My mom sweetie that used dryer sheets rubbed over the skin would repel them. Unfortunately I was always too tasty too mosquitos for that to work and found repellants, well, repellant 😕

I'd love to see a video talking about how a Two-Handed Battle Axe wielder would fight an opponent using a shield. I think it'd be interesting to see how it could actually be done.

A reenactment group once showed me how to push down a shield with a "Bartaxt" (like he mentioned in the video) I don't know the english term, but I think it's "bearded axe" ore something. Yea, you can grab the shield with youre axe and push it down to strike behind the shield.

skeggjaður öxi." A bearded axe is typically one-handed, while the type Skall demonstrates here is generally known as a "Dane axe."

In all honesty, in a fight, even a stick is useful. Not being armed at all is worse than having at least something, especially if it has a long reach and can chop.

Well that really isn't anything new though... Most dwarves in fantasy fiction are just that anyway. They are pretty much the fictional depictions of vikings except their height what with the horned helms and a tendency to swing axes and hammers and all. Aside from the Tolkien dwarves which are a bit more unique when it comes to their names the way they behave and their weapons and armor.

Vikings, or to go Viking was a raiding process. I think Roaming Dwarvish raiders is a pretty unused concept. Though Tolkien-inspired dwarves definitely are Norse-based, I wouldn’t say they were víkingrs.

Great to see the axe getting some love :D One thing I have wondered about is how axes were used in battles. I would imagine that while in formation they would be very impractical, as swinging it around would undoubtedly be in the way of those around you. Yet there are plenty of sources showing that they were at least present during battles. One solution I could think of is that they would be reserved for the later parts of a battle when formations and frontlines become a bit more chaotic. But even then we would rarely see the moshpit of Hollywood battles, so I'm unsure as to how effective they would be.
Valid tactic would be to send heavily armored troops wearing battleaxes as a sort of vanguards (just my opinion)
NeoNep With training, soldiers could swing in unison. A bit like a pike squad. Alternatively, the axe wielding special forces/officers can be spread along the line with other soldiers forming shield walls between them. Or the attack could use a more spread formation, covering any gaps with the awesome reach of the axes, similar to how modern soldiers with firearms patrol in open fields.

I guess one thing that would be interesting to see would be just how effective an axe is against shields compared to swords.
A few video games(Mount & Blade in particular) tend to showcase axes as being the perfect counter to shields. But just how well would the axe be able to render a shield useless?
Axes won’t really chop a shield apart like in games. It is, however, a very hard hitter. Deflecting an axe blow will take a lot more energy, and in particular, be quite painful. So someone won’t be able to withstand repeated axe blows for long even with a heavy shield.

Would there be any form of advantage in giving a curve to the handle? Forward, backward, maybe S shaped?
A handle that curves inward towards you would provide more leverage to your swing IF one hand is down near the butt of the handle, but less leverage if swinging from the middle. And regardless, you make it harder to adjust your hand positioning.

Good video. I have been fascinated by axe techniques since 'Vikings' first came on TV and brought the axe as a weapon to my attention in a slightly more realistic portrayal. All weapons of war are deadly, but I think the battle axe is particularly horrendous, psychologically; perhaps because it is often portrayed in the hands of a 'berserker,' a force of up-close-and-personal rage, combined with the weapon's perceived mass and physical power.
A devastating weapon indeed, never went quite out of fashion until the gunpowder era.

This is the Danish War Axe from Arms & Armor, which I can highly recommend. It is extremely well-crafted, light and agile, yet sturdy. I've owned mine for about a year now, and I've been training and demonstrating with it quite enjoyably in that time.

I don't know how expensive or how practical this would be, but if there were any way to make it possible, it would be really cool to see you demonstrate these various techniques (especially the less obvious ones, like "thrusting" or that downward reverse cut at the end) on like, a quartered pig from a butcher, so we could compare the actual impact on a person-like target of those less-powerful-but-still-effective strikes without you needing to actually chop up Bob with a big honkin' Viking axe xD
Everyone knows that the historically way to use a two handed battle axe is with one in each hand and wearing nothing.
King Stephen of England used a war axe at the Battle of Lincoln (1141) after his sword broke. He stood single-handedly after his men fled, killing many until he was swarmed and captured. Wiki has a good entry.
I've been thinking about this more, and I have another analogy. This axe obviously has more offensive potential than a sword and shield or spear and shield or many other weapons combinations. It's optimized for putting the hurt on folks, not defense of self etc. It's like a machine-gun, a better force multiplier. But it requires a squad of riflemen around it to work best, because it's heavy and cumbersome and not very pointable and so is vulnerable to being overwhelmed close up and in. The way riflemen maneuver and keep the enemy at bay, is what sheildmen do. While the guy with this clobbers people safely, the same way machine-gunners do far more than their fair share of DPS. The same way most units are all of shieldmen with swords or spears, and rarely are units all with greatswords or 2 handed axes, most military units are rifle ones, machine gun units are less common. Another way would be to think of Core and Heavy or elite choices in Warhammer, how the badasses don't work well without the regular guys setting everything up. Just a hypothesis, if even that.

Originally from northern Europe and previously found all over Canada, its numbers have been drastically declining due to urbanization, government regulation, and increasing housing prices. Now, a small population remains in the woods of eastern Canada, but their future remains uncertain.
This particular male, now that he has found a suitable location, displays his prowess with remarkable camerawork. Some believe that this is done to attract followers, who might also choose to become Axewielding Norsemen. Others think that this tactic might merely be to attract viewers, who occasionally leave behind some scraps for him to feed on. Whatever the purpose, it is truly a marvelous sight to behold, here in the dense forests of Nova Scotia.
Major problem with two handed battle axes is that there’s no pommel with which to end them rightly.

A very well dress axman. Very informative, I have always wondered about the battle of Hastings. I always thought Harold's men were in a shield wall on top of a rise but armed with axes. I'm wondering how that would work. Maybe I am just way off base in my notion.

The reason there aren't texts describing these techniques could just be that they didn't have specific styles. I mean, if you decided you wanted to use an axe, you used an axe and you could be really good at using it or you could be shit and... do something else, I guess. By watching others and fighting, you may have just been expected to pick things up.
Especially in that region, there would have been a big emphasis on natural talent versus training. If you didn't show prowess in a particular field, it would have been taken more as a sign that you weren't meant to take on that role rather than an issue that requires training. Essentially, doing so would be like turning someone who wasn't meant to kill into a killer. It's the idea of not interfering with a person's fate lest you incur the wrath of the gods or... whatever.
Superstitions aside, it's just good sense. If you just took everyone who wanted to be a warrior and made them a warrior, then there's no one to work the fields, make boats, or mind the children. You just have a bunch of people who are really good at fighting and nothing else.
Whenever I see a big battle axe, I remember: In WW2, there was a Russian solidier who ambushed and killed 20 nazi using nothing but a grenade launcher... without ammo.
That would be badass... except that dedicated grenade launchers were extremely rare in the war, and I have not heard of any Russian example. (Most everyone used rifle grenades)
Reminds me of WW1 where on the Western front a French soldier (IIRC) made a German fort surrender after holding them up, with no bullets remaining in his rifle
@@morgan3688 Germans used so many grenade launchers, that a captured German grenade launcher in Russian hands was not a rare case. Unfortunately, I can not google up the details of that story because it gets mixed up with a more popular story of one soldier Ovcharenko, who used an axe to steal 3 hand grenades, and used those to escape capture and kill 20 nazi.

@@BarafuAlbino No sir. They used a great many rifle grenades yes, however they only had a single stand alone grenade launcher system, the sturmpistole. They only made 200 during the entie war, thus it waa extremely rare. (Panzerfaust and and shrek are not grenade launchers)
In hærkamp we have the shaft of the battle axe, aka Dane Axe at 2m6cm long. The reason why, is cuz if u have the shaft at 180cm or less u have the reach disadvantige. I've tried a short Dane Axe. And its basicly unusable in lines and duels. And all that is cuz the weapon reach. When u use a battle axe or a poleaxe in general which a Dane Axe IS, reach is everything. We dont have evidences of a Dane Axe with a pike in the butt end, but the Vikings May have used it. The reason why i think that they have. Is that u have more options. U can thrust with the butt end for instance which r far more effektive than just a plain shaft.

Thanks for the presentation. There hare some findings I want to share based on my practice with such an axe several years ago. 1.) the base (lower hand) should 'cup' the bottom of the shaft for greater subtle means of dexterous maneuverability 2.) the upper hand should slide down the shaft as you swing the axe which adds to the force and fluidity of the motion. the top hand logically comes to firm grip/rest at the pt of the strike into the Ås rune form 3.) the 'thor rune form (back hand) which you suggested is awkward is very effective although you should never cross the top arm over the base. Think of this regards to unarmed kung fu styles like Wing Chun where you never cross the arms or get locked/pinned in Chi Sao. Hence, once you raise that axe up and over the back of the head and then lower it, you should turn the hips and slide the back foot around with the weight shift so the added waist power sees you take the line of the opponent via the Hagl rune cross cut and your hands are not crossed rather one is above the other.
Other fun techniques to try are based on their renown at pulling foes off horse back and pulling down shield walls i.e. swing the axe forth, over extending over the top of the shield pulling the axe down to expose the opponents face and then thrusting forth.
