Pure magic.
Just saw him and a couple friends at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor for a Hawaiian holiday concert and heard the best rendition of Little Drummer Boy ever! He is truly a virtuoso and a Hawaiian treasure! Mahalo for your humble, grateful and loving heart, Jake!!!
Brilliant.
When I saw this, I really knocked myself over the head. After seeing this, I swore that I would never make fun of a ukulele-player ever again. *headdesk*
This guy touched my heart so bad. He's a Jimi hendrix on the ukulele.
What a piece of art. ♥
i dont expect anything less from the best ukulele player in the world, dang man im a huge fan of Jake SHimabukuro and i think he rocks! 10 Stars man!
truly beautiful never realized the full potential of the ukele until listening to Jake, great talent!
danm i can listen to this song al day long i love is i wish i could play like that :'(
Jake YOU ARE THE MAN !!!!!!!!
I saw him in my home town and he signed my uke, it was the best concert i have ever seen.
every once in a great while you see someone who was born to do what they do.
Love this !
If the world were full of Jake Shimakuro's, it would be a good place
he really should get a grammy, this guy blows me away every time!
Beautiful :-)
this guy is so amazing!!!! cant stop listening to his stuff
POW !!!
that just blew my mind!
its all over the place!!
this is one of my favorites. jake is just fucking amazing
It's really to bad that he doesn't get a lot of publicity. His talent is just, do damn rare to be passed up by anyone. 40-50 years from now people will discover his music and he will be a classical legend no DOUBT. He's already a legend to anyone who gets even the slightest taste of his talent.
Nobody can do it like Jake.
Simply amazing.
The thing that makes Jake so good is that his passion shines through those notes.
he plays with so much passion, adorable
This sounds sooo beautiful ! Amazing !
omg i live next to him and he's my best friend's brother so i getting lessons from him ^^ im not lying haha and he played this song with my school orchestra ^^ XD i cant believe he pointed me out in the middle cause i had solo... omg i was so embarressed lolz
This song is beautiful. Truly.
Michelle, excellent footage and closeups of Jakes playing, well done on including the fan and the intro and fad outs w/ very simple credits is understated and top notch. You're wonderful and I appreciate all you've done here and most of all sharing this wonderful footage w/ us. Respect, Epiha
Alohaaaaa from Johnny Pal. I have humbly attached my version of Jake's breathtaking song "Dragon." I did the best I could as it is a very difficult song with many levels of playing skills required. No song by Jake is easy but what a learning curve! Please try to enjoy. Mahalo Michelle! Johnny "Kiki" Pal of MangoDaville
It is true what you say about your friends beings jerks because they criticize this kind of music, but I would have to disagree with you when you say that rock is for people that think that they can make music. Obviously you've been listening to the wrong kind of rock (or your friends have), like 0rockout0 says,Joe Satriani is one great guitarist, and he's a rocker. So I just think that you're generalization just made you into one of your friends (no offense).
i agree with trioofsixes. this guy is genius and deserves so much more..
i hate rap. really what it is is retards at poetry. its horrible ranting on about the same three or four thing to a rhythmic beat thats not even all that great.
music like this not only has a great rhythmic quality it also has a great tonal and altogether musical quality, the dynamics change, the tempo changes, the key changes, all of them keeping to a very good melody with a large ammount of variety.
i'm on the verge of tears every time i hear this song. it's purely amazing. i'm almost at a loss for words, and i can't really explain how it makes me feel.
i found out about him at a border's. i saw his CD's on a shelf, and me being a japan fan, i knew i had to listen to them and i had to decide between the CD with this song on it and walking down rainhill, kinda regret not getting this song now. this dude blows me away everytime i listen to him
Its actually considered a distraction in classical music for a musician to move whilest playing (more than necessary of course).
It doesn't have too much to do with feeling the music, its the same chemical process that makes you want to dance anyways.
But Shinigami is still a bit of a toss...
So sweet. Thanks Jake.
personally i say ukulele, but i'm biased. but i think it mostly depends on who's playing the instrument, because both are great. and jake can really hand out cans of whoop-ass when it comes to the ukulele.
When I hear "ukulele," I picture a man a man in a grass skirt strumming away a island tune. The kind of melodies this guy pumps out tiny thing is far from what I expected to hear. At times it sounds like a e-guitar~
love the asian accents in the beginning =)
depends on how you look at things crazy650c. i think his point as an artist is to get the most out of the simple instrument. do you doubt he could tear up a guitar if he wanted to? i think he enjoys the challenge of these four strings.
man his show in san antonio was amazing lol he said he would do an encore and i yelled crazy g and he laughed and smiled at me but then an old couple said it was there anniversary so he played ave maria still a great song
Just saw that he was tapping. that stuff is crazy weird. If you want to see more tapping also check out Zack Kim. He's not like Jake but he's pretty awesome for his age. Guitars, yes plural, all done by tapping.
Many things come to mind...its hard to express what they are, so i'll go with simply saying that this is an awesome song played by an excellent artist, and rating it 5 stars. Go for the grammy jake! :D
i defo know who the greatest ukulele player is in the world!!! JAKE!!!! man this guy is like amazing in like all aspects of ukulele playing...! he has a huge range of dynamics and notes....genius
i saw him live :D
I went to to Tommy Emmanue 2 days agol and he was there to :P
He played before tommy played and then later on they played together
It was Realy Amazing ! :D
rohbit: YES! You're right! That was definitely the one I was thinking of. The Crazy Train solo was similar, but that part from Sultans of Swing was almost right on. Thanks a ton!
It's like if Trace Bundy played the uke.
Ha ha, I made myself want to go to the Dueling Ninjas vido and call Trace "Jake Shimabukuro with a guitar." K, now I'm doing it.
I wanna know what he is thinking about when he plays! You can just tell he is completely in tune with the uke! It's like the ukulele is an extension of him. I love you Jake!
I'm pretty sure it's original....but the rapid trills (3:23-3:36) sound really familiar for the first five seconds. Anyone have any idea what song that's similar to?
man.. my spine just tingled..and no im not even joking
Arrgh your gonna make me lock myself up in my room with my guitar to get as good as you for the next 5 years or so lol
LOVE IT!!!! ~always~ my Son and Daughter listen to jake since in the womb :o) One of my favs is Blue Roses Falling. INCREDIBLE
zack kim is amazing in his own style. I think it's very much like piano. what he does is really hard to mimic even if you try.
if anything its similar sultans of swing, not crazy train. except he taps here and in sultans of swing that part of the song is picked.
thebassmanesa: THANK YOU! That was driving me nuts! It's not exactly the same, but it's close enough that it was really bugging me....
yah i want to know too, waht Sarah McLachlan song is that at the end of His song dragon, and you fade it out with that background music
Saw Jake in Eugene Oregon last year. All i can say, i wasn't in eugene for that 30 minutes. Jake took me somewhere else.
Not without rearranging the strings, but even then you wont be able to play most ukulele music, the frets are too far away.
he has played some guitar tracks. On the album 'walking down rainhill', I think the last track is him playing guitar.
hey jake s. as my insiperation i promise to the most pro. uke eva if i dont then ill just on playing . IM THE NEXT UKE GIRL !
theres a possibility of anything. maybe try a different tuning and using a capo. just mess around. i'm sure it's possible.
to deny that he is a true musician is an abomination....despite the head movement....keep hating haters its what you do best....
I can see only one thing. That ukulele is YOUR instrument. I like your gentle and (whats more) very technical way of playing.
3:49 When he uncrosses his legs, you know you'd better have some duct tape on your socks so they don't blow off.
of course you can your just copying
try to right something original that this many people like
thats the tricky stuff
It's also very similar to the solo of the Dire Straits song Sultans of Swing. Anyone know the part I'm talking about?
i saw a yo yo ma concert on pbs last night and i this this fellow is better on his instrument than ma is on his
wow!
yeah try playing a ukelele, you'll sound worse than a choked up harp, LOL! just give it to the guy, show some love.
The tapping part he does is technically brilliant, but seems superficial and just for show. Otherwise, lubbely.
from 1:06:

the real musicians like him don't mind the grammies, its funny he passes it off as a laughing matter.
no no you dont want a grammy. they only give those to crap bags anymore. you deserve much better rewards
His taps are so soft even when he goes cresendo.
He is one with his working tool,, thumbs up totally :)
im only 12 years old, and i can play most of this somg, and all of while my guitar weeps by jake .
some people are naturally born to do thing and im guessing his talent isnt telesales lol.
(=)=(
Great to see this live, though you do miss the amazing violin backing that's on the album.
yea ive got a 17 fret and i play past it. jake uses up to the 15th fret in Guitar Gently Weeps
do a little more then you'll have the "tapping technique" which is used widely in music.
Theres enough truth in what you just said to fill all the empty brains throughout the world.
He looks so serious compared to the other songs lol
Too good, I gotta get that solo down
that song is ice cream by um i forgot who its by some lady but ya its called ice cream
He has lots of CD's just Goggle his name.. I have most of his CD's... Jake you Da Man!
hes actually amazing and such a cool guy aswell, i also really like his tshirt lol
That tapping solo was over-rated, every child with an electric guitar can do that.
can anyone tell me the name of the song that is played at the end of this video?
uggghh... this is just so amazing... ear candy in on of its truest form..
Anyone know what the name of the song that plays at the end of the video is??
no way did he tap on a freeking ukulele D':
mind you, he does play ukulele :/
my favorite song by him(:
i always feel sad after listening to it, though :P
is he hittin a note w/ the undex finger on his strummin hand? i want that uke
Thanks for sharing!
@nerdalert12345 but i cant do the like the part where hes super fast picking
A guy at my school played this song on stage at an after-school assembly :3
Is anyone else reminded of Chico's piano playing in the Marx Bros. movies?
i would like the chord progression. i'd like to do a cover on my mandolin
w.o.w hes awsome i bet he could make begginer songs sound amazing.
James Hill and Ukulele Bartt are great too, but I'm easily the best ;-).
the tapping solo is awesome id like to see wat he can do on a guitar
he's tapping on a ukelele! he's the Michael Angelo Batio of ukelele!
That comment might well get more respect if you typed in English...
On the album he plays a guitar version of the song heartbeat.
every once in a while
you'll see an asian do it better then you
Does anybody know the song played in the credits Stating at 5:00?
is it possible to tune a standard acoustic guitar to gcea? lol
@pri32us no no... its just that they missed the 'like' button
his music is amazingg, lmao at sejb12992's comment :D
:( when i tap on my uke all it does is an ugly sound :( ugh
