I'm from Brazil and I finally bought some Rosemary brushes. They are fantastic! I love these brushes so much that I put them to sleep on my bed while I sleep on the floor after a whole day working and painting.
Lol 🤣 lucky brushes!
@@MrAddison79 Lol :)
I was pleasantly surprised that Quang uses the same soap (Ivory), that I've been using for 40 years. This is old school and shows you don't need to purchase expensive brush cleaners. I discovered the vegetable oil thing a few years back and often use that instead of a terp indoors-especially if I don't have good ventilation. I usually use the palm of my hand to gently clean my brushes with the Ivory and then rinse. I've kept brushes going for years using these methods-even cheaper brushes. I've never owned a Rosemary brush, but have about $200 dollars worth on their way, having ordered them the other day. I especially looked for the longer flats, since my favorite brush in the past has been a cheaper Creative Mark Pro Stroke ChungKing long filbert. That brush is amazing and is longer than any brush on the market that I know of. I wish Rosemary could make one of those. The Creative Mark bristles in a number 4 filbert long measure in at around a whopping 1 and 5/8 of an inch. In other words the bristles are nearly as long as the metal ferrule. Their egbert might be this long. Once loaded, they can lay on a long stroke, for sure. I wish they had a flat this long, but it may not be practical to make a flat this long.
I’ve found that leaving brushes in Turpinoid Natural for a few days (or even a week or more) will not only dissolve any old hardened paint in your bristles, but it will also condition the brush. After that you can wash with warm soap and water. You will be amazed how it extends the life of an old brush.
It even works on a pallet. Just don’t try to remove dried paint from the canvas this way because it ruins the gesso. It softens it and it wouldn’t reharden. The company claimed mineral spirits would do the same but it won’t.
Keeping brushes in oil overnight is good idea. Will do likewise now onwards. Thanks. 🙏
This is great!! Thank you so much for sharing!
You're welcome! I'm thrilled it was useful for you!
I presently use a paint tray but I like the size you use
Excellent! Thank you so much! Needed a good method and thanks to you Quang, I've found it.
Happy to hear it! :)
Thank you! Excellent tips
Great video
amazing, thanks
I see the Goop jar under the table! I love that stuff for deep cleaning brushes. Normally, I just use Fels-Naptha after rinsing in mineral spirits
Now I have window envy.
Hope you enjoyed the video and found it useful, Casey! :)
@@RosemaryCoArtistBrushes absolutely! I have already shared to one of my pages. It's exactly my process, except (based on recommendations from the Painting Best Practices page) I use linseed, or walnut, or a combo of those, only artist-grade oils instead of cooking oil. My brushes are *precious* to me (you know how I feel about my brushes!) They're worth it! This will be great to share with students also. Thank you both!
@@caseycheuvront Glad to hear you'll be able to share this with your students too. This is part of a big old series I'm putting out there. Plenty of useful information to get out to folks! We are on it! :) S
Oh, I have been much too harsh on my brushes, I see. Thank you for your excellent demo.
You are welcome! I am so happy to hear that you have enjoyed this. Our aim is to teach and show lots of different ways to clean your brushes. If one person finds it useful, it was worth doing! Thanks for your comment!
wow, look at that pretty much the same way I do it. Least I know now Ive gotten something right lol
I would say the only thing i do is wrap my rounds with string at the end.
This is just one example! We have an entire series of these brush cleaning videos coming out! I'm glad you found it useful! :)
Do you just dump the oil after there’s so much pigment in it? I’ve started doing this and it saves so much time cleaning brushes. Thank you!
If I may ask...What kind of oil do you soak your brushes in? ..would mineral oil work?...Thank you
Vegetable or canola
@@Captain_MonsterFart Thank you 🙂
You can use acetone to clean those ones that have hardened up! Then recondition it. I use the Mona Lisa pink soap for conditioning usually.
What kind of oil?
What type of oil is used in the tray?
Vegetable or canola oil
I have an issue... all my brush are frayed. I have purchased Rosemary brushes Ivory and eclipse. Contacted Rosemary and they replaced, as thought could be a manufacture issue. Well it happened again. All my brushes are frayed not just my Rosemary. They told me not to use mineral sprits. Did clean per your advice. What could I be doing wrong as so frustrated to not have brushes that work. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you
How many days can I leave my brushes in the oil Pan?
May I ask what Quang Ho means with vegetable oil? Can I use Walnut oil? Sesame Oil or Olive oil?
I've spoken with Quang to find out. Canola oil, and veg oil without Vitamin E added are all fine to use.
@@RosemaryCoArtistBrushes I'm curious, why not with vitamin E?
Vitamin E goops and gums up
where can I find that rectangular basin that has the oil in it?
That's a good question. I would recommend googling it to see if you can find it there. :)
That appears to be a paint tray, the kind one would use when using a paint roller to paint a wall. The angled ramp with the bumps is where you roll off excess paint after dipping the roller in the trough. Just as there are different size paint rollers, there are different size paint trays. Your local hardware or paint supply store will stock them.
Will it not gonna have molds or algae in the long run of i use vegetable oil?
No, your oil is not going to mold, and you can also change it often-it's very inexpensive. I never use it to cook with, but purchase a large container from Costco. If I'm painting in an area that I can't use terps, I just have a jar of oil, since oil dissolves oil paints and as Quang says, it conditions brushes (especially natural hair).
I also asked Quang for you on this: He said if you don't paint for a long period of time it could be a problem - but you will find that the oil does need changing out occasionally because the pain will build up at the bottom of the tray. Hope this helps!
@@RosemaryCoArtistBrushes what do you do with the used vegetable oil?? Does it go to toxic waste recycling?
does type of oil matter? i use geneva brush dip. but other oil would be nice.
I've spoken with Quang to find out. Canola oil, and veg oil without Vitamin E added are all fine to use.
Thank u!! Love your brushes !! Just ordered the long and extra long! Can’t wait to play with them !!
@@redbrookefarm7848 thank you so much - hope you will like the extra longs! :)
where do i dispose of the canola vegetable oil after?
It will eventually all be used up. Some of it gets removed every time you remove the brushes. Then just fill up the pan with more oil.
He doesn't say what they're soaking in, or what he's rinsing with!!!
Let Quang Ho know that those old hardened paint encrusted brushes are not a lost cause. Chroma make a product called Chroma Incredible Brush Cleaner, which will release dried hardened paint - oil or acrylic, it doesn't matter - and give you back a completely usable brush again. I've used it on brushes that sat in the discard pile for a couple of years. It's not a solvent, not flammable, just a super-suffectant. (It will also strip off the Nickel plating from cheaper brush ferules.)
Great video full of useful tips.
Try Murphy’s Oil Soap
@@katherandefy Product not available in the Australian marketplace.
I use Suave Argon hair oil to clean & condition the brushes. It pulls excess paint out of the brush that you might have missed with just soap & water. You can leave it on the brushes too to condition. .
