Hilltop Hoods are a great group and have a wide range of emotional songs, up and down. They also love to do collaborative work and it's some of their best.
This is a really heavy subject matter, but so impactful! Hilltop have so many light-hearted and fun songs as well, but a good mix of serious and insightful tracks too. Some suggestions: 'I Love It' feat. Sia; 'Exit Sign' feat. Illy; '1955' - these are all a bit more radio friendly. 'Rattling the Keys to the Kingdom' is another great track. 'Stopping All Stations' another with more serious subject matter. They have a long catalogue of cracking tracks beyond this, these are just some of my faves! Great reaction guys!
A lot of references you will probably not get because they are Australian Children overboard for example was a issue leading up to an election where the conservative govt was on the nose and made an issue of refugees throwing their children in the water out at sea They released photo's of Australian navy personel rescuing kids in the ocean All the photo's later came out showing the boat sinking and everyone was in the water but they cropped that out to say parents threw them in The Blue Sky Mine reference is to Asbestos mining and the midnight oils song Blue Sky Mine There are many more
"Abbott and Costello" is a double for the comedian duo but also our Tony Abbott and Peter Costello our Prime Minister and deputy (like vice president) who at the time used conservative tactics of fear/"immigrant invasion" that would be comedic if they werent actually talking about real asylum seekers who drown everyday trying to get here bc we legally take less and less each year.
This song was a response to Tinkerbells Fairydust song written 50 years earlier called '2010'. It was a song about what the world will be like in 50 years. It has the same melody as the original
Yes this one 🙌 twenty ten by Tinkerbells Fairydust it was released in 1968 that was a hopeful song. They were looking to and wondering what the future would hold. So Hilltop Hoods responded with a dark song. they used same melody from Twenty Ten. HH song gives me chills.
Also I know it seems depressing, but traditionally us Aussies are quite apathetic about politics. It's often taken songs from high profile music groups (with a majority white/or conservative audience) to highlight inequities that said audience might not normally think or care about. Midnight oil (blue sky mining), John Farnham (youre the voice originally in 80s used vietnam war imagery and is about war and peace in general...but was recently cleared to be used in a TV campaign Australia wide to target fence sitting referendum voters and show why "yes" for an equal voice in parliament for our Indigenous people is something that benefits ALL of us. Equality. Hilltop hoods are using that same type of platform to show patterns in world (and Aus) history that newer generations might not know... times where politicians capitalised on "the war on terror" to label any immigrant "bad" and illegal if they were seeking asylum, or already here. Australia has a long history of racism sactioned until fairly recently in the 70s (when the "White Australia policy"ended) and a strong undercurrent remains regarding Aboriginal people unfortunately. Hilltop hoods are white, so they are using this song as a platform to speak to how all these issues are connected... and worth us caring about. Whenever you see another group labelled/treated as "other", you cease to see them as human any more. Their message is (including most other uobest songs), we need to get back to what brings us together and see any attempt to divide has always been for political gain and is a manipulation of the truth - that the "others" are humans too.
