    I don't have a problem with technology. The equipment is advancing to the level of detail that I did not think will reach. But I still keep the fundamental. The skills you have will show more with this new technology

      I started DJing in 2002 and I always felt like I was part of the last generation to learn how to dj with real vinyl. The CDJs were the devil at that time for some DJs at that time but I guess since I was new to DJing I had to learn how to use both. As time and technology moved on, I've been able to adapt because I've been using each new thing as it came along. I still prefer the feel of turntables and vinyl over controller platters that dont spin but I can use whatever and still rock a crowd. It is what it is. But Jico got that work for replacement Shure needles if you really need it.

    As long as the DJ can keep the dancers on the dance floor, then it shouldn't matter what is used. That is what makes a DJ. I myself use vinyl and I haven't used anything else but M44-7's on my 1200s, because of the durability and the sound quality, that only I as a musician can break apart, and interpret when to catch a beat or a certain instrument in the music. Most people that are on the dance floor don't pay attention to those details; therefore, it really doesn't matter. I learned how to listen for beat changes without a monitor behind me; so, I'm sure that I can learn to use a needle that doesn't stand up to the M44-7. Thanks for the heads up and your enlightening video.

    It sounds like Rob Swift was speaking more in the sense of keeping the option of classic Dj equipment and technology. You also (Dj TLM) answered your own question to Rob Swift because you stated that "less vinyl has been produced over time" and newer artists no longer press vinyl so progressing with the music as a Dj means adapting the newer music and allowing a mesh of genres and age to make a strong stance. Either way you are on of the best DJ’s and your channel has helped me through time and Rob Swift is still one of the Legends in Dj but and you both have solid points and I look forward to seeing more. Great video

    I really enjoy this video. As you are a Hip Hop DJ who respect the pioneers of your genre, I show the same respect as a House DJ. I once wrote a post directly to the Legendary Frankie Knuckles. I was upset with him because he was playing new versions of House instead of these old classics I grew up loving. He replied to my rant. I can't remember all he said, but for the most part, he explains about evolving and refuse to be stuck in the past. That change my mindset of House music forever. Now, I enjoyed listening to new Producers banging out tracks. I also love when a put a spin on the classics. It is like they are reborn. I always welcome new tech. I remember when home computers came to the market, and the laptop took over. I remember when cell phones were cool because they were portable. It took over landline phones completely. Now most smartphones are like pocket computers. I remember when CDJs came out and turntabled the purest frown on those who learned from them alone. Now some frown on those who only learn with controllers. There will always resist at first until they have no choice but to step up or get step on!

    We got to stay open-minded in these situations! I'm no big DJ or anything but I don't like when new products and new ideas get knocked immediately just because they are different from what we know. How would hip hop culture as a whole grow if we all just knock the changes when they come. The end of the shure line is a sad day, but I feel its just making room for the new. Hip Hop wasn't born through negativity, it was born and fueled by a want and need for positive change. I'ma celebrate the departing of a product that helped shaped part of a beautiful culture.

    Here's some interesting facts about the M44-7.. Shure released it in the '60s as a hi-fi cartridge.. In the '70s, it became a popular broadcast cartridge because of its durability.. Then later, the DJ market adopted them.. I have Shure professional catalogs from the '70's that list the M44-7 as the "new broadcast standard." And some of my old broadcast turntable catalogs list the M44-7 as a suitable broadcast cartridge..

  • @djciscov1

    👍🏻 Great Video, You always bring interesting topics. I don’t worry about Sure not making anymore M44s because another company will come along and basically make a copy that will look and function just like the Sure M44. A good example is like when Technics discontinued the 1200s, after a while Pioneer came out with the PLX-1000. It is very similar to the looks, feel, and function of the Technics 1200s.
    So, I hope people don’t go crazy paying stupid high prices for M44s. Give it a little time.

    Thanks for sharing the knowledge DJ TLM having worked in the electronics industry for 25 years Shure announcement does not shock me. lately, companies have been restructuring and changing there focus on what they sell and how they sell it. As a DJ you have two choices embrace the changes or work with what you have and enjoy it. There are other products out there it's not the end of the world but the beginning of inovation.

    WTF? Technology isn't cancer. Rob Swift is a legend but he's just mad because Shure made a financial decision as it pertains to their business. "Buy different needles, bruh."
    Rob Swift's perspective is from that of the turntable. He thinks that you aren't a "real" DJ unless you use a Technic 1200 turntable. Times change. They always do. Remember when they thought CDs would ruin DJing? Didn't happen. He's overreacting & hating on people who choose to use different equipment.
    "More options are better. Some people prefer controllers, some CDJs, some turntables. Get over it, do you & quit worrying about what other people are doing. Geezus!!!"
    You are always on point & very thoughtful, TLM. Appreciate you, bruh!

    What you are saying is so true!!! With Serato taking over and controllers and cdj's being used so much, cartridges and needles are not Sure's bread and butter! even though us djs in the industry love to use the Sure M447 with Serato vinyl there cost might not be worth continuing!!!!

    Jico's is the replacememt needle company name that makes the 44-7 replacement and it is cheaper ..so maybe that is also the reason that shure is stopping the production of them

    Shure is giving the same arguments than Technics gave years ago... The rest is history: Technics stoped making SL1200 MK2, then they said that they were very interested in vinyl again (best sound, bla, bla, bla...) and started making turntables again but... now the cheapest costs 1500 euros when a SL1200 used to cost 500. So quality, sound, respect for the customers are just words. What they all want is making (much) more money and that's all. (BTW I used to be a DJ, now I just DJ for my own, I've always been and still am a vinyl anthousiast).
    Thank you TLM for your videos.

    I'm not a DJ so for me the sound is everything. Which cartridge sounds best after long term listening without harshness and fatigue while preserving detail and subtlety. There's lots to choose and some of the best (for the money) I've head are no longer made sadly. One of them was an old Shure M55 upgraded with a hyper elliptical stylus. It music to my ears but probably couldn't stand the rigours of DJ use.

  • @iamdjphox8790

    You said it best...the equipments doesn’t matter...so there is NO LINE to draw. The new Rane 12s and Phase is the same concept as CDJs and the NS7 controller which has been out for years. DJs have been using those. It’s not really that ground breaking if you look at it like that.
    Next they will make a mixer with Phase software internally integrated (like Serato is now) and then what?
    Then 10years down the road, a company will take it to the next level and create a mixer with the hard drive inside and a touchscreen and it will take the place of a laptop

    I also was shocked when I got the news of shure stopping production of the m447’s and others in that line,but then it hit me I have been seeing a fluctuation of production for a wile with there product and it was a matter of time . For the argument of technology being the blame I can’t say true to that because as a person and artist you always would be pushing you craft and technology allows for that advancement, turntables are the foundation that has paved the way for us to advance to were we are now in the industry and my take it if shure want to stop production they should sell the patents for the needles and let another manufacture take up the production.

    This is unbelievable, I guess I would have to go back to putting coins back on the cartridge headshells on any other needles that I will use in the future. It was nice supporting Shure for many years!

    • @djTLMtv
      @djTLMtv  6 лет назад

      You don’t need coins if you use Ortofon needles

    • @crazycuts6891
      @crazycuts6891 6 лет назад

      I've used both the Concords that skipped, and the Ortolans that I connected the headshells which also skipped unless, I put a coin on the headshell. And I even had to use scotch tape to hold the coins in place as well. I've use almost every needle under the sun since 1980. From Realistic needles, which are now renamed (Shure), Audio Technica, Pickering, Stantons 500 AL, and Stanton 680 EL, and the Shure again. And I even tried the Q Bert signature Ortofons as well. As for the needles jumping, sliding and skipping, I personally like the challenges that needles brought because, they both test and bring out the DJs authentic skills. So if you know of any Ortofons that won't jump too much, please let me know. And as far as the "real" DJ thing, my take is that, DJing like everything else in this world is about expanding and branching out, not necessary progressing, or moving forward. So at the end of the day, DJing is a form of self-expression, no matter what piece of equipment that is being used, to each one's own. So here's a question, what will happen when automation takes over? Will people say that robots are fake DJs?

    • @crazycuts6891
      @crazycuts6891 6 лет назад

      I would also like to add that, if one is using controllers, then that would be the reason that they're not DJs, because they would fall in the producer category.

    I hope and I ask ,,, why can’t an aftermarket company make the stylus insert for the actual m44-7?? So that if we have the real m44-7 cartridge we can just pop in a aftermarket stylus.
    Someone in our DJ world please put up the money to produce a replacement stylus for the m44-7. In 29 years of Dj’in all types to music. Specializing in turntablism the m44-7 is the most valuable tool I’ve ever used on jobs. I like ortofons too (especially the intergraded nightclub version for blending House, techno, trance, Freestyle,etc.
    But as far as hip hop and turntablism goes. (Which is my favorite) 90s hip hop on my actual vinyl (with the old “pops” coming from my old worn down vinyl) the M44-7 is the absolute cleanest needle that I ever used. And I came from Stanton when m44-7 cane around. I love them they hold a groove in a record like a AWD Mercedes-Benz AMG car holds the road. I’m sorry for my ramble guys but I’m worried because I refuse to buy a controller or Rane 12. The day I hang up my tech 12s is the day I hang up me DJ career. Serato with vinyl is the most technology that I’m looking for as far as assisting me Dj’in. Why not put all this new technology into making cleaner amps, speakers , and mixers. (Ok I take back mixers. I love my 62 mixer) lol.
    Keep up the great videos.

      24-bit AIFF files are way better than MP3. However, you need a 24-bit output mixer like the DJM-900 NXS2 or a completely analog mixer to make the most of the AIFF file. I'd recommend upgrading the interconnectors/RCA wires from the mixer to the CDJ-2000 NXS2 also.

And whats so BS about it is they use serato just like me, but because their bigass fancy MIDI controller doesn't light up and needs parts to be replaced over time it automatocally makes me the inferior one. And yeah, i said it. If you use a DVS with any deck, IT BECOMES A BIGASS FANCY MIDI CONTROLLER. just cause yours has an almost obsolete disc on top doesn't mean you get to treat me like garbage because mine doesn't. #NoMoreControllerHate

    New technologie make life easier and push the bondaries. If it's easier do to something, real DJ/artist will go further to stand out and they will find new limitation, and tech companie will creater more innovative product to push those bondaries further again.
    And that's how music evolve, from the introduction of electricity to the digital era. If old timer don't think it's a part of the culture they use to know, then it became something else. For now hip hop has always been an open mind culture, looking forward on technologie and innovation, and that's why trap, turntablism or anything that doesn't sound like 80s hip hop is still part of this culture.
    Tech is not meant to destroy what has been done, it's here to push it further, and from what I see, there is more and more turntablist (and we can add "controlerist" if that's a thing), and more and more innovative things. At some point it become hard to innovate because the base is already there, and that's how technologie help.
    Rob Swift was an innovator at his time, but he choose to put himself behind some imaginative bondaries, probably because of some nostalgy or because he didn't compete anymore so he doesn't feel the need to stay up to date. He still a legend for me and lot of DJ (and beyond that), but he's kind of the DJ Sneak of hip hop now, and doesn't seems to see the big picture and believe in youth anymore :/
    As long as Shure doesn't stop the production of SM58, we don't have to pannic :)

    It's killing me to know....you say you live in the Netherlands, but you have an "east coast" accent and you look like you're Latino...can someone let me know?
    Also, yes I was too disappointed when I heard the news about Shure needles demise. I always loved the way ortofons looked, but they we're too expensive for my budget. Back in the early 2000's I started with "m-audio TORQ" as my DVS, I liked the fact that I didn't have to carry loads of crates to parties. Then I upgraded to serato SL3, but I somehow keep coming back to vinyl.

    It’s just the natural progression. As tech advances, the old tech loses its usefulness. You’ll see that ANYWHERE. No one uses VCRs anymore. No one uses 8 track players. No one uses those big ass home recorder cameras where you had to pop in a VCR to record. Tech advances anywhere tech exists, and leaves the old tech in the dust. It’s inevitable, so I think Rob is wrong to blame the djs for the death of shure. I hope phase doesn’t bring about the end of all needles because I like them but I’ll be the first to admit they can be annoying at times. I did purchase my phase “cartiridges” as I see the advantage they can bring (no skipping, no replacing, no need to clean)

    I had to stop at about the 20 minute mark. I'm a little disappointed with Rob Swift's opinion. As one of the legendary DJs I admire, it was disheartening to hear him take a dig at tech. The reality, for me, is new tech has always advanced the culture by allowing for more creativity. To me, the job of a DJ is to share the way you hear and feel tracks and one track can lead you to another track, that is about it at its core. Now, as the skill level grows, creativity and individual expression come into play. As a DJ, one of my ultimate highs come from when I can play what I want to play, how I want to play it and the crowd is feeling it like I feel it. Tech just allows me to add a creative element that I would not have been able to prior to it's introduction.

    technology isnt the blame i feel the art of turntables-em and the lack of djs who feel into being leaders are slacking ... producers are now the djs and turntablies that were great haven't passed on what they know kinda forcing the new generation to follow what they see in festivals n clubs.
    js the new generation isnt going to looking up the great djs unless we educate them and tell them are struggles.
    i feel like the whole turntables culture has been put on the back burner for producers to take over and only small groups in different citys like the thr3estyles and you tlm and also a few other sources like rob swift are keeping it alive.
    question why dont we see more turntables-em at festivals and at clubs? ... most of the time i dont see any turntables i just see cdjs on the tables with them set on cdj mode not even on vinyl mode or controllers ... you can name the handful of festival and club djs who use turntables there the ones keeping the art form alive.

      I agree. A lot of the “older” DJs had (and have) a really negative attitude towards new DJs and in stead of sharing their knowledge they point fingers and try to lecture them. That never works

    Respect to the pioneer DJs out there! However, technology & DJing go hand & hand! There was DJing before the Technics Sl-1200 mk2. Vinyl was just the medium of the time. We live in a capitalist world..... Money will ALWAYS be an issue!

    Losing shure will hurt the dj ..but losing needles period will hurt the dj ..I love and enjoy all the new tech but I also dislike the fact that dj's nowadays are losing the real fundamentals of dj'ing ..they are losing those long nights and years of practice it took to gain the hand control and the coordination that came with it..so losing shure ..it will be missed by a true dj but losing needles in general will hurt the game ..in my opinion...now dont get me wrong I love the new advances in dj'ing like serato but I draw the line pretty much there because even with the serato you still can use the needle ..I'm really not into the whole controller thing with the jog wheels those are not for me ..so ill keep my 44-7 and ill buy the replacement needles from a off brand because the replacement needle is still out there and will continue to be im sure ..I can't remember the off brand name right now I believe its jinco or something along the lines of that name that makes a replacement needle for cheap but it is still a good needle djcity did a review on them ans mojax's said they are good needles ..so there you have it..keep your cartridge and buy the off brand and your m 44-7 will continue to live and thrive in the dj game ...

      Yeah, but that’s the thing; needles aren’t going anywhere yet. People act like the 44-7 was “the only” needle ;)
      I can understand peeps don’t want to stop using their favorite needle, but (like you said) with the third party replacement you can still use the 44-7 👍🏽👍🏽

    where there's a positive there's a negative and vice a versa for old school DJs like myself it's about Talent I believe for me at least the cancer is when technology allows people that are not talented to become DJs they see these producers at these festivals playing their music which is pre-recorded and they're not DJing live people see that and want to become that and Technology allows them to do that.. so what happens the technology is what's really doing the DJing that's why in 2018 you have people that can't beat match by ear they have to have the Serato screen and at that you see them where they're not even using their headphones they're relying on the technology and if your relying on technology more than your own ability that sucks... okay like you TLM you have the talent to beat match by ear you know how to scratch you know how to DJ and Technology does help people that have talent to DJ to really ripshit up.. it's like the song said what is a DJ if he can't scratch what is an MC if he can't rap.. but now the cancer is a situation to where oh I don't scratch I'm not that kind of a DJ and that's the unfortunate part of it all.. a DJ should be able to scratch... a DJ should be able to beat match by ear... a DJ should be able to DJ on his own ability so in conclusion the cancer is that technology has lowered the standards of what it is to call yourself a DJ......

    if you are a virtuoso/turntablist or you want to be one then you need the right instruments and not a approximation. i dont care if mobile dj use digital or techo djs use digital. they can use what ever they want. but as a turntablist you need the real deal. if you look at the hardcore scratchers they all use real vinyl no timecode. and i mean not the baby scratchers or the orbit guys.I mean the scratches for which you need a great hand control. why qbert prefers real vinyle for all those years? and here one analogy: a pianist(not a keyboard player), that is playing classical music, will always prefers a steinway piano over a midi keyboard. peac out and much respect to the last mohican

    • @djTLMtv
      @djTLMtv  6 лет назад +1

      I don’t know. I understand the piano analogy, but I know a lot of hardcore turntablists/total scratch nerds who use real vinyl AND timecode

    • @klauskillski3881
      @klauskillski3881 6 лет назад

      why are drummers prefer real drums instead of digital drum kit?
      because sense of touch and sense of hearing are the least sluggish.
      yes timecode is used but they prefer to practices/learn scratches on real vinyl and you need for timecode a needles anyway. analog in this context is be better.
