My Grandfather landed on Anzio as a member of The U.S. / Canada First Special Service Force (The Black Devil's aka The Devil's Brigade). His Commanding officer was Robert T. Frederick & he was attached to General Mark Clarke's 5th American Army. He was in the Battle for Monte La Difensa, The Mussolini Canal,The Advance to the Tyber & The Liberation of Rome.
My uncle was killed off the beaches of Anzio, Italy, 20 February 1944, during the second world war. He was in the RAF, and was on board the HMS LST 305. It was torpedoed by the German submarine U 230. Scores of British, American, German and Italian soldiers died on the beaches and waters of Anzio. Now safe in the arms of Jesus.
