Another one lost to us. The trouble is us oldies (I'm nearly 80) are having to get used to seeing the greats disappear from earth, but not our memories. Keep on rocking up there, Steve!
Keep on rocking up there Steve….grow up….pay the man his respect…he is not rocking anywhere…he is getting the very good long sleep he deserved for such a beautiful life he led.
I had no idea Steve had passed away until I read this. Gutted, I’m 23 and loved cockney rebels and also Steve’s solo career. Come up and see me make me smile, my all time favourite. Rip Steve
Never got kicked out, but I to would play it over an over an over, never new in till recently this song had a robust after life many movies and commercials an anthem to be shure!!!!
@@westboundbadger When this was released in 1975 . The older people from the 1960's era said that modern music (eg this) was vastly inferior to the music they had been brought up in the 60's ps plenty of great modern music eg LP "lost on you" , The Kills "Black tar"
I learned this song word for word while I was locked down in St. Albert Alberta Canada. The first 3 month lockdown in bar 2020. I play it all the time. It got me thru all that madness.
Timeless master piece classic music My time 1950/70/80 My first date ❤ My first love ❤ She had a beautiful smile ❤ Unfortunately didn't last. Only for 2 years Thanks for this song Never will for get her beautiful smile Thanks Steve ❤ We had the best back then Proper England Great artist Great songs Great actor's Great flims Great people Great childhood happiness Great England ❤❤ Thanks Steve for my first date............❤
still one of the most stellar guitar runs in brit pop of any era. short but sweet. To SH, respect, even from an ancient cursed to immortality, your heart is in the right place and you helped us all out.
Timeless, perfect song in every aspect , good musicians and Steve doing a great job as centre man and vocalist. Will be listening to this in another 50 years
Great song, I have never grown tired of listening to it since its original release in 1975. I was impressed that he can work a crowd - not any easy thing to do.
Saw him in '02 at a free festival as an angsty 16 year old, dressed in baggy jeans with a big chain and spikey nu-metal hair. I was just passing through, but he was playing Make Me Smile (a favourite in Dad's car when I was a little 'un) and did the same sort of crowd work. I wasn't angsty at that moment, it was fucking wonderful. I can't possibly ever feel bored of this song.
The magic , the personality , the PURE love of music and performing for the fans . You will be so sadly missed but your enthusiasm lives on in my vinyl collection at full volume.......
I don’t believe you. You say that you found this song “recently,” 3 yrs ago when you were 66. Let say you were born around 1955. You would have been about 20 when this song was first released - when Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel went to the top of the charts. So don’t give us any rubbish that you don’t remember the song when it was first released. You were 20 yrs old then, not 20 months.
This guy is a perfect example of 70,s show you how to play the crowd .. I've loved this song since the seventies. . Steve long may you reign . Ronan ..
Don't think he changes key. Doesn't follow the record note for note, true. Sings the refrain an octave up too. I've found it works better that way live meself - doesn't cut through otherwise, without female backing singers! I think this is a great version.
What a legend. One of the best ever written songs & the most underrated singer of all time. He has so much respect for people & acknowledges his band members in the song when they impressed him.
Seen him live in porthcawl a few years back.i waited 27 yrs 2 c him.and WOW.wot a performance.!! He gave it his all.and had time 2 autograph my albums.everybody else had CDs .he said not seen lps 4 a long time.lol.loves a prima dona.now framed an hanging on my wall.
What a great musician Steve is. Always thought he had a great voice as well. One of my all time favourites- Cockney Rebel were superb as a band and the albums were terrific. He sounds a really nice bloke
its so good to witness a once pasty, skinny, spaced out looking and sounding 70's stooge become a thoroughly wholesome and respectable and distinguishably handsome rounded, full of life, mature male of the 21st century! lol. it proves that all things are indeed possible! lol :-). classic tune. always makes ME smile :-)
RIP Steve Harley. What a great song this was in the early 1970s. Truly wonderful. But what I didn’t know then, although have since learned, was that Steve Harley didn’t exactly have the best of relationships with the other members of Cockney Rebel. Oh well, Steve has now gone and one must not speak ill of the dead.
When you spend so much time with others, and the creative differences start, money is involved, other people are involved, gruelling schedules, illness, spotlight on everything publicly said... it is a melting pot for issues. many bands have had this problem. Some of my best friends were also assholes at times. some good still comes though, like this song. I read this song was kind of about Steve saying "well if it is so good out there, then go out there and prove it" anyway the song Rocks, and has an awesome solo.
I discovered CRebel on youtube. Loved EVERY song. Years later, I discover Steves live performances. I regret I don' t have a time machine to see him on stage. Come up and see me Steve! Signed: A fan.
On the original he sang in a more contrived, self consciously "pop" way, but this is sensational and better; his voice is much better now than it ever was. Brilliant!
A time less classic, a great band then and a great band now, there is so much shit music now, but this band gives me a very big lift when I listen to it and it reminds me of when music was music. it makes my day, Steve & cockney rebel are magic .... keep on with the best music ever ... best regards guys xx
You think this is flawless? Find the version he did on an Aussie show Rockwiz. It is fantastic. Imho: amazing backing singers and a fantastic guitar solo.
@@DougieL I agree that version is truer to the recording (and probably better on technical aspects including his singing, his voice is much smoother there), and those backing singers are lovely. That guitar solo is great as well. But this has touches of magic I can't explain, the pacing, that organ in the climax, this guitar solo is flawed, but man does it climax beautifully.
RIP Steve, thanks for the music 😥
Indeed, R.I.P. Steve.
Another one lost to us. The trouble is us oldies (I'm nearly 80) are having to get used to seeing the greats disappear from earth, but not our memories. Keep on rocking up there, Steve!
💯
Mate, Im a bit younger but I broke down when I heard he passed. Another part of my youth gone.
Trouble is there’s nothing to replace them .
Keep on rocking up there Steve….grow up….pay the man his respect…he is not rocking anywhere…he is getting the very good long sleep he deserved for such a beautiful life he led.

This was the song playing in the delivery suite when my son was born in 2003. It means so much much to myself and my wife.
That acoustic solo gets me every time.
How has this song got better and better over the years?!
I learned this song word for word while I was locked down in St. Albert Alberta Canada. The first 3 month lockdown in bar 2020. I play it all the time. It got me thru all that madness.

Steve is still bringing the magic!
+FestivoTV Not really
+FestivoTV Other than he can't remember the words and keeps changing key continually.

Yes, still a great invocation to the Green Man!
He can't sing, never could. But he's still funking awesome.
was a hit in 1975, here he is now in 2013 nearly 40 years later still banging it out...💖

Steve Harley wearing a Bob Dylan T-shirt, awesome
Great song one of my dad’s favourites. Famous for the use in The Full Monty.

Yeah,I thought along similar lines but NO WAY I would recognise him as his younger self .Just sad to see people grow old actually .
