  • Pat Parelli, Lauren Barwick and River in a surprise session at the 2006 Savvy Conference in Colorado.
26-year-old Lauren started riding at the age of seven. She attended Pony club for many years, competing in three-day eventing, and then progressing to show jumping. In her professional career, Lauren trained to become a stunt person specializing in horsemanship. An accident in June of 2000 left her a paraplegic and unable to continue to compete or pursue her chosen profession. An intense rehabilitation program provided the opportunity to ride and compete in Para-equestrian competitions where she has represented Canada at numerous events including the 2003 World Championships in Belgium. At the 2006 Savvy Conference Pat invited Lauren to play with his Andalusian/TB mare, River, at Liberty and then mount up for a coaching session featuring extended trots, flying leads and more!

Only Pat can train a rider and a horse to do such beautiful movements and without legs. WOW! So beautifully awesome and perfectly done. Thank you for sharing this most wondrous exciting unification of a horse and a human as ONE! God bless.

Hi, Does Pat still have River? Is this the same horse that Karen Rohlf rode bareback at the Savvy Conference in 2003? (I was there, and it was such a beautiful demonstration, there was not a dry eye in the place). What breed of horse is River, and where did she come from? Thanking you in advance for any info. that you might provide.

I must say that is brilliant teaching - and that's a brilliant horse - I'm not really convinced about the riding - the girl is amazing though - but the horse is even more. The horse is responding to Pat not to the rider.

      Hi Miam,
The horse is very much responding to the rider with Pat's help of course. As amazing as Pat is, we don't think even he could get a horse to do an extended trot, flying changes or half passes from simply talking from the center of the arena!

I know what you mean - obviously the horse does "in a way" respond also to the rider - but Pat isn't just simply talking - it is his way of communicating with the horse which I really adore - and again the girl is amazing too.
