martial arts in stationary positions, the ability to move and stay balanced while fighting is paramount. This will also enable one to brace against impacts better, resist takedowns, and more.
Core strength and flexibility is a key component to any martial art.

It looks like he's wearing a sauna suit under his sweater. Their basically thick clothing shaped garbage bags. It makes you sweat more. He could have multiple layers if he's cutting weight. In wrestling we would wear a t-shirt as an inner layer to wick away the sweat so its not cooling you down. A pretty terrible way to loose weight actually. You mostly just get dehydrated and the excess body heat makes you fatigue way easier so you get a less effective workout them if you weren't wearing it.

Judo/jujitsu here - yep power for strikes comes from the legs, but depending on the strike also from the rotary motion of the hips and rotary torsion of the spine.
To a Boxer I would say that the power for hooks and crosses come significantly from rotary torsion (hips & spine) rather than from the power of the legs.
Side note: Back when MMA/UFC was a new thing I enjoyed fighting boxers and I learned how to punch from you guys (because boxers ARE the best punchers) - It was a good time because there was a such a wild difference in techniques. Happy training and good luck in any competitions.

It's pretty amazing how much more power you get by engaging your core muscles in almost anything. One way to string or unstring a longbow is to step through the bow with one leg, brace the bottom limb against your ankle, let the middle of the bow rest on your posterior/thigh and pull the top end towards you. If you try it with only arms its incredibly difficult, but by simply twisting your hips and core you can pretty easily safely flex the bow enough to string it. You just gotta use your mass to your advantage.

Thankyou! I'm currently studying Animation and I have to do a sword wing for one of my assignments in Maya so this really helped with knowing the proper form and not just swinging the arms! Thanks again :)

A little late, but in other words, you swing with your whole body, not just your arms.
If you need another example on what he’s talking about, look up how a batter swings in baseball.

THIS is the BIG reason warrior women in ANY genre they appear in need to be muscle babes instead of gum-sticks; they NEED a strong core in order to do ANY of what Skall demonstrated EVERY BIT as much as warrior MEN do, so if you want to portray warrior women realistically in your fantasy setting while still having them look good, they NEED to be MUSCLE BABES.
And by the way, not EVERY muscular woman is a muscle babe; muscle babes are the ones that still actually look like WOMEN with all that muscle. There're ALSO women who end up looking like MEN when they have it; those're she-men.

It's just like in boxing. People who don't know just think it's all about your hands, arms, shoulders. But the solid, powerful, REAL blows are from almost your entire body working in unison.

  • @Plusle843

Simple stupid, basically. Even if you PUNCH, wiht an EMPTY ARM, you also need to move your shoulder, torso and hips to give your ARM more power in relation to the floor. All you need to know is how to move your body to increase the hitting strengh with different weapons. They all require you to move differently, but move all your body all the same.

In kickboxing we're taught to kick with the rotation of the hips and body. We're told the leg is just a club. Same concept with the sword I guess. The arms and sword are just a club, you're basically striking with the rotation of your body.

I don't know if you read your comments, but I'd like to ask a question to you (and any of the many educated readers scrolling aimlessly through this comments section). Why do HEMA practitioners walk by pushing off in a direction? It seems much more exhausting and harder to control than normal walking. The manuscripts I've read show the wide, low stance and the last step of many techniques, but I'm curious where modern practicioners got their movement from.

Need a workout? Try the 1000-cut challenge! Start by doing 100 cuts at a time, with a goal of 30 seconds to 1 minute breaks between sets. As your fitness improves, increase the number of cuts per set, and/or shorten the breaks.

Most professional warriors wouldn't have 8 pack abs. They would look like strongmen. They only reason boxers/mma fighters are ripped is because there is sanctioned cheating in the form of weight cuts.

Upon a successful strike, momentum is mass multiplied by velocity. By getting your bodyweight behind it, by changing your point of balance, you have the extra mass to multiply your velocity, and momentum to overcome inertia, and can split a man in twain with simple maths.

My ideal fantasy barbarian build is how Arnold Schwarzenegger looked in Conan the Barbarian. Buff to the maximum of human potential, but still flexible and agile to dodge hits since heavy armor is not going to be worn. I don't think of the full Dave Bautista look as what a human would achieve. A race that tended to be stronger and larger on average than humans, like a giant blooded race or your classic fantasy Orc barbarian, yes, but I also envision them with equally strong legs and moving with full efficiency from hundreds of fights where they lived and the enemy died.

@Skallagrim, when you are cutting from right to left, your forward knee buckles in (to the left) too much, it affects the overall posture after finishing the cut and exposes the right hip. The knee should be pushed outward more, so that you don't present the right hip and shoulder as a target. Sorry to criticize, but it caught my eye on the illustration screenshot for the video, inside the video, it's actually much, much better. Also, I would emphasize that in right two-handed cut from left to right in a right guard, the feet should actually rotate 90 degrees to support the hip movement, with your back foot left standing only on tiptoe and the right foot rotated 90 degrees in the direction of the cut to allow maximum hip movement. It's very unnatural for beginners and I think a close study of the feet position could be helpful for many.
Otherwise good catch, two handed cuts have no power without proper hip movements, keep up the splendid work!

you seem to have gained back the weight you lost. any tips for how you lost it, and warnings for how you gained it back?

  •  4 года назад

Kinetic chaining. Arms alone are weak, arms with shoulders are stronger, arms-shoulders-pecs even more, and so forth.
It's why most people are not athletic - it takes a bit of experience to learn to support each movement with bigger, stonger muscle groups. You may be standing well on your feet, but is it your lower body supporting the weight as a unit, or did you just make two sticks out your leg bones to prop yourself up on?

You're pulling one hip back, whereas in Karate, which I practice, we pivot both hips about our centres - is there an advantage your method that mitigates the slight loss of distance, is it better with weapons for a reason I don't understand, or is it just another style of equal worth? Thanks :)
