    Child!!!
    The one thing that stood out to me in the movie was how trash the principal was. Extremely trash! Even the lady in the office who gave Louanne the job was trash! This was definitely high school in the 90s vibes (even though I was a small child in the 90s). Yes, the kids were bad but they just needed to be challenged….a lot. I’m glad she changed her mind about leaving the school because she made such a lasting impression on them despite the loss of Emilio and the other students. The black grandmother’s statement to Louanne was the most depressing scene I’ve seen in a while. Sooo discouraging. The crabs in a barrel mentality is real. And I agree with how you would’ve beat down the principal about Emilio! Would be on the news and lost my job! Everyone would’ve caught a stray. I enjoyed your review as always!

    At LouAnne’s website is a brief Q&A where you can find out what happened to the real kids whose lives were portrayed in the movie. In one of her answers to a visitor’s question she wrote:
    Durell and Lionel came back to school after their grandma made them quit and work for a semester (and she never called me a honky anything - she was very nice).

  • @ridedamaverick
    @ridedamaverick 18 дней назад +32

    You should read up on Louanne's thoughts about this movie and the television show. She has decried this film loudly - so much that when ABC would send her checks for TV residuals, she would send them back uncashed. She said the two most misleading points were that the kids were about a third white, and that they never called her names like White Bread. She also said the kids listened and dissected rap lyrics, not Bob Dylan.

    • @Not_Always
      @Not_Always 17 дней назад +8

      This is not true at all. She definitely took whatever money she was paid for the television show and the movie, which actually wasn't a lot.
      LouAnne on her earnings from the movie:
      “Yeah, unfortunately, I signed for two per cent of the net profits. There were no net profits, so I got a royalty statement for zero. My agent was an old lady at the time. She’s been dead for some time, but she hired an agent in LA that she heard a lot about. It was a long contract and I was teaching and had 250 adverse kids to worry about as a program director at the time. They sent a 60-70 page contract and the agent said here you go, sign this you’re going to make millions of dollars. I thought great because I had started a nonprofit corporation because wanted to start my own school out in the mountains called Second Chance Ranch where kids ride horses and take care of animals. So I signed the contract, then the movie was done, then Jerry called and said we’re # whatever at the box office, we made a bunch of money. They made about $186 million. I figured it out and thought they owed me $750,000. No, they sent me a statement for zero. I called my agent and asked, ‘Hey, what’s the deal with the zero statement?’ She said, ‘Oh, you signed for two per cent of the net profits. There’s never any net profits.’
      I said,’ But you told me to sign the contact.’ he said, ‘You should have known better.’
      I said, ‘Oh, I should have? Okay …’
      “I used part of that money to get 40 acres out in the desert, started a non-profit (called Second Chance Ranch). It would have been enough to get a school started. I sent out letters for donations. Hollywood Pictures sent me a cheque for $250. Pfeiffer sent me a personal cheque for $10,000 USD. I think that speaks for itself. But then I got little dribbles and drabbles and it wasn’t going to be enough, then the zero royalty statement, plus I had to earn a living. So I sold the property then I gave the money to a Hispanic alternative school. I learned an important lesson.”

    As someone who is going into her first year of teaching and has done student teaching, people who have no idea how to help you as a teacher will constantly tell you to “just be engaging” and “build relationships.” Never go to those people because they will just gaslight you into thinking you’re the problem when they know damn well it’s the students and the system.

      I’m not a teacher YET (however, I am going to college this fall and my major is in English education) but from what I’ve seen in the classrooms from doing an internship in high school for a teacher program that I was in when I was a senior and just being a student in general, I concur. It’s not always the teacher’s fault when the students aren’t engaged. Unfortunately, some kids just don’t give a fuck. Some students rather be on their phones, sleeping, or act defiant than to actually pick a book up or learn in general. I think teachers are doing the best they can and sometimes administration can be completely useless at times and the school system as a whole is corrupt. Best wishes to you on your teacher journey 💞

      The worst advice I've ever received! It's usually from someone who has never taught or hasn't been in a classroom in 20 years. If a kid doesn't want to learn or be disruptive, no amount of engagement and relationship building is going to help. I've had students who loved and called me their favorite and would still do nothing.

    I know it's just a movie but Here's my biggest gripe:
    I truly believe that the grandmother came from a time period where she's gotten used to being disrespected by the American System (Jim Crow Law/Civil Rights Movement) that she wants her grandchildren to get into the workforce without having to rely on education, but because of how she operates with that mindset, there's no tangible way to establish good mentorship and discipline unless the cops have to make attitude adjustments. Literacy is still quintessential to find good jobs. Overall, she's completely out of order, it's one thing to have your grandchildren opt out of school without giving them a second thought of an opinion, but to blatantly call out the teacher for giving them a chance to have a better future goes to show that she's just as much of a problem as the School's Principle and her Co-worker. 😠

    i think i might finally be ready to give this movie a chance. i was a huge Michelle Pfeiffer fan in the 90s, but Coolio turned me completely off from seeing this movie.
    It's been about 30 years, and i STILL loathe "Gangsta's Paradise"!
    i hate the song and i HATE the video. 😆
    i can't even believe that song was such a massive hit.

    That grandmother was a piece of work, but now that I'm older I see it from another lense. Not saying it was right for her to say & do what she did, but you have to understand that was probably a generational thing. Her parents probably told her she wouldn't amount to anything & made her leave school to work b/c their parents (her grandparents) were probably slaves and had the same mentally. So that way of thinking is just passed down unfortunately.

    I love your review as always! Gangster's Paradise was my favorite- I know it's obvious but I really loved it (RIP Coolio). These white savior movies are entertaining but a bit frustrating because a lot of them aren't based on real people (I know Dangerous Minds is though). I really noticed how unrealistic it could be when I was in sixth grade and my original older white teacher went into early retirement because she couldn't handle us, and the white band teacher also went into early retirement. They brought in a white lady teacher to take over my sixth grade class and even though she said she had been teaching for 30 years, she only lasted 3 days and she cried each day. Even my little sister said her white kindergarten teacher cried so much and didn't return the next year. Both my sixth grade teacher and my band teacher eventually got replaced by Black teachers and they did a good job, especially my band teacher. The whole experience made me question a lot of these white savior movies because if they couldn't handle middle schoolers and kindergartners, how could they handle high schoolers? It's usually the Black and Latino teachers who stay and they rarely get credit in movies. That's why movies like Stand and Deliver, Take the Lead, and Lean on Me have a special place in my heart. They are much more realistic to me.
    Also, could you do a review on Take The Lead? It's not really talked about much but I really like it and it was based on a real Latino dance teacher who taught the inner city students how to dance and gave them a new outlook on life (Antonio Banderas plays the teacher).

    Honestly, this movie aged very poorly to me. Though I was a young adult when it came out, I could see the pattern of what people now call today "white saviorism." I do think it's also a critique of how uncaring the public school system can seem, especially in light of the systemic under-resourcing they face in more disadvantaged communities.

    • @user-be7tc2bd6e
      @user-be7tc2bd6e 18 дней назад +7

      8695,yes the public school system is uncaring especially in minority communities,this is where the parents come into play.Have you seen the movie with Will Smith playing the William's sisters father ??? GOOD movie.Their father was very active in their lives,school,teaching them how to play tennis,etc,etc,..if their father and mother weren't active in their kids lives,there wouldn't be a Venus and Serena tennis pros nor would they be very rich. Instead their neighbors would say you mean Venus and Serena who work at the mill factory down-town.
