Love your videos!! International watcher here, it ABSOLUTELY makes a difference to me when the actors are dubbed. I read fast, so I am often watching the actors and it never quite matches up and the audio is always slightly different, especially in dramas where some are using there natural voices and some are dubbed. If the drama is good I can over look it, if the drama isn't good it's just another reason for me to quit watching or avoid it.

Even if I read subtitles, I have to say I also prefer when it’s not dubbed and it’s using original voices… Even if I can’t understand everything they are saying, the tone of the voice and the emotions are still there to be appreciated. I’m happy there’s more not dubbed drama…

You are such a blessing to you international viewers. I had not considered watching this, but now that you've given us some insight I probably will. I love period pieces and I do look up the historical facts. I have watched so many versions of this emperor's reign that I didn't think there would be much to learn. I am glad this is just a snapshot of one of the most important events in Kangxi's reign. I don't have a good grasp of the Chinese language, I know enough that I recognize when the words that are being spoken are not an actual translation, which is a bit annoying. Thanks again for your review!!

I been following you so 3 years now. Thank you. I mainly agree with most of your opinions after watching the titles. Except for THE RATIONAL LIFE. I drrop that title after 5 eps as i cannot take all the toxic characters around the hero. Hahaha. anyways, keep up the great work !

I like this drama, and you are right. There are few stories like this and I believe the incredible effort to tame the Yellow River needs to be told. Not just the Yellow River but that the traditional flood plains of China don't flood again and bring misery to those generations of people living there. But Missy, can you explain that funny part about the poem that had the emperor laughing out loud? Something about the emperor's mom shifting grey ash or something (that Gao Zhiqi got whippped for). Thanks!

This poem, lieterally "the 西王母 (a goddess) is carrying Calcium carbonate" is basically just a non-sense poem which has no meaning but rhythms. Usually when you write poems you will make it rhythm (certain types of poems have stricter constraints on the rhythm and how to rhythm) and you then make it meaningful. But this poem, altought it rhythms, it does not make sense and thus further demonstrated that the author of this poem is not well educated (in the sense that he can only make it rhythm but the poem is just non-sense). So the emperor laughts at this poem, laughs at Suo E Tu for not being well educated in Han culture.

Thank you!! I'm waiting for the english sub for this drama. I usually really enjoy the scripts that mix the comedy and the drama, even in the same scene. It feels like real life, where we cross among funny persons and dramatique ones in a same situation. Reality is often a bit grotesque.

It's so sad! In order for movies to make money, you have to pay to watch it properly. If you watch it on a Chinese platform, it is usually subbed. When it 1st premiered on Mango Television, it was subbed. I was not disappointed. Your support of a paid platform supports these productions. Support the films, directors and cast. I subscribe to Iqiyi, Tencent, Youku, Mango, Gaga, Viki, Netflix, RUclips, and Prime. I am never disappointed or unhappy. I have all the best dramas at my fingertips.

I got intrigued when you mentioned the high-time for historicals in China. Could you be so kind as to specify and name those dramas from the past you 'd recommend as good examples of the genre! I've watched Startling with every step (on your tip, lol). The fantastical element was rather meh, but the relations between the brothers were just facsinating!

No, its still makes a huge difference even if I dont speak chinese, it is still obvious when they are dubbed. Trust me, I noticed when an actor in the thai BL "My Engineer" (Mek, I think the characters name was ?) was dubbed. And it is equally obvious in chinese dramas. Its just more pleasing to hear the actors OWN voice, and I dond mean any offence to voice actors ok ? Even of some "ways" are/sound nicer than others, I am a bit biased to either "round and warm" country dialects of speaking, or "sophisticated soft" ways of speaking. Atsushi of the band "Buck Tick", for instance, speaks some of the most beautiful and "earpleasing" japanese, for instance. And no, Im not saying that because hes famous and good looking. Whether he speaks or sings, it is VERY pleasing to the ear to listen to. The most appealing chinese voice Ive heard recently is the woman who did the trailer for "Bloody Romance" (the presenter voice over), I know she speaks in away to make it sound cold or creepy on purpose, but its still beautiful, and the singer for the song "Moment" also has a beatiful voice. Morgan Freeman and Denzel washington has very soothing voices, and so did Alan Rickman (RIP). There are even a lot of RUclipsrs that have REALLY pleasant voices. So, yeah, it makes a difference. The voice is also an important instrument to the actor, thats my opinion of course....

I agree. I do think there is one exception and that's the dub of Wang He Di in Love Between Fairy and Devil. It's shockingly good. Generally, so many Cdramas just have badly synchronised dubs with equally "uncanny valley" audio integration, sound engineering.

I just started the drama and wanted to give up around ep 10. I agree all the actors are quite good, the main storylines are serious and interesting. But some of the side stories are a bit tabloidish, majority of Kangxi's interactions with the Empress and Empress Dowager are so "what is that?" for me.

When you talk about The long river , it is like we are watching a diferent drama.I am sure it has all the qualities you enumerated but for international audiences I think this drama wont be appealing. I must confess I had a hard time getting past episode one, I quit.Although I like Luo Jin very much I believe this is one of the most boring dramas I ever saw. Unless you can relate to the theme : the flood control , this is of little interest to the non chinese audiences.

This is a veryyyy subjective take. I'd say you not liking the drama is really just about you and nothing to do with being non-Chinese. There are alot of non-Chinese viewers who thoroughly enjoyed it and give it very high ratings. I'm non-Chinese myself and I just finished watching the whole thing. It was amazing and the over 100 positive reviews on the app I watched it on from non-Chinese viewers definitely agree with me. It probably just wasn't your cup of tea.
