In this follow-up lesson to her very popular video for beginning players, "Learning Bluegrass Dobro," Cindy moves into intermediate territory with the blues, minor key and western swing styles that have become her signature sound.Cindy builds your knowledge of the Dobro step-by-step, teaching alternate tunings, music theory and invaluable bar and fingerpicking techniques. Starting with the much-requested classic Panhandle Rag, Cindy details the wide variety of musical moves rolls, slants, harmonics, hammer-ons, pull-offs, damping and raking that bring style and color to the song's basic theme and variations. By re-tuning just one string, she puts you into the instant country/swing sound of an open G6 chord, a revelation for those who have only played in standard tuning.Minor keys can be a challenge for anyone playing with a bar, and Cindy devotes part of this lesson to an in-depth study of minor chord shapes and the licks that are based around them. This invaluable information will enable you to play just about any tune that requires improvisation in minor keys. She then goes into a very playable version of Django Reinhardt's great Minor Swing, which you'll soon be playing along with the band,Cindy uses a modified Stella round-hole tuned to an open E chord for the rockin' Rockabilly Blues. From its slow Robert Johnson-esque intro to its hard driving boogie-woogie bass line and flashy blues licks, this tune is a real show-stopper. You'll gain an understanding of how lap-style guitar can be used as a powerful blues instrument as well as its usual role in playing country, bluegrass and swing music.Faded Love, the classic fiddle piece of the Bob Wills era of traditional country swing, is a "must" for any player who likes this great style of music. Cindy teaches the basic melody and then demonstrates the ways that ascending and descending harmony lines can be used to accompany a fiddle, guitar or other lead instruments.Aside from spectacular playing and teaching, a major highlight of this video is the play-along session on each tune with the pro band that Cindy assembled. Each tune is slowed down and space is left for you to practice with the rhythm section. This clear and insightful lesson will build your musical knowledge, expand your range of ideas and teach you important music theory that will make you a better all-around player.Review:"The tunes are not ends in themselves but vehicles for Cashdollar - a clear and engaging teacher - to impart a greater matrix of techniques and tips. From the creation of open tunings and minor scales (with some useful music theory dropped in) to barring and picking strategies, these are lessons the serious resonator guitar player will want to revisit again and again. You'll glean something new with each viewing." - Bluegrass UnlimitedStudent Review:"Just wanted to thank Happy Traum, Homespun and Cindy Cashdollar for her Dobro Variations DVD. I just received it and it is great. Not only is she a great player, but she's a terrific teacher as well. Anyone who has "been around" a resonator for a while and is ready to advance from the beginner stage to intermediate would greatly benefit from the dvd. Her brief discussion on music theory along with insight on her own musical development is a welcome addition. Great song selection as well. Thanks again." - Juan

Thanks Cindy, You are still teaching, I bought a video of yours about 20 yrs ago, and followed your lessons then, since lost the video , now back at it, Thanks Bill
One of the most hauntingly beautiful melodies ever, definitely strings, fiddle, guitar
Great vid, Cindy. Faded is one of my favorite songs & it really sounds fantastic on the dobro--or maybe that's the musician!! Thanks.
@teachrz2
I agree. Cindy is an amazing musician and great teacher. FYI, Homepun's download site is expanding rapidly with most of our titles available for download. We are not currently doing a-la-carte songs, but entire videos are available.

Looking at this, I regret selling my dobro before I could even master the basics. I guess I was trying to figure it out on my own too much, and could have used some good instruction. Saw her this summer in Toronto with Albert Lee. What a treat.
Best looking good guitar teacher I've ever seen.
Good morning from Texas. That's an AWESOME sound!!!!!
Thank you from your upload, to show how this music play by this instrument, wonderful play.
my parents had The Buckaroo's album with this song on it.
I played it over a 1000 times.
Made me learn to play the guitar.
Totally beautiful. Truly loved that. Thankyou.
Just ordered "How to play western string steel' 1 & 2 - can't wait for them to arrive.
GREAT!
Very nice instruction. I play bass, not steele or dobro, but this teaching techniqe is excellent. The inset is especially good. The pinger/thumb pizzacatto and bar management was shown so that any learner could easily see what techniqe is practiced to get the song. Very good! And, as some have mentioned, the instructor is easy on the eyes.
Cindy is A1! Leon Redbone had Cindy play with him many years ago! Saw them at the Ark in Ann A rbor, MI (the original building) sat about 18" away when they played! Amazing!!
....."well it's a sweet dream that keeps me close to you, dear".......I am a happy man to see her on a regular base....she's fantastic!!
Pretty… and so is the song. 😎
Bought my first Dobro from Cindy.
She's fantastic.
Bravissimo well done
I play upright bass (I am 73 and been taking lessons a couple of yrs) and I would love to play with her in person. I mean play bass back-up!!!!
I just order her lessons for Lap steel ,I was hesitant at first because most women talk too fast to understand them ...but after watching her videos and listening to her , she’s very clear when she speaks , I don’t have to say “ did she say b or d or g ? “ . Don’t get me wrong I love a country gal with that “ Country Twang “ in her voice, but not when she’s telling me “ there’s a Grizzly in your kitchen! “ and I take it as “ the grills in the kitchen ! “ Or when she’s giving me lap steel lessons . Besides sees REALLY easy on the eyes , I hope I can pay attention , if not I can always hit the rewind lol 😆.
Great lesson 👌🏿
The first time I heard this song it was an instrumental playing on a jukebox in Roscoe Texas just up from Red by Sweet water. lol Red may not be there anymore.
Cindy Cashdollar is a great musician I would love to have her play on some of my music
Yes she is pretty. However, in case you (we) missed it, she is also a master of non-pedal steel guitar and not shabby on the Dobro. I'd love to support Homespun Video lessons like this one if they were (are?) available via pay-per--download.
i know it is kinda off topic but do anyone know a good place to watch new series online ?
@Madden Seth Flixportal xD
@Mitchell Lyle thank you, I signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) I really appreciate it !!
@Madden Seth no problem :)
@homespuntapes
Thanks, Adam. I have purchased Homespun tapes in the past and was well satisfied with the quality and content. Now, if you guys could just come up with a port to download these lessons directly to my brain I would be much obliged. However, I guess that would take all the fun out of learning! :)
Nice Playing !!!!!!!!!!!!!
it's a great video.....
Such a beautiful song.
Pretty sure it's a Beard instrument. Look at the headstock at :58 sec. The Regal emblem is very different. I also have a Regal and the tone is more mid heavy.
It's a Beard, indeed. Even before you get to the headstock, it is so his style.
Thanks for that usefull video
😍
I'm in love.
hand me a Dobro. Looks sooo easy..
What is the difference between a slide guitar and a dobro? Or is it the same?
+Chuck Benwitt a dobro is an acoustic guitar with a resonator, which is the round thing in the middle that gives it the more percusive sound.
+Chuck Benwitt Thank you so much, beautiful. I play some guitar and am working on learning how to handle my combination guitatbanjo
The strings on a dobro, lap, or pedal steel are about ½" off the fretboard. They never touch the fretboard, and only feel the steel. With a slide guitar (Robert Johnson, Ry Cooder, George Harrison), you can also fret the strings along with using the slide.
I learned from homespun when I was 12 so 23 years ago. There was no such thing as RUclips
she plays all string instruments and pedal steel . look around!!
What is the make of this guitar?
A 4 chord song, but great vid.
Ok Cindy I can't remember the name of that sond you start out this video with. I remember it from my youth buy not the name . Anyone know?
