    Quite often the HG will breach before it fully blows. This typically occurs between the cylinder and the coolant channels and doesn't result in a fluid exchange. What happens is the breach is too small to let coolant into the cylinder but upon acceleration, combustion gases get forced through the breach into the coolant channel. As the gas passes the temperature sensor, the temperature gauge on your dash goes up. Letting off the gas completely will stop forcing gas into the coolant channel and the gauge will slowly drop. The engine isn't actually overheating, but the HG is doomed. I learned this the hard way when I was younger and didn't know much about engines. Had a 99 Civic, It drove me crazy, I ended up changing all the primary cooling parts- fan relay, temp sensor, thermostat, radiator - which didn't fix the problem, and then someone recommended I get the radiator sniffed at a smog shop. Sure enough, hydrocarbons were present.

      Think my bikes doing this. Cause it's not burning coolant still full. I mean the exhaust is white an when I turn the bike of it smokes white out the side i thinks bad. Oil looks fine but some going somewhere. It's coming out the top the head or something down the cylinder not alot. It's also watery oil. Fan rad sensor gone or fans gone idk guess ima figure it out one these days. Ima dump the oil first clearly an then from there I'll figure the rest out just hope I ain't gotta surface the block if I do have a gasket leak I know I do. It lost some power from start to end of summer about 5 miles an hour. So somethings going somewhere an it started over heating in the end if summer. I do think its blowing air in my antifreeze I got lucky it didnt blow blow or really mixed fluids thank god but I'll figure it out soon enough

    Actually it's more often cracked head than blown head gasket. Initial sign, in my experience is when you see vapor-like smoke coming from the coolant exp.tank, when you start the engine. Everything is fine, temperature is ok, hoses are ok, pressure inside the cooling system is ok, just there is some smoke there and you can see very thin skim, barely visible, floating on the coolant surface in the exp.tank. Be 99% sure that there is a problem with the engine's head or even a block. It is easy test to perform when you wanna buy a used car. Start the engine with the cap off the exp.tank and watch with the flashlight pointed into coolant. If you see a smoke after 3-4 minutes coming from there and more, if you see that tiny skim there, be almost sure that you are buying a huge problem. Just get away from that car.

    • @Superstuffed
      @Superstuffed 4 года назад +3

      04 GTO. I have a question. So I took it to a friend mechanic and he did the test where he took off the cap and started the car and all the coolant came out. Would this be a head gasket or something of that sort?
      I don't see white gunk, or milky oil, no overheating on the gauge (but I do FEEL it getting hot when I drive it for a while) and no white smoke. But it does struggle to start (sometimes it takes a couple tries sometime starts right away) and it's no the battery and I just put a new starter in, and some sensor on the throttle intake.

    • @alespretor27
      @alespretor27 4 года назад

      @@Superstuffed if it did that once or couple of times it may be just an air trapped in the system. It is different than that when you have pressure in the cooling system that comes from cylinders, which is constant. The warmer the engine the more bubbles you got there in the exp.tank. Most of cases it's cyl.head.

      What if bubbles comes out and no smoke? I have I feeling when they changed radiator that they did not done it properly. If there is some air pockets it could produce same in coolant tank.I hear also water in cabine like there is some water flushing cause those pockets can be made everywhere especially when engine is big like 4.0 V6 from Toyota. The engine is running great, no missfire starts at minus like temps like hero and works like charm.

      Recently I could smell coolant inside the car while driving, then later on I noticed that the coolant tank was empty. Then, when at a stop while car is in drive the car engine would shiver and hesitate. Last thing I did I checked oil and it looked drippy like part oil and part water. The car is an 03’ Mercedes’ sedan. I think it could be cracked block too or faulty expansion cap at least but, what do you think?

    Got new heads because it was blowing up my radiator. After the new heads I took a 3000 mile trip..it overheated. I immediately pulled over and let it cool. Kept coolant in it filling about 1/2 gallon a day. Never overheated again, but after sitting for 8 hours in 30 degree weather the radiator still had pressure built up in it. My mechanic is certain the heads are just fine and is replacing the bad radiator again. Thinking I want a second opinion on the heads. Ran fine, made it the 2500 miles after the overheating, but the pressure in the radiator has me worried.

    • @christianhudspeth3338
      @christianhudspeth3338 2 года назад +3

      Sounds normal to me though I'm not a mechanic but it makes sense that in such a complex system with air trapped everywhere that there would be a pocket somewhere. People advise you actually go back and fill the reservoir after it's been filled from empty after driving for 5 min.

    Getting my headgasket replaced and head skimmed. My symptoms was light white smoke out the exhaust when at a traffic light. No over heating. However, my car would sometimes start limping and misfiring (it's not sparks or anything trust me). The other thing is it was running pretty rich and guzzling fuel. Mechanic said I caught the failure really early causing a slight compression issue in cylinder 2. Coolant wasnt running out quickly but he noticed when doing the bubble test a bit of bubbling was happening. It is an MGZR which even though it had a headgasket replaced 40k ago, it wasn't a good one. They are skimming, cleaning and putting an updated, modern and better gasket in. I'm hoping this fixes my issues I should be getting it back tomorrow.. after spending nearly £1k on all these upgrades and repairs.

    thank you so much

    • @mykejohnson582
      @mykejohnson582 5 лет назад

      Yeah exactly mine too it cranks fine, it's not overheating but there's definitely a loss of power and the mayonaise mixture is there, also water is coming out the tail pipe along with the whitish blue smoke, allot of these videos didn't even touch on the stuff he said here they was using the testers in the radiator it's more to it than using testers.

    • @mfgreviews5028
      @mfgreviews5028 3 года назад

      Loss of power could also be a vacuum leak which is very common, or a bad injector or a bad intake manifold. The only sure way to know if it's a head gasket is the combustion test. The second best way is blue or gray smoke from the tailgate after it's running for a few minutes. The third best way is losing coolant but not seeing any leaks.

    my WJ 4.0 3 years no problem. Yesterday, pegged at 260. Therm good, sensor good, low coolant. Not going thru heater core do bypassed. Upper hose hard hot boiling water, bottom hose cool. So possibly radiator clogged, water pump shot or head gasket. Now like to mention I thought the radiator was leaking for a while . When the therm pops I can see a wisp of steam from the front but could never catch it to see where it comes from but even hot TX the engine stayed at 208. Will double check oil tonight to see if milky, maybe try to flush radiator. No smoke at all. Thought air bubbles but trying to burp it just comes boiling out. Seems as if water is trying to be pumped thru the motor bit once his radiator it has no place to go. But this from 1 day ok next minute 260. 1 weird thing I saw was once bypassed core and started I say a weird wisp of odd smelling smoke. Thinking it was just coolant burning off looked like right where valve cover was. Sort of like burned coolant with electrical burnt smell. Might be nothing but definitely not just coolant burning off on hot block.

    One other thing you didnt mention and that is a high pressure cooling system. Compression from the cylinders leaks past the head gasket into the water jackets in the head causing high cooling system pressure. Should have made the top 6.

    • @michaelbock2424
      @michaelbock2424 Год назад

      Actually top 3 should be headgasket lewking into 3 areas : oil passages(milky oil) combustion chamber(white smoke) and compression leaking past the gasket into the water jackets( high pressure cooling system)

    I’m not sure if I have a bad head gasket I have a jaguar X 38 Vandenplas 2000 I just put a new engine in it that’s got 60 K on it. The problem is is the antifreeze disappears into thin air if you’re driving it for a couple hours wasn’t going to ground just disappears and low coolant comes on the temperature doesn’t go over the medium range and it’s not too much smoke coming out the back, but I was told that it might be a leak inside the engine somewhere.

    I have a question so I saw you said the car will over heat at any scenario on my case my car only starts over heating when I step on the gas temps go to up to 250 but it will cool down fast if I let it park and sit for 5 minutes or less my coolant temps drop to 199 I don’t have white smoke coming off my exhaust tips from that bit of information do you think my head gaskets are bad ?

    Nice video you got!. I changed my vehicle (es 350 2009) Top gasket due to over heating.
    After the top gasket burn. I replaced it and changed the radiator to double face and chnage the water pump. I further replaced the AC compressor.
    Is there any other advice you have for me? For now the car is very stable and I'm always watching the temperature.

      Might be the hose clamps not tight enough or keep coming loose. I had that problem on my car but couldn’t find a leak until i looked properly and there were patches that looked like dried up water, so i tightened the clamps around the bottom hose and haven't had to refill my coolant in over a year

    I got one that is stomping me and many others. Maybe you can help??? 2012 Charger with the 3.6 overheated almost 2 years ago from a failed oil cooler. Surprise surprise. Replaced cooler, radiator, hoses, thermostat and housing (multiple times), water pump and head gaskets. Still getting oil in coolant, but no coolant in the oil. Runs perfect for a few weeks and then starts to overheat. I can flush it all out and replace the thermostat again and it starts all over. No idle issues. Performance is fine. Any ideas? Appreciate it!!!

    one symptom that was my case was exhaust to coolant leak where exhaust pushed coolant out of my res ...... caused bubbles in the overflow........ air in the coolant lines for an overheat condition. Similar leak to the coolant to combustion chamber as path but different direction ....... compression pushed it the other way. So no smoke in exhaust.

However when I did the oil change the oil was black but when I went to take of the oil cap and add engine oil I saw a thumb sized spot that was milky on the inside of the cap and also around where the cap sits.

    What would/could be the cause of an LT1 over heating when parking?
    The car starts overheating fast when I'm slowly manuvering (Few feet forward, few feet back etc) into a parking space
    Car is fine at all other times
    Water pump, thermostat, and coolant are all about 1 year old
    I bled the system
    Fuses and box LOOKED ok
    Just put on a new ac delco rad cap
    Unplugged the WP to test the fans and the drivers side works but NOT the passenger side
    Neither the AC or the heat hasn't worked for over a year btw

      Thermostat maybe? Try parking on a hill and bleed the system.nose down ass up.my fan doest come on till it reaches 228 degrees.i have a 95 so there's two gauges.the analog and a digital.the fan goes by the digital.also the area the radiator sits in collects along of leaves debris.try cleaning it out .
