      That was the case of all slaves. Besides his "freedom" wouldn't be much; he'd just get a job in the North that paid a little more, and living-expenses might be higher. He might not be able to afford a wife.

    As a he said he was from the Akan tribe, I had to skip backwards and hear it again. It was really emotional as I come from the Ashanti tribe. 🥺
    Edit: for more accuracy the Akan are an ethnolinguistic group comprised of tribes, in Ghana, one is the Ashanti tribe.

      And both were slave traders. The Malinke moved from Mali to Senegal in order to trade in slaves for the Kings of Mali. The Kinte clan were rich slave traders. The Akan also traded with the Arabs before trading with the Portuguese, Dutch, French, Spanish, English and Americans.

      @@samsparacino2250 it was more of John didn’t agree with how they were representing a black family on tv. They focused more on JJ being silly than the other 2 kids who actually wanted to be successful. They couldn’t agree and they fired him.

      360whiplash: this version of the story is pretty sketchy on the facts.
      Later the TBS version revealed the fact that he was sold into slavery by a rival tribe, and then brought to America, where he escaped to join the British army, but deserted because they used him for a human shield, and was returned to the farm.
