I started into ham radio in 1987 with Icom, Yaesu and Kenwood equipment. 37 years later when purchasing “toys” the budget dictates way more than it used to exactly what I can get. I rely on Josh and a few others to let me know A: what actually is clean enough to not be a problem, and 2: what actually fits in my meager radio budget. Thank you Josh!

Thank you for responsibly BUYING this radio and reporting some nice features but also demonstrating its unethical for us with licenses but also illegal and unethical transmission for all consumers.
It goes to the core of too many of these producers of cheap gear giving all consumers and regulatory bodies who keep the airwaves usable a huge amount of outright CONTEMPT and DISRESPECT.
Words aka "marketing and reviews" from them and many of the YT channels are not only being a disservice but morally being thieves and liars on top of bootleggers putting this on the market in any place that has regulations designed to keep our bandwidth usable.
Spurious Emmisions and lack of recieving protection and detection makes a radio a box of junk parts not an HT Transceiver.
I appreciate, like so many others your honest and instructive videos without gaslighting and misplaced loyalty to vendors. Your an asset to us all especially those of just getting into the latest tech in ham radio. Thank you for your service Josh. Max respect to you!

Great video. After watching this, I fired up my spectrum analyzer and confirmed the harmonics - dang! This thing obviously has no filters, but what can one expect from a cheap Chinese radio. That being said, it is a cool radio, just gotta love the MDC sound it can generate for a roger "beep", although MDC systems can't seem to be able to decode whatever it is saying - it must be sending some kind of Chinese code. For all I know, this thing is probably trying to hack into my wireless network...

My favorite radios that I drag around right now are the TYT UV390, TYT UV88, and Yaesu FT-65R. All of them would benefit from high capacity batteries with USB-C charging.
I really want to like the Talkpod, but don’t really care for the harmonic problem. If they fix it, I’ll buy one.
I’ve also noticed that this same menu, probably the same core radio, is in a few different new models.
Hoping for TYT to refresh their line up soon to include USB-C batteries and better water proofing - an FCC compliant UV98 with USBc would be cool. UV390 is due for an update too I think.

It makes the radio feel better in the hand, and stand up better on a table. So what happens is those USBC batteries become the spare for emergency use if I somehow burn through the 3200 batteries and don’t have a cradle to charge off of. Cheers.

My first HT was a UV5R, it served its purpose, and it is still the radio I tell our new hams to get, well proven over time, can be had for about $55CAD. After that I tell them if they want to upgrade something like a FT60 or FT70 are great options unless they are looking at massive digital/DMR use, can't help them there! I think my buddies dad has rave reviews of the Alinco MD5. I know Lewis, M3HHY from across the pond has played with a Jianpai 8800 that piqued my interest, almost like a knock off of a FT5DR minus a bunch of the sexy Japanese features, but I believe it was tri-band TX and something like quadband receive, but so dang hard to get outside of China.

Josh, a receiver sensitivity and selectivity test would have been an interesting addition to your "lab test". The cheap junk coming out of china (primarily the many Baofengs under various names) are notorious for having lousy front ends. Stacked up against a Kenwood, Yaesu, Icom, et al, the front ends of these cheapies are easily overloaded.
Wasn't quite clear from your comments re lack of transmit spectral purity but the loss of power to the fundamental is another problem associated with the power going to the harmonics.
    But, then it's a cheap radio ...

The reason supposedly is with usb-C to usb-C is that the charge block and the device will decide what power to push but with usb-A to usb-C it doesn't do this is will blindly push power. so these cheap usb-c chargeable battery don't likely have a computer in them to tell the block to charge them. Im not entirely sure, that's just what I heard floating around as the reason for not charging usb-c to usb-c.

Your UVK5 doesn't USB charge? Make sure you aren't plugging into a PD charger. It works fine with a standard charger.

You can use any SDR dongle or radio that displays a full band waterfall on itself or computer with just a wire antenna and a few carbon non inductive(wire wound) resistors connected to your SDR Radio. Its been a long and old tradition to use just sucha a setup to monitor your station broadcasting quality and sound processing.
The SDRPlay RSP1 and others in that same quality and computer screen can literally show the entire band or even several 100 Mhz if your computer is that powerful.
Keep that antenna far away from your transmitting rig or antenna while using some protection like an attenuator or carbon resistor and also have the outer shield running to ground or using protection Such as W2AEW and others teach about to protect recievers or test equipment monitoring and testing the output.

Chirp supports the UV-K5 now. Add about harmonics, who cares. These radios are used on the go in the mountains or camping in the woods. The chance this radio will intefere with anything is really close to zero. Maybe if you use it only at home with an external antenna it would be a problem. I installed the UV-k5 hack witch make it recieve from 18 to 1300Mhz, and for some reason this radio now transmits on the airband, and that's really bad.
