My dad was school bus mechanic, that taught me to clean every piece & areas being worked on! Cleaning everything drove my friend Harry nuts that never had time by the hour wages! This is what my dad would do: take rear side cover off, clean side cover, clean an check rear brake fluid level, small grease on side cover mounting pin rubbers gromits, he'd continue to check reverse cable, lube cables, then he'd clean front cover an grease rubber mounts, inspect front pins on front cover because they need pushed backwards to remove, an often pulled incorrectly pulled forward an broker! After taking care of whole uncovered area, then he would start on oil change procedures! Same for under front oil filter cover, he would have cleaned cover while it was still in his hand from removal, then clean horn an inspect horn wires, clean all under cover area, then remove filter! You must choose your own path, grasshopper! But my bikes looks different an cleaner after service work! Second dad's rule: never set parts or tools on vehicle project unless laid on service mat or towel! 3rd dad's rule: treat everything with thoroughness, like our own kids are going to be in it all day, everyday!

If you want to get all the old oil out, while you have the drain plug out, just run some clean oil through it and it will flush your pan. I have done this on bikes and all my cars. You can use a good dino oil if you think you are wasting syn oil. You will be surprised at the crap that comes out and run some until its clean, usually a few ounces. BTW, I am a retired HD Police bike mechanic-just thought I would pass that on.

Clifford, I noticed your LED lights on the bottom, right outside the exhaust. I just ran a s#*tload of lights on my GL1500 and was worried about the heat from the exhaust affecting the adhesive. I haven't ran any there yet, but now that I see yours, I want to. Any adverse issues or are they all good down there? By the way, your videos have been a big help to me lately. Good video. You didn't mention why you're using the high mileage variant of Mobil 1, which is important. For those who may not know, the high mileage oil, in addition to diesel oils, do not have the friction modifiers which are bad for wet clutches. The way to know for sure is if the API service donut label does not say "Resource Conserving" then it's safe in motorcycles.

    • @CliffordRice

You will be turning the oil filter as you put it on, so you only need a little oil inside and it will rotate around.

  • @stevetaylor8698
    @stevetaylor8698 6 лет назад +3

A couple of things. You should really wear gloves as used engine oil is quite nasty stuff, also, if the oil is hot when you undue to drain bolt, it won't burn your hands if you get some on you when undoing the drain. The oil will drain a bit quicker if you undo the oil filler cap before you start to drain the oil. Finally, I know you probably did, but it is important that you clean the mating surface where the oil filter fits.
Thanks for this, enjoyed watching it.

Hi Clifford, I'm Mexican and I watch your videos a lot, this year I hope to buy a goldwing 1500, when are you going to upload more videos?

I hope to do so soon, 2019 was not a good year for me...working out of state, and then a tree fell on the garage....so I'm trying to piece everything back together. Hopefully with a bigger and better shop.

@@CliffordRice I am a first time goldwing owner sir, I found a 97 model higher miles but runs great. The only problem is after about 10-15 minutes riding it will no longer pull for about an hour or less,,,, any thoughts?..... needs new clutch and pressure plate maybe, or even could have car oil in it causing the slip. I am no motorcycle mechanic and she my first goldwing not sure how to approach it I'd love any advice please sir. Ride safe.

You need to use JASO-rated motorcycle oils as they do not contain any friction modifiers that will encourage the clutch to slip. This is critical for proper clutch operation. MA/MA2 rated oil must pass a clutch friction test. These newer (as of 30 years ago) car oils are basically too slick for wet clutches.

I just bought a lovely 1997 Wing, and they advised me to NOT use synthetic oil, but rather semi-synth.

I have been using Shell Rotella 5-40 synthetic for over 20 years in my Wing and it has never had a problem with synthetic. In fact most member of GWRR use Rotella in their wings.

@@jimeckenrode1271 AYEEEE nice!! You mean the T6 Diesel Oil?
I used the Rotella T6 synthetic on all my other bikes including the Ninja ZX10R and it ran great..
Now that I picked up a Goldwing, I’m considering putting the Rotella in there as well.. thoughts?

Its ok the oil you re suggesting not for bikes? And how many miles suggest to change oil? Appreciate your comments., i got Goldwing 1988 /1500cc

He's using car oil. He may have good luck with it but I would recommend motorcycle oil rated MA or MB or MA/MB. Anything else might have additives that will make the clutch slip.
The maintenance schedule for the GL1500 calls for an oil and filter change every 8,000 miles.

Excellent series of videos on the Goldwing as i just got my first one, however i noticed that you are using automotive oil , which i've been told forever that they don't contain the friction additives for the clutch like all motorcycle specified oils , so it might make it slip. Any issues with that? Txs Jeff
